Murder/rape of elderly woman called "freaky sex game"

www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/woman-aged-91-suffocated-during-6964645

So let me get this straight: a 49 year old man enters his neighbor's apartment, violently violates her and chokes her to death, and the press giggles and calls it a "sex game." This man abandoned a dying or dead woman, and only came forward with his "sex game" story after his DNA was found inside the elderly dead woman.

Now it's being passed around as a funny viral story. Violence against women is trivialized, laughed at, made a "game". The next abusive husband to kill his wife will love to know that this is an excuse now: just stick a dildo in her--when the police find her like that, they'll know she was just some strumpet who wanted it rough and it got "taken a little too far."

It's a ghastly story and that report is disgraceful. However, it reminds me of the very similar case in the UK recently where a man was convicted of murdering a neighbour after assaulting her with a shampoo bottle (very disturbing reading in the link) www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2015/jul/29/majella-lynch-man-guilty-murder-perverted-sexual-assault

It may well be that a different story emerges once he stands trial.

Disgusting.

They do this all the time.

If you look at how often something is called "sex scandal" when it is actually about rape ... absolutely disgusting.

Also, the ever-popular "family drama" (= man kills (ex-)wife and children) instead of calling it murder.

I wonder what would happen if a newspaper completely refused to trivialize violence against women. It would probably soon be reviled as "man-hating" for writing the truth.

There was a story last week about a "glamorous Russian MP" who died while having a "sex romp" with her husband in the back of the car. I had to read to the end of the article to find out that it is believed they were estranged, she was seeing someone else, her ex got her into the car where he raped and murdered her.

These poor women. Their families and friends, seeing THIS as their legacy after being sexually violated by men until their deaths...it just staggers me. It seems like something out of the 19th century.

Agree the way sex crimes are reported is appalling. Trivialised and often written in a titilatijng way. The media seem to salivate over these stories, totally obfuscating the true horror of them for the woman involved. Appalling.

That is frankly one of the most shocking items of "journalism" I have ever read. I feel very angry indeed.

Well the Guardian story about the UK case contains the words "murder" "assault" and "attack". The Mirror reporting on the Portuguese case is horrible. I knows it's a rag but I have never seen worse. No substantiation whatsoever -just "it is believed that" it was a game gone wrong. Believed by whom??? How about waiting for the court verdict?? So she was the widow of sailor and liked a joke. What relevance does that have? There was no sign of forced entry to the house - who keeps their door locked at all times? Who wouldn't open their door to a neighbour that they knew? I sincerely hope that if I'm ever found dead of asphyxiation with sexual injuries, the cops will be launching a thorough murder investigation and that the papers will report it as such instead of printing a load of speculative bullshit. I know that sex games go wrong and it's very sad, but the media shouldn't speculate about it till the coroner's report is published and any relevant criminal verdicts have been reached. I know it'll be a cold day in hell before that happens, but this particular article is shit offensive journalism in the extreme.

I think it would be very likely that a neighbour of a 91 year old who did odd jobs for her would be a key holder.

I just can't believe that anyone can hear about a 91 year old woman being found dead after sexual activity which the man arrested tries to pass off as a sex game and thought "ooh this is the fun piece of news we were waiting for"

Honestly, a man KILLS a very elderly, probably very vulnerable woman, and it doesn't even cross your mind to question it when he says it was "all a bit of fun gone wrong"? And then to publish this utter trash is so painfully offensive to the memory of the woman.

What the hell is wrong with the world? It makes me want to go live in a cave, I swear...

Who the fuck writes these things?!

Says at the top: ED MALYON Deputy Sports Editor
and GERARD COUZENS.

Dear Gerard seems to be attached to various stories from Spain/Portugal/Mexico.

Whilst Ed is the Sports Ed (well, only Deputy).

I know nothing about journalism, but possibly Dear Gerard skims the foreign press, does a quick translate job, and bungs it in the Mirror. I presume The Mirror is probably not full of reporters with extensive foreign skills, so they perhaps just take it on trust that the reports from the portuguese newspaper are correct?

A quick search and auto-translate gave me the story in the actual portuguese newspaper:

www.jn.pt/PaginaInicial/Justica/interior.aspx?content_id=4914894

which describes her as 'a homicide victim'. Right at the top. I presume the translation of 'vítima de homicídio' is fairly sound...........

Auto-translate is always a bit dodgy, but suggests police thought it was possibly murder anyway, and arrested the ex-neighbour after autopsy (suffocation), and DNA tests. I assume because they needed to wait to know HOW she died (i.e. not just old age or a heart attack), and WHO exactly was there at the time.

The Mirror story isn't LIES, as such, just tweak the translation and miss a few bits out, and put the unique Mirror spin on it to get 'kinky old lady dies in tragic sex game', rather than ' old lady assaulted and killed by ex-neighbour'.

One of the significant bits missed out was the neighbour who found her who said:
'...to me, she died alone due to bleeding', says Ana Martins.
Of course, THAT fact (that there was enough blood for the first person on the scene to come to that conclusion) doesn't fit with the 'kinky sex-game suffocation' spin.

So I think now it is pretty clear exactly WHO found the story, and who approved the typical Mirror version acceptable to their sports fans.
But looks like the portuguese police are doing a proper job.

It really is the Mirror doing this on purpose (not that I had any doubt, but always nice to find the facts behind the actual case).

Me too. Extensive genital injury is not "sex game gone wrong" FFS.

Report
BriarRainbowshimmer · 09/12/2015 18:29

It's so deeply disrespectful and offensive towards the victims and their families.
What's the mentality and motivation behind this angle? Wanting to hide male violence against women?

Report
Elendon · 09/12/2015 18:33

It's murder pure and simple, as is a sex game 'gone wrong' no matter what the age. It's appalling to think of it in any other terms really.

OneMoreCasualty · 09/12/2015 18:41

Simply to use the word sex in a headline, briar.
