Interview with another journalist about Janet Yellen (Head of Federal Reserve in US). Journalist says 'Janet Yellen is our warmest auntie, she gives us tea and cookies and tells us everything will be alright.' Am I mistaken in thinking no one would say a similar thing about a man in such a powerful position??? WTF?!

Merkel is referred to as Mutti by some.

Crap, innit?!

Puffinity · 30/05/2016 15:56

Rather! Tbf, they just (listening on iplayer) had a female scientist talking about a test that can be done by anyone who can cook - 'So that rules out half of all men, haha'. John Humphreys commented that that was sexist though.

Iirc Merkel has courted the idea of her being Germany's Mutti, in the same way as Thatcher courted the idea of her being a "good wife" balancing the household budget.

Violet it's discouraging how many women condone/ encourage sexism... I've lodged an official complaint. I feel like I'm being fussy but I'm not, right?

Traditionally parental names for powerful men seem to be reserved for dictators - "Dear Father", "Uncle", etc.
