Oh ffs.

I've just seen this photo on FB. It's made me irrationally angry, men in the comments talking about how women 'make up rapes' and some even saying it protects both men and women somehow..?
So. Instead of focusing on the issue of men raping women we should get women to sign pieces of paper to say it's fine?
I can't even put into words all the reasons this is fucked up.

Oh ffs.

Rape and false accusations of rape are both very serious things. Imo neither should be joked about and neither should be ignored or overlooked.

VestalVirgin · 11/08/2017 12:39

False accusations of rape almost never fucking happen, and are discussed waaay to much in proportion to, you know, how often it actually happens.

Let's focus on the fact that men rape. That's an epidemic.

False accusations of crime are a tiny subgroup of crimes and not a societal problem that needs talking about by anyone who's not a professional in the field of crime.

Neverknowing · 11/08/2017 12:41

True @InFairness but this meme is acting as though it happens all the time. Women are reporting rapes that didn't happen all day long when I actual fact this doesn't happen! VERY few reported rapes are false allegations. Yes this is serious for many reasons but the actual rape is more serious imo because it's more prevalent.
As datun says, lots of allegations are considered to be false when they are withdrawn. Usually women just don't want to be prodded at when they've been through the trauma of rape!?

Exactly this.

Also as a pp said the stats on false rape allegations are the same as the stats for false allegations of any kind (robbery etc). So why is it so readily talked about over us talking about the fact that a large amount of people are raped everyday? Part of the reason a lot of women don't report the fact they've been raped is because of precisely this! No one gets this scrutiny when reporting other types of crimes.

Datun - because men are allowed to drink and have fun. Women aren't. Isn't it obvious?

Nonibaloni · 11/08/2017 13:00

Let's remember rape is the only crime where you have to prove it happened first.

If you say your car has been stolen the police assume it has been and start investigating. If they then discover it in your garage they deal with it.
There would be an outcry if it was any different. But say you've been raped by someone you know (statistically most likely) and a lot of people will raise an eyebrow. More say if he's rich and powerful and good looking.

Xenophile · 11/08/2017 13:11

Quite, Nonibaloni.

MrGH, Datun answered your question to me, so I hope that suffices.

Oh ffs.
MrGHardy · 11/08/2017 13:32

Yes, good to know and use in debates and very great analogy in the photo.

Datun · 11/08/2017 16:14

Xenophile

That analogy is great. What does the last word mean? Where the officer says 'word'.

ISaySteadyOn · 11/08/2017 16:21

It's an Americanism. It means you agree. Or it did when I was growing up there.

DeleteOrDecay · 11/08/2017 16:38

Yes they should, but given false rape accusations are actually very very rare, it gets a hell of a lot of coverage.

In fact, whenever a rape case makes the news the following comments are always filled with whataboutary, usually in relation to the victim: what was she doing there at that time, why was she wearing that, why did she go off with him, she must have regretted it the next morning etc.

The vitriol that rape victims receive both online and in RL is awful to the point where some are hounded out of their house and home and have to move to start a new life under a new identity.

Needless to say if I ever get attacked in this way I probably won't report it. I don't think I would have the mental strength to cope with everything a rape allegation and court case (if it even for that far) entails.

Xenophile · 11/08/2017 16:39

What ISay said, Datun Smile

Datun · 11/08/2017 17:57

Thanks isay.
