Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Deleting threads....

I understand why goady threads are deleted, but does anyone agree with me that it's a shame? Sometimes they are deleted after a lot of thoughtful and interesting posts have been made, and it's a shame to lose them. does it really matter if the original post was disingenuous if the subsequent discussion is useful?

Can HQ lock threads? Close them so no one can respond any more but you can still read. That's the default response on another board I'm on when it's obvious that someone isn't acting in good faith but others are. Plus banning the clown, obviously.

Yes, I'd prefer them to be locked rather than deleted too if that's possible.

BertrandRussell · 29/07/2017 16:14

But why not just keep posting? There are always more genuine posters than disingenuous ones and the faux naïf OPs are often the sorts of things non/anti/new feminists want to ask too.

I always think your beliefs and views should stand up to scrutiny and be consistent enough that they can be tested with obscure hypothetical situations - isn't that what ancient philosophers used to do? I do it in my own mind to work out how I feel about things and where I draw certain lines etc. And the nice thing about discussions online is you can read thoughtful, sensible views that neatly deal with straw man arguments and so on, whereas in real life those people wouldn't get a word in edgeways!

Could we ask that GF threads be locked and moved to a dedicated board to house them. Call it The Graveyard Grin

No, I don't agree with you.

Is has been thrashed out several times in Site Issues (the right topic and one which MNHQ routinely reads and responds to). I've reported this thread, so they can see it and comment on it if they wish.

Funny spoof threads I like to see stay. But they don't always.

Because anything that seems like trolling goes, and I think it's utterly correct that it does. In all topics.

If someone asks for real, then they will get the same responses and it will be helpful to them. It's nit as if there's any shibboleth on MN about starting multiple threads on the same topic.

But there is one on posts/posters which break talk guidelines.

If you think those guidelines are wrong, it is a debate which needs to be had where MNHQ can see it, and in a topic which has lots of traffic (perhaps stickied in active).

What there won't be is different thresholds for trolling in different topics. Unless you actually want to attract trolls (whose aim never is to provide a useful platform, but rather to disrupt) to those parts of MN.
