Police investigate online abuse against Mermaids charity

Did anyone see this in the Guardian yesterday?

www.theguardian.com/society/2017/aug/27/police-investigate-online-abuse-charity-transgender-children-mermaids?CMP=share_btn_tw

I was disappointed by The Guardian's shoddy journalism. Seems a bit of a non-story. Folks on Twitter are saying they've been blocked by Mermaids when they have never interacted with them. Is this some sort of backlash from Mermaids?

OP posts:

if mermaids are encouraging abuse and dodgy practices, which is looks like on the face of it, they will soon be pulled up on it.
They have a 'kids company' shaped scandal about to happen.
It just will take a couple of journalists to do some investigations.
If not then they don't have anything to worry about. The guardian isn't going to protect them, nor the police if they are in the wrong.

Article from Washington times re BLM:
m.washingtontimes.com/news/2016/jul/28/black-lives-matters-real-agenda/

CeeBeeBee · 29/08/2017 19:52

I think it's frightening they have a "TERF blocked" list. It's a step away from doxxing.

PricklyBall · 29/08/2017 20:01

Missy - the Washington Times (from which that article is taken) is a far right newspaper founded by Moon (the founder of the Moonies cult) - if you want to use that as your idea of a reputable source, knock yourself out. Personally I wouldn't trust it further than I could throw it. The article looks to me like a crazed MRA type taking quotes about the "it takes a village to raise a child" idea completely out of context to demonise an organisation.

Back in the day when Mermaids engaged in tweets with other people, transgendertrend highlighted their terrible logic and disordered thinking.

Gendertrender also has a lot to say about them. With a quote from a mother on mumsnet criticising their motives and doubledealing.

I don't think the anti soros has anything to do with being anti- Semitic either- I haven't seen anything that would suggest it is, if anyone can find anything different that supports this theory let me know. Hungary launched an anti Soros campaign and its being backed by israel.
The way I see it the media saying that it is (anti semitic) because anyone dares to say something about Soros, is just another way of shutting people up.

Yes. If you don't have an argument it's far easier just to block everyone who challenges you.

Backingvocals · 29/08/2017 20:14

I had a quick look at the BLM website and it does have that quote on it. I find it a bit odd and I would have thought it would be pretty alienating to a lot of nuclear black families and non-nuclear black families (single parents etc).

OlennasWimple · 29/08/2017 20:21

I'm not blocked from that account Sad I must try harder

kua · 29/08/2017 20:34

Thread from last year discussing Mermaids involvement in a custody case. Worth a read, esp when a member of Mermaids ( the thread had a huge influx of new posters) came onto the thread in order to out/name and discredit a poster and yes I managed to grab the post before it was rightly deleted.

@Ereshkigal - do you mean she's called for people to hack into Lily Maynard's account from the twitter account she uses as a marketing person for Mermaids?! Shock

That really is all kinds of stupid

Are we all aware that Lily is a mum who has a child who decided she wasn't trans after all? The only threat she poses to Mermaids is asking questions.

Datun · 29/08/2017 20:40

JigglyTuff

Is she the one who does those parody ladybird books?

kua · 29/08/2017 20:44

Sorry wrong link above, but very worth reading.

Here's the link to the discussion of the court case involving Mermaids...

JigglyTuff · 29/08/2017 20:45

Yes she is

PencilsInSpace · 29/08/2017 20:49

Well shit that's me on a list somewhere.

It appears I am blocked although I have never interacted directly with them, and I think the above tweet is the only time I have commented on their methods. I must have made it onto the blockbot. I can only do twitter in short bursts with long breaks or it's bad for my MH so I missed this.

I think a charity is not a person and therefore you can't commit a hate crime by criticising a charity, their philosophy and their methods.

Missymoo100 · 29/08/2017 21:05

Prickly ball- Do you have a better interpretation of that quote from the BLM website, or know why they have intentionally left out the word "father" in all their principles. The principles have nothing to do with helping the black community, it says more about transgender people and disrupting nuclear families- I can't think of an explanation for that. As backing vocals said, surely that's alienating to many people. Why does the nuclear family need to be "disrupted"?
It's directly there on their on the website.

Backingvocals · 29/08/2017 21:17

they are also "dismantling cis privilege" and supporting transpeople "especially trans women". There seems to be a particular voice at work here.

I am sorry to find BLM taking this route. It's not my campaign but they have such an important injustice to combat - why go down this route?

AssignedPerfectAtBirth · 29/08/2017 21:30

Why does the nuclear family need to be dismantled? I'm all for accepting all types of families but dismantling one type of family? Or is it because of the cis het white middle class 'normative' stuff? Which would be fucking rich coming from a billionaire. That sort of shit will make people veer to the right IMHO

AssignedPerfectAtBirth · 29/08/2017 21:42

Are you on the blocked list Pencils (you don't have to say obv)

I'm pretty mad about the TERF list , the fact I am blocked by someone who I had no idea of their existence and then that they go running to the press about all the 'abuse'.

I know journos read the GC threads. So Guardian people, why don't you go for a bit of real investigative journalism and stop trying to chase the zeitgeist.

AssignedPerfectAtBirth · 29/08/2017 21:43

Catherine Bennet in the Guardian excepted, of course.

Ereshkigal · 29/08/2017 22:03

Ereshkigal - do you mean she's called for people to hack into Lily Maynard's account from the twitter account she uses as a marketing person for Mermaids?!

Yep, exactly that.

PencilsInSpace · 29/08/2017 22:03

Looks like I'm not on the blockbot list, they must have taken the trouble to block me individually. I am honoured!

I've found the @terfblocker list to be a great resource for finding woman centred women to follow on Twitter Smile

I'm not bothered about being blocked except that it doesn't aid sensible discourse if people block dissenting opinions. I follow all sorts of (sensible) people I strongly disagree with because I want to know what they are saying, argue with them (in a spirit of PARD) and see if there is any common ground to be had.

I might have been a bit sarcastic in the way I pointed out that @Mermaids_Gender were using creepy as fuck tactics to lure young people into an ideology that would see them infertile and dependent on medical intervention for the rest of their lives but I stand by it.

Ereshkigal · 29/08/2017 22:04

Lily Maynard has screenshots. I saw she was still whining about her when I looked on her feed earlier, despite having blocked her weeks ago.

Ereshkigal · 29/08/2017 22:11

Is she the one who does those parody ladybird books?

They are excellent and make some rather effective points Grin

AssignedPerfectAtBirth · 29/08/2017 22:39

Pencils

Yes I am in the process of following people on the list too Grin. Perhaps they might oblige with a follow all button?

I hope they know that anyone blocked person can read any tweets if they log out of twitter and just enter the @handle. Duh

And, if any one wanted to tweet about an account from which they were banned, they could simply do so, but the blocker wouldn't see the tweet.

Being blocked has advantages
