Not allowed to be a "miss"

Blue14 · 10/01/2016 08:35

"Miss" is my preferred title, I hate "Ms" as being single is a very important part of my identity which I want reflected in my name.

However, there are many situations when I am denied the right to use the title "Miss", for example on my credit card, and on my work ID.

This makes me angry, but I am particularly angry now, having just read on another thread that should a MALE which to be called "Miss", it would be illegal to refuse permission, in NY at least, although I suspect many other places would also take that view.

Angry

I also work in a school and am a 'Miss'.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 10/01/2016 19:28

My son's school (U.K he left 7 years ago ) had Mrs and Mr and Miss and Dr and Ms as the staff titles.

I have never heard of a UK school insisting all its female teachers had to be only one of those options.

JassyRadlett · 10/01/2016 19:30

I have never worked in a place where our work badges or business cards had titles on them. And I've been working a long time

When I was working in a government department they switched ID card systems and suddenly I found myself as Miss J Radlett on my new pass. I called them to let them know they'd given me a title I'd never used while working there. They changed it to Jassy Radlett at my request, after I pointed out that my marital status was utterly irrelevant to my work. No one ever used titles at work, so it was pointless having them on passes anyway.

Blue14 · 10/01/2016 19:34

I wasn't saying schools don't use "miss" I was saying my school doesn't. I was saying that schools do use titles, in response to a poster who said titles are not used anywhere she has ever worked.

The reasons they've given you for not using Miss is nonsense though. Get onto whoever is responsible for SIMS admin and insist on them changing it whilst you're there watching.

Blue14 · 10/01/2016 19:37

I think it is a commercial package, bought as a whole, Culture, you can't change things on it.

OP posts:
CultureSucksDownWords · 10/01/2016 19:41

I know SIMS very well, it can store whatever the admin decides and it stores titles like Miss Mrs etc without any issues. It's a very sophisticated database system. Don't accept a brush off answer from your IT/SIMS admin person/people.

Blue14 · 10/01/2016 19:41

do you know this one? It is called progresso. can this one be changed?

OP posts:
LilacSpunkMonkey · 10/01/2016 19:42

My school work on Progresso.

You can definitely change details like titles on there. We had a staff member get married over the summer. Changed from Miss to Mrs no problem.

PalmerViolet · 10/01/2016 19:43

So, the Mountain Warehouse thing shown to be bollocks.

You could change your credit card, there's loads of them about, every single other one ever in the world will allow you to have whatever title you choose, or none on them, but you'd prefer to kvetch about this one.

And your contention that your school is the only one in Christendom that won't allow you to call yourself Miss?

Really OP? Do you think we all just came down the Trent in a teacup?

Nice try, 0/10 for achievement.

Hulababy · 10/01/2016 19:46

Miss, Ms and Mrs are all viable options on SIMS. We have all three used, in addition to Mr, on our SIMS at school.

LilacSpunkMonkey · 10/01/2016 19:47

Bloody he'll, OP, don't get deleted.

Then you'll be the fifth person you know in real life to have been banned from here for trolling!

What are the odds?

Katenka · 10/01/2016 19:52

I had a Vanquis card with miss on. Didn't have to prove anything.

Not even sure why we need titles at all anyway

EBearhug · 10/01/2016 19:52

You can definitely change details like titles on there.

Maybe there's a school policy that all men are Mr and all women are Ms, because they think whether or not you're living with someone (whether married or not) is completely irrelevant to whether you can teach or not.

Most of the people I deal with, including the bank and work, it's completely irrelevant whether I'm single or not - it's not like they should be treating me any differently.

Blue14 · 10/01/2016 19:54

How is mountain warehouse shown to be "bollocks?"

Actually, the card I was thinking of was cotswold outdoor, where I was refused the title "Miss" last week,(apologies) but I'm pretty sure mountain warehouse refused too.

Changing credit card isn't easy with a poor credit rating

And no, it is not the only school that refuses " Miss" on the ID, many do! including the last few that I have been involved with.

But if you think Progresso can be changed, I will go back and ask again, although i fully expect to get shouted at, told off then ignored.

CultureSucksDownWords · 10/01/2016 20:05

EBearhug maybe if that's the case they should be clear and tell the OP, rather than lie and say the database can't do it.

SenecaFalls · 10/01/2016 20:06

Seneca, you probably don't work in a school

This is true, I don't.

BlueBlueBelles · 10/01/2016 20:07

I would argue your SIMS system. I work in a school, and an interfering ex. Hr assistant changed my title from Ms to Miss and I blew flames at her and got it changed back.

I am most definitely a Ms. I've been married, and divorced. I am not a Miss or a Mrs.

Drquin · 10/01/2016 20:21

You wouldn't have been impressed with my purchase from a home furnishings website yesterday ...... Two title options only, Mr or Mrs .......

Maybe young / single / unmarried women aren't supposed to buy cushions?

EBearhug · 10/01/2016 23:07

Maybe young / single / unmarried women aren't supposed to buy cushions?

Or, they could just use Ms, because that's valid for all women.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 10/01/2016 23:24

The problem is the fact the UK refuses to have one title for grown up women.

I've noticed when booking concert tickets on Dutch , French and Belgian sites they default to calling me Mrs as they don't have the concept of Miss, Ms or Mrs and Mrs is their best shot of translating their one size fits all.

ChristineDePisan · 13/01/2016 00:52

The NHS seems to be unable to correct me from Miss to Mrs on my records - I got them updated when I got married and changed my surname, but I have given up trying to get my title corrected...just too much else to do....
