Police investigate online abuse against Mermaids charity

Did anyone see this in the Guardian yesterday?

www.theguardian.com/society/2017/aug/27/police-investigate-online-abuse-charity-transgender-children-mermaids?CMP=share_btn_tw

I was disappointed by The Guardian's shoddy journalism. Seems a bit of a non-story. Folks on Twitter are saying they've been blocked by Mermaids when they have never interacted with them. Is this some sort of backlash from Mermaids?

I'd be very interested that see those purported abusive and threatening tweets. I've seen ones questioning Mermaids tactics in a fairly robust way but they're not abusive.

Datun · 29/08/2017 08:28

Me too JigglyTuff. People are asking questions. And Mermaids is determined to close down the debate.

Apparently the backlash came after an online Daily Mail article raising the question of why so many children are being referred to gender clinics. The comments under the DM article were quite reassuring. Many people questioning the morality of allowing primary school children to go on puberty blockers.

The constant talk of a choice between either a child of the opposite sex, or a dead child. Instantly coupled with the 41% statistic. Manipulative.

So where are they? Where are all these dead teens and preteens?

Where is the list?

I hope they do go after the Guardian. They will definitely be putting the media in the dock. For misrepresenting transgenderism. For helping to promote mass hysteria over the manipulation of the suicide stats. For being unutterably negligent in doing zero due diligence in terms of how autogynephilic men encourage youngers to transition. For turning a blind eye to a group of disturbed children who will potentially grow up medically reliant, mutilated and with no possibility of a normal sex life.

How do I, and most gender critical women, know all about the rape threats, violence and porn soaked fetishes of transactivists, but thousands of journalists, don't?

How have they remained in total ignorance? Because if they haven't, it means they are colluding in an agenda.

They are either woefully stupid, unforgivably ignorant or plain dangerous.

Terfing · 29/08/2017 09:20

Ive seen on Twitter that a few gender-critical feminists are requesting 'right to reply' on this issue. I hope the Guardian allows them, but I doubt it.

Also, someone posted on Twitter that Mermaids are taking sweets and puppies to LGBT events for children! Is this true? Beyond cruel if it is. What do they do with these puppies afterwards? Sad

The article itself is the typical trans response: "Look at all these nasty feminazis! Why won't they just let me live my innocent life! By discussing me, they are literally being violent towards me!"

HandmaidsNightmare · 29/08/2017 09:21

Datun could you post link to that Daily Mail article please?

I saw this too, and was disappointed that the Guardian basically printed a Mermaids press release without doing a.modicum of research .

Sabistick · 29/08/2017 09:35

No longer read guardian, because of this apparent agenda. Switched to the indie, for 'proper' lib journalism. guardian has jumped the shark, as far as im concerned.

Datun · 29/08/2017 09:35

HandmaidsNightmare

It's from the link you posted, about halfway down.

The charity put the rise in abuse down to negative media coverage, citing an article in the Mail on Sunday which explored the number of children receiving puberty-blockers. The article quoted a “trio of top US doctors” who described these blockers as being “‘unsupported by rigorous scientific evidence”.

You're kidding? Sweets and puppies???

What for?

lessworriedaboutthecat · 29/08/2017 09:43

@ Terfing ". What do they do with these puppies afterwards? ". I'm thinking they neuter them.

AssignedPerfectAtBirth · 29/08/2017 09:45

Mermaids seem to have blocked many twitter users who are gender critical but have not tweeted anything specific about Mermaids or Susie Green. However, they have been added to a TERF-Blocker list that is circulating around twitter. It's interesting that people are being targeted because of their objections to transing children. And the Guardian just prints this article, which I agree ItsAll reads like a press release. With a statement from Paris Lees, naturally

It's almost like speaking out about transing children is immoral, unethical even illegal......

AssignedPerfectAtBirth · 29/08/2017 09:47

Yes I saw the puppy think on Twitter Datun. I'll try to find it

Datun · 29/08/2017 09:50

Why the hell did they pick sweets and puppies? Where is their PR team? Even if it was completely unintentional, it smacks of well known tactics to entice children.

Oblomov17 · 29/08/2017 09:53

What a mess!!

BathshebaOak1 · 29/08/2017 09:57

Surely the sweets and puppies thing is a wind up? Sweets and puppies are the cliche thing that child abductors use to entice children as Datun said.

Zoloh · 29/08/2017 09:59

I can't bear the Guardian any more. Stopped buying it! Stopped reading it online even.

JigglyTuff · 29/08/2017 10:00

I don't think they have a PR team. They spend only £50k a year on an income of £80k. Susie Green is Mermaids

HandmaidsNightmare · 29/08/2017 10:01

Thanks Datun [half asleep still!]
All in all Mermaids doesn't appear very professional. But people lap it up if they hear there are hate messages targeting a charity. A TERF blocker list!? Wtf? We're talking about kids who need help, and they're using play ground tactics.

Not a wind up but taken out of proportion. They do have free sweets and their stalls and they did tweet a pic of a dog on their stall, saying he was there for hugs or similar.

However, what I find more disturbing is the way they explicitly reach out to.young people without parental support.

Datun · 29/08/2017 10:03

AssignedPerfectAtBirth

Dear God !! That is as creepy as fuck. Have some sweets, come and hug this cute dog, come to us if you have no parental support.

Most parents would have spent the best part of their children's whole lives drilling into them not to succumb to this kind of stuff!

What is wrong with them?!

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 29/08/2017 10:21

I'm going to be charitable and assume they think they are being welcoming and inclusive, and that if a child has no parental support it is because the parents are transphobic bigots.

Some people just aren't very good at thinking deeply and critically, indeed, Susie Green can't really afford to think too hard after what she did to her son.

HandmaidsNightmare · 29/08/2017 10:27

Yes ItsAllGoingToBeFine

"However, what I find more disturbing is the way they explicitly reach out to.young people without parental support"

That's what really worried me too. They have no right to do this. There are many parents trying so hard to protect their kids from this. We try to help our kids to live happily in their bodies. We don't need strangers at Pride, under the guise of a charity, telling them they are wrong in their bodies.

HandmaidsNightmare · 29/08/2017 10:31

JigglyTuff They have a volunteer marketing manager who is really quite abusive to people on Twitter.
