I don't care if I'm banned but do you remember Shoop from Salt N' Pepa and What a Man by Vogue in the 90's? They objectified men! No one seems to remember that, though.

I feel like it's selective; you're either this type of feminist or not.

I'm just saying we're going backwards to what? Are you praising salt n pepa or are you slating them? Confused

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 13/04/2017 23:03

Praising them! Seems like they were more femi-forward than we are now, by a long shot.

Some are Troll. I particularly like Chvrches, Warpaint and most of all Wolf Alice (m.youtube.com/watch?v=tcJDrnYmlvs / m.youtube.com/watch?v=wTsN7uugtfg amongst many others I'd like to paste and have on another thread). I rather like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs too!

I've never been much of a fan of those, but will confess to singing along to the odd track or two if they come on, even if silently in my head so as not to embarrass myself Wink

tabulahrasa · 13/04/2017 23:07

I don't think we should talk about this, might misunderstand what we're trying to say, you know?

ladyballs · 13/04/2017 23:07

Push It was 87. Grin

treaclesoda · 13/04/2017 23:07

British bands of the 90's like Elastica, Alisha's Attic, Portishead, Cardigans, Cranberries, Garbage could all be considered as fairly feminist offerings as well.

The Cranberries weren't British.

quencher · 13/04/2017 23:07

Auh! Then that fifth harmony song is the opposite of praise. Now I know hat you talking about.

Yes to the 90s, the songs from black women where very feminist pro girl power but in less spice girl way.

treaclesoda · 13/04/2017 23:08

And Garbage were only a quarter British.

treaclesoda · 13/04/2017 23:09

And The Cardigans weren't British either.

MrsTerryPratchett · 13/04/2017 23:10

Missy Elliott produced music like that into the 2000s so it didn't stop in the 1980s. Some would argue for Beyonce, but I dont currently see it. Katy Perry has some good lyrics and shes all over the radio.

I`m looking for mainstream, you understand! Meghan Trainor?

IAmAmy · 13/04/2017 23:10

Catherine from Happy Valley too. Sally Wainwright's Bronte sisters drama was great as well.

NowtAbout · 13/04/2017 23:10

Salt n peppa were not ever cool, not even when they did their big hits and I was 12 Grin

TrollTheRespawnJeremy · 13/04/2017 23:11

I think there's a lot of bands, groups, singers that are femi-forward but that don't get half the press attention etc because they're not falling out of nightclubs/celeb drama etc.

Kimbra for example. Fab Kiwi musician. Possibly best known in UK for being the girl in 'Somebody that I used to know' by Gotye. Really superb musician.

Or... off the top of my head... Emilie Nicolas. MO. Elliphant.

There is a lot of artists out there but they aren't part of the celeb game so there's not a 'cultural awareness' of them as such.

tabulahrasa · 13/04/2017 23:12

To the people at home or in the crowd, It keeps coming up anyhow
Don't decoy, avoid, or make void the topic...

TrollTheRespawnJeremy · 13/04/2017 23:12

Hang on- I am shook. The Cardigans weren't British!? googles My childhood was a lie Grin

IAmAmy · 13/04/2017 23:12

Sorry I was talking about female artists I loved rather than feminist lyrics specifically, although they are feminists.

quencher · 13/04/2017 23:15

Yes to @MrsTerryPratchett Katy Perry's roar is fem-forward and agree with Meghan trainer and Beyoncé, sia, lady gaga to the list.

There was a time I was in love with Kimbra. I didn't know she was a kiwi. Why was she singing about naming her child Nebraska then? I assumed she was American.

TrollTheRespawnJeremy · 13/04/2017 23:15

I particularly like Chvrches as well. Lauren always comes across v. well in interviews. Fab role model.

treaclesoda · 13/04/2017 23:16

The Cardigans are as British as Saga Noren, which brings a nice circularity to the thread Smile

HmmOkay · 13/04/2017 23:17

Ha!

Just remembered in my student days when I was a young lass. We had invited some young fellas from Material Sciences around to our flat and put on some Aretha Franklin to listen to. One of the young men opined that Aretha wasn't much of a singer and my flat-mate flew into a rage and booted him out of the flat for the crime of Disrespecting Aretha. She had my full support of course.

Oh, happy days.

IAmAmy · 13/04/2017 23:18

She is Troll, had to put up with so much misogyny too for standing up to it and speaking out about it.

TrollTheRespawnJeremy · 13/04/2017 23:18

quencher I took it that calling the child Nebraska was a tongue in cheek joke at child-naming trends given that the whole song was about the manic 'marry me' woman trope.

Sweets101 · 13/04/2017 23:18

Has anyone mentioned En Vogue yet? Loved them!

Sweets101 · 13/04/2017 23:19

Ha just seen they are in the OP! I will now take my shame and leave. Goodnight!
