I was visiting the Coventry Transport Museum today and came across this sign on their display. I've written it out below in case you can't view the image.

Annual average salary for men 1900s £70
Annual average salary for women 1900s £30

Annual average salary for men today £26,500
Annual average salary for women today £26,500

I'm not really sure how to articulate what I want to say here, and I didn't get chance to raise it with museum staff when I was there. I'd like to email them and ask how on Earth the average salaries can be the same but I thought I'd ask here if anyone could see where they could have interpreted this from salary data.

Weird isnt it, I've just googled and there is nothing on the first page

In the 70s you were allowed to publish both averages. Now you are not allowed to discriminate Grin

What averages are they taking? Worldwide? UK?

I guess it more difficult than expected to calculate

ONS for 2016 says c30k for men and c25k for women ( based on full time employees) so no idea. I'd expect a museum to provide citations.
