Prostitution; help me argue on Facebook

I'm arguing with a friend on FB about prostitution. She is the most libfem, choosy choice, libertarian person I know. Currently at college so every second post is about gender neutral bathrooms and the like. I almost never engage.

But her argument is that most prostitution is hidden and therefore we can't know that these workers aren't happy, healthy, free and consenting. I've given her the PTSD stats and the violence and rape stats. But she is insisting that these invisible women are all loving it.

Any stats on home-based, self-employed workers? Also, I know that people here have said that workers' organisations are frequently dominated by pimps. Where's the proof of that. And, former workers who are radfem/anti-sex work and have written pieces about it?

The strategy is to criminalize the sex industry as far as is posssible. This won't happen because much of our GDP comes from the sex industry (including the criminal side of it), hence government inaction. But in principle it is what should happen.

And secondly you threaten anyone who is thinking of engaging in forms of abuse or exploitation with such severe penalties that they think twice.

If you look at child porn or commit rape, you get a life sentence. End of.

Well of course. Would you argue that female abusers should not be punished to? That society should not be protected from them?

Most people who abuse are men, and they should face a penalty for what they do to women, girls and boys. But if there are any women who abuse, they should be dennounced and punished not one iota less.

Do you know what someone who sexually abuses a child does to that childs mind? What a tormented life and death they can potentially be consigned to?

If you are guilty of this you should, whatever your gender, be punished mercilessly by the state.

Yes and a lot of those twisted minds can grow into abusers themselves, so actually I even have a mote of empathy.

Not to the point of not locking them safely away from children, but I'd like to study them to better able shift the minds of those who have been abused away from that destiny.

I would self describe my position as being passionate about protecting children, I have never relished punishing people. The two most important planks to me are protecting law abiding citizens and rehabilitation.

That doesn't mean I think prisons should opulent places of luxury, and some people's liberty should be curtailed to protect the rest of us. However I dont ever take pleasure in other people's suffering no matter what they have done.

I think that the urge to be violent is the underlying reason for your confusing occupation of this thread independent.

You want to be violent and are looking for ways to justify it and for witnesses and converts, so you can cling to your self-appointed moral superiority. It isn't very fair.

I'm interested in the view re punishing women equally to men, as i thought the stats mentioned showed that women don't ever offend responsibly..They only do things because they are mentally ill or coerced? Men are responsible and culpable, but women are guided by other hands, or illness, so they shouldn't get equal punishment, surely?
