Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

women's issues, always remember men are victims too

Just frustrated with reading /hearing that men are victims too. Some people seem to only allow permission for issues like advice for 'women suffering from domestic violence' to be discussed if a prominent statement that men are also victims of domestic violence is made. It's infuriating, not because it's not true but because it's so pervasive - you can't write a blog giving specific advice for women in dv relationships without someone commenting, seemingly every time, that men are victims too. Also happens in discussions about rape.

Anyone else find this a common occurrence, I don't know the stats but the fact that men are victims too seems to occur more frequently in the discussions than the instances of men actually being the victim of the scenario? Does it irritate you?

Do you have a stock resort to help bring the conversation back to women without denying or disregarding that yes, bad things happen to men too?

I think I heard that medical wisdom now is that a prostate check is hardly worth doing, as it's not reliable and prostate cancer isn't very dangerous, being a slow-moving cancer that mostly affects elderly men. Whereas breast cancer is a killer, at a much earlier stage of life.

But I did know a man who got prostate cancer at the age of about 40, and it was a fast-moving case that killed him in less than a year. Apparently that was unusual.

gaedoutr · 18/12/2015 00:48

"prostate cancer isn't very dangerous"

UK deaths from prostate cancer in 2012: 10,837

UK deaths from breast cancer in 2012: 11,643 female + 73 male

source: cancerresearchuk.org

yeah, prostate cancer isn't dangerous at all. A feminist said so. Let's cut even more prostate funding shall we?

gaedoutr · 18/12/2015 00:49

"men do have breasts and can get breast cancer"

In 2012 there were only 73 male deaths compared with 11,643 female deaths. And it would be interesting to see how many of those men had dabbled in anabolic steroids (steroids can and do cause breast cancer in men).

Long story short if you are a guy who doesn't use steroids then breast cancer shouldn't be much of a worry.

"Shallishanti Thu 17-Dec-15 23:35:13
am also sure I do not have a prostate"

Translation: "prostate cancer can't affect me! Therefore I don't give a shit about it!"

PeasOnEarth · 18/12/2015 03:15

PAQueen was that some clever play on prostrate? The only thing prostrate about me is in bed at the end of a tiring day.

There is NO evidence that prostate screening (DRE plus PSA) translates into saved lives in protate cancer. Sadly it's a very emotive subject and everyone knows someone who's life was saved by screening/wasn't saved by the absence of screening.

Interestingly, breast cancer screening doesn't produce a reduction in deaths - it produces earlier diagnosis. The stats are complicated as is the sociology that would prevent stopping the national screening programme.

I'll look for stats if wanted.
Sorry for the derail just wanted to correct a few misconceptions.

We are interested in breast cancer, we're fucking sick scum?

Remind me, why did I start this thread again? Confused

Gaedoutr, you seem to have spent all night putting angry comments on any thread vaguely related to feminism.

Hmm
larrygrylls · 18/12/2015 06:38

Prostate cancer is serious yet it tends to affect older men and, on average, be less aggressive than breast cancer. Both need research but breast cancer does tend to blight more families and is thus a higher priority.

AyeAmarok · 18/12/2015 07:12

gaedoutr, interesting night you've had, indeed.

MotherofFlagons · 18/12/2015 08:20

To clarify my post about the race for life and breast/prostate cancer, the reason there were accusations of sexism and anger about it was because it was perceived as yet another thing for women and therefore exclusive of men. Rates of breast cancer vs prostate cancer didn't come into it.

NeverEverAnythingEver · 18/12/2015 10:42

OP reminds me of something I read somewhere about all this whataboutery: "Do you go to donkey sanctuaries and shout about cats too?"

Grin at "My DP complained about lack of support for men's charities and then admitted he primarily gives to animal charities."

I am going to revise my charity donations in the new year ... Time to take stock...

PassiveAgressiveQueen · 18/12/2015 22:01

I was hunting out the stupid links about prostate being a "womens" issue to show someone and i stumbled across all this proper serious stuff that seemed to say we did actually proper have one, but research today revealed the name skenes glands.

BigChocFrenzy · 19/12/2015 00:12

re the original OP about crime, men really do commit the vast majority of serious crime:

Women do however vastly exceed men in convictions for not having TV licences (for those looking for heinous offences committed by women)

BigChocFrenzy · 19/12/2015 00:22

So, looks like male victims are overwhelmingly at risk from, well, male criminals.
Graphics only available for arrests and prosecutions, not convictions; also not this year, but gives the general idea:

women's issues, always remember men are victims too
women's issues, always remember men are victims too
SheldonsSpotOnTheCouch · 19/12/2015 10:59

The 'it happens to boys too' really riles me when it comes to talking about FGM.The two are not the same and not comparable.

I don't believe that a baby boy's foreskin should be removed for non-medical reasons but the impact of the procedure comes nowhere near the impact of female genital mutilation. There are sometimes medical reasons to remove the foreskin-its a legitimate medical procedure. There's nothing legitimate, excusable, necessary or humane about causing a woman lifelong pain and complications by cutting off her clitoris or her labia or sewing the skin up so tightly over her vulva that she can neither urinate nor pass menstrual blood.

Although i don't agree with automatic circumcision I just can't get too outraged about it. And, as with the dv, if men are outraged by it, what's stopping them from starting up a campaign?

HelenaDove · 19/12/2015 17:24

Women also can be reluctant to leave because they know damn well they would be punished with poverty for doing so.

And im betting there is a correlation or link with women who have been sent to prison or fined for not having a tv licence.

PassiveAgressiveQueen · 19/12/2015 17:52

I also can't get very excited about circumcision, i don't recall any stats about men dying in labour due to it.

priagaet · 20/12/2015 12:48

You do know there are different types of female circumcision/FGM? 4 different types and the most common worldwide procedure of these is about as harmful as male circumcision/MGM?

priagaet · 20/12/2015 12:49

" if men are outraged by it, what's stopping them from starting up a campaign?"

haven't you noticed how men (or women) who dare to even mention male issues get shouted abuse as by feminists?

priagaet · 20/12/2015 12:54

"So, looks like male victims are overwhelmingly at risk from, well, male criminals."

And how does that fact console the victims? Does that make the crimes less serious if their attacker is the same gender as themselves?

"We are interested in breast cancer, we're fucking sick scum?"

Just look at you all trying to trivialise and downplay prostate cancer. It has been pointed out prostate cancer kills as many as breast cancer.

And I want to see a valid source for the claim made on this thread that men don't bother getting checked for prostate cancer.

If you want to talk about women's-only issues noone gives a fuck. But you are scum when you try to suggest men's issues should receive even less funding than they already do.

Welcome (back) to Mumsnet, priagaet.
