Grayson Perry article on masculinity

Contrary to a lot of what I have recently read online about gender identity, I found this article about Grayson Perry and his new TV series to be saying some really useful things about gender.

I like what he says about gender identity, and about feminism. I wondered what other people thought?

Ah, I do like GP. Interesting stuff.

I like him a lot. His programme about class was wonderful. He was so empathetic with the participants.

His interview in the Times the other weekend was great. I particularly liked that he was open about cross dressing being a sexual fetish for him, rather than claiming any insight into what it means to be a woman because he's worn a dress from time to time.

Just got half way through that article and had to check for a thread on it. Really pleased to see his comments on toilets and how identity is co-created. Feel like he gets how this issue might actually affect women and that putting on a dress does not make you a woman.

I think his wife is a psychotherapist.

I would love to be at a dinner party with both of them. I bet they have such stimulating and thoughtful conversations about all sorts of psychological and sociological issues.

I really admire GP and have also very much enjoyed his writing and documentaries.

What did pp think of his 3 docs on masculinity? I thought they were insightful and moving if rather depressing!

I missed the third one last week and watched it on catch-up last night. As a crossdresser myself, I suppose I could be viewed as being somewhat biased, but my wife and I both agreed that this series really does highlight the stresses that todays men are often going through. Yes, we are historically the "hunter gatherers", but the world has changed so much and that's the point that so many men seem to not grasp. They see the only that to be a man means that they must be tough and better than everyone else.

Like Grayson, I consider myself to be quiet a masculine guy and a good husband. The fact that I also enjoy wearing makeup and dresses doesn't, in my opinion, detract from that. I find it enjoyable, relaxing, and (most importantly) totally harmless if done in an open and honest way.
