Speechless at the lack of quesitoning by the reporter about the assumptions on gender expressed by this mother. She is screwing up an already confused child, when all she needed to say was "girls can wear trousers and like Wolverine." I am going to complain to Radio 4.

Is this the mother who regularly asks their child what gender they are today? And who's other mother 'came out' as a vegetarian?

Typical mish-mash of male/female, boy/girl, masculine/feminine as if these are all equivalent. Whereas they said:
"I got really frustrated because I asked why none of the girls got boys' parts in a play that we were doing."
Which is a perfectly valid question, and no reason why girls can't play Hamlet and so on (especially if they have chosen a play with few decent parts for girls playing girls!). Instead, this becomes evidence that someone isn't entirely a girl.

And frankly, I find the mothers reported question:
" You've always been more attracted to boys, would you be gay man or a straight man?" You don't like the 'girl' stereotypes, so let's see if the 'gay man' ones fit you any better -- of a TEN year-old who has quite rightly noticed that (some) of the expected girl stuff is a right pain!

This line:
"There isn't a body of the two genders. I just wish there was some way in the middle." is quite scary. To me this sounds like a line of thought that ends up with someone with top but not bottom surgery as some sort of 'in-between' body.

This person needs to be told that being female doesn't mean you have to feel like anything.

If you are teaching English in the UK I think it is pretty disgraceful to be unaware of the well established tradition of actresses (deliberate choice of word) playing male Shakespeare roles. There is no reason why that can't be done in a classroom.

Adult transactivists are highly vested in transing children. Men who enjoy cross-dressing and now want to get into women's toilets see the chance to back up the narrative that gender is truly innate, and the younger the better. Another bit of this that really annoys me is the appropriation of the issues surrounding intersex children. Given the struggles there to not operate on kids. What are we telling those kids?

Saying you're not a boy and not a girl to most people (unless you are actually intersex) this is just nonsensical. You are really one or the other. You could be a non-feminine, non-gender-conforming interesting type of girl who wanted to play Hamlet in the school play ('cos that's the best part not that I think 10 year olds are doing Hamlet but I can't think of a suitable play!). Doesn't mean you're not a girl just 'cos you don't feel like whatever it is society thinks a girl ought to feel like......

And honestly, if a kid said to me they weren't a boy or a girl, then I would logically expect that to mean they were intersex!

This is awful - who on earth, upon hearing their kid get frustrated that they can't play a male part because they're a girl, in a primary school play, thinks that the problem is with the girl, not with the school!

On another forum I fell into conversation with a MTT talking about puberty blockers for boys, and he said had some very worrying opinions around not letting puberty 'spoil' their young bodies. So I think there is also an element in the Trans community that has much more nefarious purposes for pushing trans at non-gender-conforming (ridiculous phrase - as if someone could produce any kind of list) kids.

My DD was shown a video at school about a girl who from the age of two was saying she was a boy. Obviously it was about trans*.

I asked DD if there would be an issue if babies were not decked out in pink and blue from the year dot. I am SO angry. Not at DD but that this is being peddled in schools as the new orthodoxy. She says she feels like a girl. I said what does a girl feel like? You are [name].

I feel like I have opened my mouth and said heresy to her. She had her lost and crestfallen face. I feel so mean and out of step with the world, but people are people. When did I start inhabiting this place where you have to be a girl or boy, not just a child?

I'm listening to this now and I'm quite disgusted. Kids are quite honest about mirroring back what society is telling them. This is why girls think they're boys, because we all know that femininity is a prison for girls and the only way to attempt to escape a life of submission and pain, girls will say they're really boys. They know the world opens up to them if they rid themselves of femininity. They might not be able to verbalize all the political and social implications but they say 'THIS FEELS WRONG.'

Yes! Femininity is a prison and 'IT FEELS WRONG.'

She wants to freely participate as a full human being and her teacher didn't take HER seriously when she wanted to try out for a 'boys part' in a play. Once you close off an avenue to a girl based on the fact she's a girl, you create more bars in that prison.

This little girl is rebelling against gender, not against her biology.

This is clear when she describes how she doesn't hate her body but she does hate what her body MEANS in society. She already knows at 10 yrs old that her growing breasts are going to be sexualized. That's why she talked about the fact that in a few years she 'wont' be able to get away with' wearing a sports shirt.

The reason she wants a 'middle body' is because she doesn't want to be hypersexualized. She knows that the moment her breasts grow that she will never be allowed to simply be human. She'll be hypersexualized and preyed upon by half the population. That's fucking scary as hell.

i just feel sad that this is the world she is growing up in; that I so fundamentally disagree with what she is being taught because she needs to make up her own mind. But it is so historically and culturally situated, and I see it as harmful. People are people.

Why is it ok to ask a ten year old if they are a boy or a girl every morning and if they are gay or not.
