Apparently Glamour decided this year to run a "Man of the year" category in the "Woman of the year" awards Confused

I can't decide if it's a necessary step to try to raise more publicity after last year's Caitlyn Jenner award, or if they are just idiots.

Here's an inspirational quote
Bono said in a statement Tuesday from Glamour that the battle for gender equality won’t be won unless men step up and lead alongside women.

Because I am a cynical person, I have this strong feeling that part of the reason they did it was so everyone would go one about how he's THE FIRST MAN EVER TO WIN WOTY!! thereby tricking everyone into forgetting that two men have already won.

Dear lord OneFlew. That's a pretty sobering list of winners. Not one of them is a woman. Pathetic.

I had to laugh

It is so ridiculously stupid. Maybe the Pope will win next year

It's all a bit weird because according to this en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glamour_Awards they've been including a Man Of The Year for ages so heaven knows what all this "first man" rubbish is about.

OneFlew's list is a shade misleading. Caitlyn Jenner was indeed their overall capital letter underscored WOTY for that year (with loads of other women getting specific awards), but Laverne Cox was just one amongst many female winners, and Bono is one man amongst a big list of people with two X chromosomes. Frankly if he hasn't killed anyone then they're making steps in the right direction.

It's a publicity stunt. Nothing more.
And Bono is a twat. If he wasn't he would have politely declined the award.

Laverne Cox cannot have been "one amongst many female winners." Laverne Cox is a transwoman, thus male.

Maybe next year they could bring Trump in?

Would seem to fit the progression nicely.

Come on Xeno, unfair, America's about to get its first woman president. Trumps transitioning.

OK prawn, "Laverne Cox was one winner amongst many other female winners".

The point is that that OneFlew's list gave the impression that they haven't given any double X women their top award in three years and that's a bit misleading

"Bono is one man amongst a big list of people with two X chromosomes."

Yes, there are 11 other female recipients of the award this year. Can you name them? Probably not because everyone is talking about Bono, not them.

Redrocketship · 02/11/2016 16:44

Oh and "double x women"? Surely "women" should suffice? Bono, Caitlyn Jenner and laverne cox are not "XY women". They are males

I'm staying neutral. "Double X women" is undeniably accurate, not ambiguous, pisses everybody off slightly but won't be appallingly offensive to anyone or get me deleted.

IsIt... the very idea of Trump transitioning is a hoot! Can you imagine?

Are there really no senior women working on the Poverty Is Sexist campaign who could've got this award?

I'd seen this floating around on Twitter and has assumed it was some sort of ironic joke.

There is no way a man should be woman of the year, even if he is going to show women how to do feminism properly.

Surely the whole point of a woman of the year award, is that women would never win a person of the year award. Awarding women of the year to a man just shows that even when women are given their own special category, a man is still better.

Ridiculous decision IMO.

WTF can't men step up and follow where women are leading? Why do they need to do the leading themselves?

Report
ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 02/11/2016 20:15

Because they have a deep down certainty that women can't / shouldn't lead?

Report
JosephineMaynard · 02/11/2016 21:03

This is ridiculous.

A list for "Women of the Year" should be a list that's exclusively for women. Surely they could have found another inspirational woman to replace Bono on their list if they'd tried?

It's great that Bono's campaigning for women's rights, but if they want to recognise his campaigning, then they should create a new award - male ally of the year, feminist man of the year, or whatever - and give him that.

TotallyOuting · 02/11/2016 23:47

"Double X women" is undeniably accurate

No, it's really not. Qualifying 'women' with 'double X' is redundant, and implies there's another kind of woman. Which is most definitely not accurate.

I think this is a publicity stunt and I think Bono should have turned it down.

There are certainly XXX women, and XY people assigned female gender from birth due to androgen insensitivity or some other reason, who almost everybody would call women.

Whether there are also transgender women is a philosophical question on which there are different opinions. "Double X women" leaves the question open - it may or may not be tautologous, but it's not incorrect.

Report
WinchesterWoman · 03/11/2016 00:00

It's not in any way a philosophical question.
