Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Sexism? Racism? Both?

I'm posting here to restrain myself from again challenging someone on FB. He never listens to me anyway and he's married to someone I love...

He posted something saying that the Black actor (Dixon) in Hamilton who called out Pence is sexist. Allegedly Dixon has made comments on Twitter about 'white women' and therefore it's ironic that he challenged Pence. This posted by a man who repeatedly makes awful sexist jokes about women on FB.

Then I thought about all the men who are soooo worried about Sharia law. They only seem to care about women's safety and rights when a) the men 'threatening' them are Black or Muslim or both and b) when caring makes no impact on their own ability to be sexist. Oh and c) when the women threatened are white.

So is the main issue here racism, sexism or both? Is it just a privilege soup. Or, my favourite explanation; that men just see women as objects which they own and their racism means that they see Black or Muslim men as a threat to their 'property'.

I have no idea what you're on about with that "you are really going to struggle to build relationships" nonsense, I already have plenty of great ones. Unless you mean romantic relationships in which case if not accepting any misogyny from a boy/man makes me "struggle" to do so then so be it. You seem determined to read things into what I post which suit how you've already decided you'd like to respond, this isn't the first time you've ranted on at something you've decided I've said in such a manner.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 21/11/2016 18:52

What targeting is there of breast cancer screening beyond a leaflet being sent by the NHS when you reach a certain age suggesting you have a mammogram?

Pizanfan · 21/11/2016 18:53

'there are degrees of sexism, and they interact with racism and religious bigotry in ways that I'm not best placed, as a white atheist women, to talk about. It's a minefield.'

Why are sexism and racism related?

By religious bigotry do you think a dislike of Islam is bigoted?

As a HUMAN BEING you have the right to think, and talk about whatever you think, do not be opressed by race baiting main stream media into not being allowed to voice your opinion on say cologne, or BLM because you are white. Thats like saying you can't talk about a certain sport because you are a woman!

Every person is equal, and every persons opinion is as valid, or not valid as everyone elses on every subject.

FreshwaterSelkie · 21/11/2016 18:54

Is anybody else wondering what posts Pizan is reading and responding to? Because it's not the ones I'm reading. It's like there's a whole parallel debate going on in their head.

Pizanfan · 21/11/2016 18:56

Amy

Ok, lets take it from an individual standpoint...

Do you think all men are sexist?

Do you think all white men are sexist/racist/homophobic etc...?

Because all of your comments are eluding to yes, and you are labelling billions of men, hundreds of millions of white men as being flawed compared to you who are enlightened.

I'm not having a go at you, I just find your mistrust of men, and your comments to be hertbreaking at such a young age.

Pizanfan · 21/11/2016 18:56

Fresh

Please read, it's all in English, shouldn't be that difficult.

FreshwaterSelkie · 21/11/2016 18:57

Sorry to derail what could be an interesting and serious thread, but I am PMSL that Lass has mis-posted on the wrong thread, and it STILL makes more sense than what Pizan posts Grin

Sorry. Back to the topic.

IAmAmy · 21/11/2016 18:58

The answer to both your questions is "no" and how on Earth you've read into anything I've said as suggesting they'd be "yes" is beyond me. I also don't recall ever claiming to be "enlightened", in various posts I've if anything emphasised how much I'm still learning about all kinds of things.

You seem to find heartbreaking that I don't much like misogyny.

MrsTerryPratchett · 21/11/2016 19:00

Why are sexism and racism related? Really? You have no idea? Really. Prejudice and discrimination based on a physical characteristic? Systematic oppression? Othering? Being considered property of the dominant group? Being denied the vote? Equal pay? No relationship at all...

I don't know how to break it to you, but Lass hasn't misposted, she was responding to the breast cancer link posted by Xenophile.

Biscuit?

Pizanfan · 21/11/2016 19:03

You are constanty accusing white men of being sexist and racist, however I am happy to chalk this down to me not paying attention thus far and just skim reading. So I will be more vigilant in the future.

DeviTheGaelet · 21/11/2016 19:05

fresh Grin

I agree with what you say about cologne. I got a right flaming on here for saying how odd it was that men were outraged by cologne yet saw no reason to comment on behaviour like cheds. Oh well.

mrstp I think there is also an element of men being able to distance themselves from sexism they perceive as being by "Muslims" or black people by othering them.

FreshwaterSelkie · 21/11/2016 19:06

Biscuit yourself, love.

DeviTheGaelet · 21/11/2016 19:06

I don't know about anyone else but I'm finding it hard to follow the thread if I read Pizans posts so I'm not bothering. Hopefully it'll help things flow Smile

FreshwaterSelkie · 21/11/2016 19:08

You're right, devi. I think I'll do that in future. I'd like to pay more attention to the good faith parts of the debate, and I've already missed some of that on this thread.

Pizanfan · 21/11/2016 19:10

'cologne. I got a right flaming on here for saying how odd it was that men were outraged by cologne yet saw no reason to comment on behaviour like cheds.'

Big difference is Cologne attacks were all illegal, and Evans was found innocent in a court of law. Pretending you were in the room and saw exactly what happened is doing a disservice to women!

Xenophile · 21/11/2016 19:11

Lass, from the article and the bumph I've seen in GP waiting rooms, all the pictures are of white women, which by omission may imply that only white women get breast cancer or even that only white women should have regular mammograms.

If this is true even in places where there is a large BAME population, then this might be viewed as at best, ethnically insensitive, if that makes sense?

YonicProbe · 21/11/2016 19:14

Pizan

Ched was found guilty once, had Romeo appeal requests turned down, was allowed by the CCRC (with stated reservations)
to introduce past sexual history, was retried without his previous co defendant being cross examined and was found not to be guilty beyond reasonable doubt

He was not "found innocent" as our legal system doesn't work that way.

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 21/11/2016 19:16

pizan

devi wasnt referring to things happening months apart

Ched was found guilty a few years ago and 'men' were not making comments about him in the same way they did about cologne...or at least i believe that is what devi is comparing

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 21/11/2016 19:16

Oooh crosspost with yonic

Xenophile · 21/11/2016 19:17

And yes, absolutely Devi

Jess Philips still gets shit for stating the bloody obvious that similar levels of sexual assaults happen every week in clubs and pubs in parts of the UK, but no one bothers to comment because it's not imagrunts doing it. And I know there was supposed to be an organised element to the attacks in Germany, but I'm not convinced that the lack of coordination and similar numbers in the UK is any better.

Just a small point of order, what happened in Koln wasn't illegal at the time.

Pizanfan · 21/11/2016 19:18

My apologies, I was typing quickly, but you know what I mean. Running around in gangs assaulting strangers in coordinated attacks is not the same as drunken idiocy.

Evans might be all sorts of scummy, but it's very different to what happened in Cologne

Xenophile · 21/11/2016 19:19

A sex offender is a sex offender is a sex offender.

DeviTheGaelet · 21/11/2016 19:21

Actually regardless of whether he is a rapist, walking in on your mate having sex with a drunk woman, asking him if you can "have a go" and then walking out immediately afterwards without speaking one word to the woman involved seems very sexist to me rufus. But interestingly many men seem more focused on his hurt feelings.
I wonder if the same would have happened if he'd been a Muslim immigrant (apart from not being able to fund the search for new evidence and the appeal).

Pizanfan · 21/11/2016 19:22

Rufus

Every guy I know called him a dirty rapist when he was convicted, 60k people signed a petition, and Oldham fans boycotted games when they were in discussion of signing him.
