Pockets!!

My DS has been bought lots of clothes, we didn't find out the sex and also didn't have a baby shower so a lot of the clothes are gifts after he arrived and are incredibly gendered, although are lovely to have.

My gripe is that he has pockets in everything that isn't a sleep suit. Tiny dungarees with pockets, trousers with pockets and even t-shirts with a tiny breast pocket. These are obviously very useful for all the teeny tiny accoutrements a baby is required to carry Hmm

But what about meeee?! I spend a very small proportion of my life looking for practical clothes and I still have trousers and jackets with FAKE POCKETS or just completely missing or just as tiny as DS's pockets!! Gives me the rage Angry

Baby clothes seem to be the only time that even females get pockets. I once counted 5 pockets on dd's outfit. Meanwhile mine had none!

slightlyglittermaned · 11/09/2017 06:24

I didn't realise until very recently that the lack of pockets in women's clothes is a historical thing to prevent wicked women from carrying weapons in public: www.racked.com/2016/9/19/12865560/politics-of-pockets-suffragettes-women

I found it particularly galling to see how capacious the pockets are on baby boy's jeans Angry - before they can even use their hands!

theancientmarinader · 11/09/2017 06:27

Dd1 and all of her friends bought ball gowns with pockets in for their graduation. The tide is turning. I don't THINK any of them were concealing weapons... Most of them had their phones in there (and their hands, obv)

Gorgosparta · 11/09/2017 06:28

I bloody hate the lack of pockets in womens clothes. It drives me insane.

I was contemplating buying a dress for work at Hobbs outlet and then a woman who worked there said she loved had it and loved in because of the pockets. They were proper pockets. You could actually fit stuff in the pocket. I bought it straight away.

My dad was with me and he couldn't understand why womens clothes would not have pockets.

Its bonkers.

LilithTheKitty · 11/09/2017 06:42

Yes! And if our clothes do have pockets they are too small to hold anything Angry. I bought skinny jeans from Primark and assumed the lack of pockets at the front and thinner fabric was because they are cheap Primark ones, but when DS1 also picked some up his had proper pockets and thicker fabric for the same price.
I always assumed it was to keep the line of clothing looking right. We're supposed to be decorative after all so we can't have bulky pockets ruining that. . I didnt know about the weapons thing.

badbadhusky · 11/09/2017 06:47

Sometimes I would just like workwear pocket to slip a tampon in so I don't have announce I'n menstruating to all my colleagues by having to take mynhandbag with me to the loo.

treaclesoda · 11/09/2017 06:48

I was just thinking about this the other day and how annoying it is. I remember my elderly dad shaking his head in disbelief at my then 13 year old niece going shopping with her friends and carrying 'a handbag' (his words) and he felt it was basically her playing dress up pretending to be older. I was Confused and asked where he expected her to put her purse? Turns out he thought women carried bags as a fashion statement, he had never realised that most women's clothes don't have pockets.

DamnDeDoubtanceIsSpartacus · 11/09/2017 06:55

This shows how conditioning starts so early. There won't be any pockets on the girls babygro, but they may have bows, or lace. Boys clothes are useful, girls clothes are pretty.

Everyone needs pockets, apart from babies!

Collidascope · 11/09/2017 07:06

Yes, this drives me mad. Even worse are those fake pockets! You try and put something in them, but no, they're sewn up across the top and are purely for decoration...
I too assumed the lack was down to the male gaze and presenting a shape that isn't 'bulky'.

slightlyglittermaned · 11/09/2017 07:06

I read this one with increasing disbelief - I don't want "interesting" pockets or "stylish holsters", and I don't give a shiny shite about my "culturally problematic" hip area. I just want fucking pockets that fit my goddamn smartphone! www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2014/09/the-gender-politics-of-pockets/380935/

Cheered to hear of ballgowns with pockets Smile

Anditstartsagain · 11/09/2017 07:33

I love pockets it drives me crazy not having them. Thinking about it though I was out yesterday with dp and our 2 boys at a family party I had to give dp my phone becausr I had no decent pickets in my jeans. Dp had 4 large pockets ds1 had 5. Even in zippers and hoodies they seems to have large useful pockets when I don't.

My eyes have been open by this.

