I don't care if I'm banned but do you remember Shoop from Salt N' Pepa and What a Man by Vogue in the 90's? They objectified men! No one seems to remember that, though.

I feel like it's selective; you're either this type of feminist or not.

I love the students being kicked out for disrespecting Aretha. This whole thread reminds me of drinking vodka from mugs whilst sitting on the stairs at student parties . . .no idea why. Maybe we talked about Salt-N-Pepa then too.

I wear tight clothing, high heeled shoes
It doesn't mean that I'm a prostitute, no no
I like rap music, wear hip hop clothes
That doesn't mean that I'm out sellin' dope no no
Oh my forgive me for having straight hair, no
It doesn't mean there's another blood in my heir yeah yeah
I might date another race or color
It doesn't mean I don't like my strong black brothers.

@TrollTheRespawnJeremy thanks. I need to go and listen to her again. I haven't done it in while. Loving this thread already. Grin

TrollTheRespawnJeremy · 13/04/2017 23:32

Half of destiny's child in the late 90s, early naughties girl power.

Let's not for get pink. Including "stupid girls" being a big one.

MrsTerryPratchett · 13/04/2017 23:47

How did I miss P!nk??!??

TrollTheRespawnJeremy · 13/04/2017 23:48

Missunderstood was a cracking album.

quencher · 13/04/2017 23:53

Christiana Aguilera did a few good ones too. Fighter, the song with lil Kim( can't hold us down) and the voice within

Kelly clackson. Stronger, because of you

Independent women, survivor,

MrsTerryPratchett · 14/04/2017 00:06

Even Taylor Swift, who I have mixed feelings about, has done some good ones. We are never ever ever ever getting back together. Would have done me some good with various idiots I went out with in my teens.

tabulahrasa · 14/04/2017 00:23

"Even Taylor Swift, who I have mixed feelings about, has done some good ones."

I'll stop very slowly quoting let's talk about sex lyrics Grin

Fifteen, I love fifteen...

That is a great thread you linked to, IAmAmy.

Will give it a proper read later.

DJBaggySmalls · 14/04/2017 09:46

2 examples from 20 years ago proves it. Well done OP, you have smashed feminism.
If only you could use your astonishing skills for good. You could end domestic violence or child abuse or something.

IAmAmy · 14/04/2017 12:14

Thanks HmmOkay, there's a lot of fantastic music and suggestions of artists on it!

OP, I think I misinterpreted your original post. I thought you were saying that Feminism and Women's Rights is a bullshit topic whereas now I think you were stating that 90s R and B is a bit of a trivial thing to post about in FWR and therefore calling the 90s R and B stuff a bullshit topic.

Sorry. Maybe some of the replies were a bit on the chippy side because other people had that same misunderstanding.

Good and interesting thread anyways.

quencher · 15/04/2017 20:44

In the 1990s a lot of music of black origin focused on how 'gangsta', 'pimpin', 'bitches' etc. For black women (and probably some white) there was a definite trend towards 'bad boys'. So the fact that this song celebrates men who treat their mothers nicely and are good dads is interesting lyrical content for the era. This absolutely bugged me. I know why now.
Whitney Huston dominated the 90s.
So did Mariah carry, Erykar badu, Lauren hill, Janet Jackson, Sade, Gabriel, tracy chapman., brandy and Monica. Just a few. They all stayed in the charts for weeks.

Not forgetting Toni braxton and fem-forward song you ain't man enough for me. The 90s was when she flourished.

And no! Am not denying the bad boy image. But to write a while group off. Nope! Am not here for that. Not forgetting Celina Dion in the whole female category.

OlennasWimple · 15/04/2017 22:53

I wanna really really really wanna zigazigah

quencher · 16/04/2017 22:56

Bills bills bills came out in 1999 and was DC's breakout song so I wouldn't really include them as being indicative of UK (or US) listening habits in the 1990s. Correcting this one too.
"No no no" was their debut single and it was in 1997.

faithinthesound · 18/04/2017 06:25

It's like pouring a cup of hot water into the ocean. Newflash: it does nothing. The ocean is still cold.

And a handful of pieces of media that objectified/objectify men did/does/will do nothing to change the sea of media that objectifies women.

So there is still a point to feminism, because your so-called evidence that "women objectify men too" amounts to little more than a token niche movement of music from twenty years ago. Time has marched on, but progress sure hasn't.

HoneyDragon · 18/04/2017 06:33

Op has a point about better times in the 90's these guys could choose to wear their hair like this and no one suggested they have surgery, use the women's restrooms and only be nominated for best female grammys.Wink

This is such a bullshit topic
GinIsIn · 18/04/2017 06:43

OP are you actually one of Salt n Pepa and hoping posting here will boost your royalties...?
