Any suggestions for a feminist, or at least, not completely gender stereotyped so no bloody Disney princesses story book? Suitable for ages say 3-6?

No unfortunately. Hopefully someone else will. I had a complete brain fart and couldn't remember fire fighter (rather than fireman) whilst reading with my son. It'd be nice if the books did this for me.

I think there's quite a good list on a site called A Mighty Girl?

Books for reading aloud (more the older end of your age range) are easy:
Anna Hibiscus
Katie Morag (bit younger as lots of pictures)
The Sophie books by Dick King Smith
IIRC both My Naughty Little Sister and Clever Polly and the Stupid Wolf though old are fine from a feminist POV
The first Little House book is a great read, Laura is a fantastic character and it's interesting to discuss what life was like that far back (others unsuitable for age range not gender stereotyping!)
Sure there's loads more that'll come to mind if I have a think.

At the younger end, the Little Bear books by Martin Waddell are rather sweet - as far as I could tell, they're about a young bear being brought up by a single father. There's a nice one where they tidy their cave together (You and Me, Little Bear, perhaps?)

The Paperbag Princess has a wonderful message and is good for that age range:

Joan Aiken, Arabel and Mortimer series

Michael Bond, Olga da Polga series? (Even though it is about a guinea pig...)

Beverly Cleary, the Ramona books?

YY to pipi longstocking - my DD loved those books. There's Zog too, that's good. I took a lot of ideas from A Mighty Girl too so second the suggestion.

Hi Broken We had a good thread over on Children's Books recently asking the same question and there were some great suggestions.

Broken1Girl · 22/02/2016 20:12

Lots of good suggestions, thanks everyone! Smile