DamnDeDoubtanceIsSpartacus · 11/09/2017 07:42

I wear trousers at work exclusively for the pockety goodness, love finding a skirt or a dress with pockets. They are so damn useful. On the one hand it looks like a tiny omission, but on the other it is another way of telling men and women what their role is.

LilithTheKitty · 11/09/2017 08:10

Oh yes hoodies too. Men's hoodies gave inside pockets as well as bigger outside ones. Actually inside pockets on coats and jackets are another thing that is missing. Even on suit blazers.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 11/09/2017 08:20

I wear trousers at work becaus I need to Ben able to run and get down on the floor easily etc. I also need to carry several sets of keys though and the lack of pockets is so,irritatingly.

I have had to return trousers in the past due to lack of pockets. I wear jeans now but the fashion with skinny jeans now seems to be no front pockets, or fake pockets. It's so impractical.

Belt hooks, or lack of are also an issue. I always wear a belt but it's more common to find trousers with no belt hooks these days. I find no belt means I have to hoick my trousers up and due to the pocket issues, I wear one set of keys attached to my belt.

Men's trousers would not be sold without belt hooks or pockets!

clevername · 11/09/2017 08:35

Slightly off topic but still relevant... My DP gets insanely ragey at the impracticality of women's and girls clothes, in particular buttons and zips that do up at the back and require assistance for the wearer to get dressed. He says that men's clothes aren't like that and it's clear evidence of the patriarchy in (subtle) action!

Elendon · 11/09/2017 08:56

Lack of pockets give my young 20s DDs the rage!

I also only buy clothes now with good deep pockets. I need them for my work. and don't give a shiny about spoiling the lines

I saw a lovely photo on Facebook of a woman on her wedding day and the gorgeous dress had two very deep and practical pockets!

Elendon · 11/09/2017 08:57

Oh and forgot. DD1 had to have pockets when a toddler because it was useful for her 'mummums' (dummies). Smile

BruceAndNosh · 11/09/2017 09:04

Someone left a nice man's wool coat at our flat after a party.
We didn't know who it belonged to and no one came to claim it so I nabbed it.
Wonderful coat, it had 2 inside pockets for stuff (one zipped so perfect for keys) as well as nice deep keep your hands warm pockets.
I loved that coat.

IndominusRex · 11/09/2017 09:06

Nothing better than a dress with pockets. Except perhaps for the marvellous front chest pocket on dungarees!!! In terms of jeans I always buy mens now and revel in the ginormous pockets (and long legs as I'm tall).

AtlanticWaves · 11/09/2017 09:10

Yes I like pockets. Especially as I nearly always need a tissue! (allergies in summer, colds in winter)

Fortunately I now work in a fairly casual office so can wear trousers with pockets rather than trouser or skirt suits. I love being able to go to the canteen with just my phone and badge in my pockets rather than lugging my handbag with me.

DS2 ADORES pockets and unfortunately has inherited a fair number of t-shirts from DS1 that don't have pockets so they go unworn. He has a collection of 4 of our old phones and likes one in each pocket of his shorts/trousers (front and back pockets) and one in his t-shirt pocket. It's a disaster if he hasn't got pockets!

fancysquillium · 11/09/2017 09:18

Women's running clothes often have an almost inaccessible (while running) tiny zip pocket at the back, like this 'convenient zipped key pocket' www.wigglestatic.com/product-media/5360106648/Salomon-Women-s-Agile-Short-AW16-Running-Shorts-Black-AW17-L37127800-X-S-0.jpg?w=1600&h=1600&a=7. It's not convenient if you want somewhere to put your gloves once you've warmed up a bit, or tissues for dripping nose in the cold, an energy gel, anything while you are running without slowing you down really.

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 11/09/2017 09:22

I bought mys

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 11/09/2017 09:24

Ooops. I bought myself a snazzy bumbag at the age of 42 as a solution to this issue. My children refuse to go out with me when they see it being lifted off the coat hooks.

It has teeny tiny pompoms though!

Trills · 11/09/2017 09:30

I went to a wedding last weekend in a dress with pockets and you can bet I told everyone.

Modestandatinybitsexy · 11/09/2017 09:32

While pom-poms are cool I resent the fact that you've had to invest in an additional item due to lack of pockets!

I'm glad I'm not the only one with this issue. It's always bothered me but really gave me the rage when I started counting DS's pockets as I have to carry him now as well!
