Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Can we talk about this lip filler fashion

I'm just wondering if there is some feminist analysis for the current fashion for lip fillers. I don't want to slate the women who are doing it, just understand what the hell its all about!

My thoughts on it are:

  • it must be porn related?
  • are they designed to look like labia on your face?
  • it seems to be some obvious expression of sexual availability?
  • I've never spoken to a man who finds it attractive so that's confusing
  • it seems to make women look 'vulnerable' and low in self-esteem somehow, is that what is attractive? (Reminds me of the old feminist arguement about high heels being attractive because they render women unable to defend themselves I.e. Run away)

What's everyone else's view on this?

(And it is a feminist issue because it's women doing it to themselves)

16 Candles shocked the hell out of me when I re-watched it! There was one particular scene where a girl was passed out drunk and a guy was told to have fun with her, or something along those lines.

The main 'dreamy' character says 'There's a girl passed out in my bedroom that I could violate in 10 different way's if I wanted to.' Then he does a deal with the younger guy to swap Molly's knickers for his passed out girlfriend. The younger guy is a bit hesitant (even though he was shown being a creep earlier) but the hero gives him the keys to his dad's car and tells the wasted girl that the younger guy is actually him, to ensure she'd be down for whatever.

Some of the problematic stuff you can put down to the 80's being a different time. This scene is worse than Georgie Burgess in the Slapper.

The Snapper even! Freudian slip there.

My sister has lip fillers and she’s a lesbian so the men thing- not necessarily likely.
I think it’s because the beauty industry homogenises attractiveness so that only one face is deemed acceptable- that Instagram alien face with the creepy contouring and massive eyebrows and lips.
It’s just a trend that’s driven by advertising.
But yes, it’s pretty sad.

"Are you jealous" (of women with lip fillers) may be the funniest thing I've ever read on here. Why? If we wanted them we'd get them.

Agreed with Dansk btw - I can't stand contouring. Up close it just makes the person look like they need to wash their face, and I've seen a couple of celebrity TV interview where I was going "you realize it looks like a child smudged stripes down either side of your nose, right?"

I imagine that to some degree the lip filler thing started as a response to ageing. I have always had full lips but at 41, I think they are smaller now and I know that their fullness comes with a fast approaching expiry date as lips thin with age. And the thing is, I don't want to age. And we can say that that's because of a societal disregard for older women, and yes part of that's true. But I also don't want to get old and die, I want to have the health and fitness of a 26 year old forever. When I look in the mirror and see a woman who could be mistaken for late 20s/early 30s I feel relief. And yes, in part because society sees that younger looking woman as more attractive. But to a greater degree because I'm hoping that my more youthful appearance is a sign that I will stay very fit and healthy well into my late 80s, like my still dancing 89 year old grandmother.

I'm not going to get lip fillers because 1. they look like total shite, but 2. because even if they did look good and make me appear more youthful, they wouldn't be any sort of natural indicator of my actual youthfulness. But I can see how some people are attracted to the illusion.

Cor.

Impressive zombie revival here.

I'd love to see whether FWR can keep the thread going for longer than the fashion trend itself. (Mind you, I usually notice fashion trends only when they've reached their final throes anyway.)
