I'm fed up with being told hairy is bad.

So after another day of heat where I can't wear shorts because of my leg hair I just wanted to see if anyone else was either fed up with being told that "no hair is beautiful" or ashamed to go out with hairy legs because they feel it's disgusting? I'm so effing hot I just want to be able to be hairy and not be judged!!!!! I can't shave because it brings me out in a bloody rash instantly and only lasts a day, so I wax. That lasts a week max. I wish I could just be a hairy lady and not care but I do care. Didn't know where to post so sorry if this is wrong for feminist chat.

Amber I suppose if I was in a play I might consider shaving the leg that was facing the audience . ..

GhettoFabulous · 31/08/2016 20:59

I have all my body and I can assure you, I'm not short of admirers. Hair is such an underrated, sensual pleasure.

GhettoFabulous · 31/08/2016 21:00

Body hair. And all my body.

2kids2dogsnosense · 01/09/2016 14:26

Ghetto

Me too. We should all be celebrating our sensuous bodies instead of shaving, plucking, and distorting them.

OlennasWimple · 01/09/2016 16:45

Who is telling you that you can't go out wearing shorts? I mean specifically, not the wider societal pressures?

VilootShesCute · 01/09/2016 17:27

Nobody really. Just the shocked look my dh gives me when he sees the hair!

I decided in the last few months to completely stop shaving my legs. I've never enjoyed it. It was never something I chose to do. I only did it because I felt like I had no choice, that I had to conform and fit in.

I had to start shaving my legs at about 12, as I am so hairy. I never wanted to start. Being forced to wear shorts in PE at school while already being self conscious was awful, and other kids did make comments. So I had no choice, I had to conform.

It's caused me a lot of self loathing and shame, if I'm honest. I hated my hairy legs. I hated that I would get awful shaving rashes. I hated that I couldn't just decide to wear shorts on a hot day - not a chance if I hadn't shaved that day. And then there's the agony of a sudden breeze triggering goosebumps on shaven legs, all the painful stubbly regrowth... sigh.

So I decided enough was enough. I'm 29 and finally I've decided I don't care if I don't conform anymore. I fucking hate the idea that women need to modify their natural bodies to appease the desires of men.

True story. I got offered a job based on the fact that I turned up for the interview (summer time)suitably dressed but with impressively unshaven legs. It was a toss up between me and another woman. And the hairy legs won it. It was the early 80s and I was a heavy duty rad fem. (And it was the ILEA.)
Am horrified by all these stories of no pubes. They're there for a purpose.
Have never shaved my pits on principle. Legs did eventually get pulled into a summer routine though.

That's an appalling way to choose one employee over another.

OneFlewOverTheDodosNest · 02/09/2016 16:27

I shaved my legs, underarms and arms from as soon as I hit puberty because all the women in my family like to enforce standards of conformity and, seeing as I'm really rather hairy this involved having to shave my legs every bloody day otherwise I'd be called out on it. Yes, seriously. I genuinely believed that having body hair was dirty, it was pretty much stamped into me so I totally get where you're coming from.

However since I've moved away and embraced laziness I've realised that the vast majority of sane people don't even notice if you've got hairy legs. I commented to DP the other day that I was starting to look like a gorilla leg-wise and he pointed out that even at my hairiest, I wasn't as hairy as 99% of men and they all still wear shorts.

SoHairyAndForeverSpartacus · 02/09/2016 19:10

I could post a picture of mine.. but.. well.. they're very hairy.

CatThiefKeith · 02/09/2016 19:19

I look like I'm wearing mohair cycling shorts ATM, I really am that hairy. In winter it's more like leggings.

If I shave them it grows back within a day or two. I have knees like desperate Dans chin.

I care not, and dh has long since gotten used to it. I think it's time for a hairy revolution personally.

EvansAndThePrince · 02/09/2016 19:34

I just wanted to pop in and say my DH and I were watching that Naked Attraction thing the other day (yeah, I know, it's vile) and a woman with proper pubic hair AND underarm hair was on it. I tentatively asked what he thought (of the underarm hair, I've plenty pubic hair) and he said "I LOVE it!!!"

Never have I been more chuffed in my choice of husband Grin

SoHairyAndForeverSpartacus · 02/09/2016 19:41

I would love to be part of a hairy revolution!

roseteapot101 · 02/09/2016 19:50

to be honest when i dont feel like shaving i just wear a maxi dress no one notices lol Even of the bottom part of your leg showing no one notices

i used to get a rash after shaving but i learnt a good combo shave with mens shaving cream and moisturise with aveeno afterwords

TwoLeftSocks · 02/09/2016 21:42

I was thinking just the other day of having a hairy leg winter, just couldn't be arsed the other day. Maybe longer. Armpits I'll see about.

OP, you're not disgusting at all. It's just hair.

Love the Hairy Legs Club link!

Do as you want. No one should be looking that closely at your legs to notice. Sometimes I shave, sometimes I don't. I have quite dark hairs on my legs and would feel comfortable going out with that level of hair on my legs as in your photo. It's obvious it's just a bit of regrowth.
The only time it's likely to be commented on is among friends. Nicely . As in discussing what we do and what we're comfortable with.
