Group of us out for drinks on Friday. Bit of a mixed bag.

One of the group (who I had not met before) talking about the company she has recently joined...

"It's going okay but the big problem is that senior management are mostly women in their 30s with kids who are all about work/life balance. They're just not as committed"

The company she has joined btw is very very successful and - not that she was to know - but I know the woman who set it up. She works 4 days a week, has two kids and company is now a multimillion pound business.

Gobsmacked at the time and now just incredibly fucked off by this woman's attitude... but not actually surprised either.

Has anyone else encountered this?

(And this woman was being an arsehole, right? Wish I had waded in tbh).

I think I would have asked why she thought they weren't as committed. And then I'd have probably asked her if she'd heard the R4 programme about work last week.

I'd suggest you relay her concerns to her management team. So she can get the sack and I can take her job

But seriously, the fact that they have these wonderful ethics and are still doing so well?!? Proves it can be done. Corporate [Britain] needs to see more of these success stories, not fewer.

The Radio 4 programme to which I am referring is The Joy of 9 - 5 - the first of three episodes was on last Wednesday morning and is on iPlayer. This one was mostly about how after so many hours, your productivity doesn't increase, quite the opposite, and also how some people who go part time can be more productive because they're more focussed. I keep meaning to listen again because I did miss a few bits.

She sounds like every other "go getter" that makes those of us that want a work/life balance look like we're not as "committed" to our jobs as they are...

I work to live, I don't live to work. She'll do the same one day, when she matures....

Presumably your acquaintance doesn't have kids then?

Sounds to me like she was just trying to impress strangers with how ambitious/successful she is. I would put it down to insecurity and nothing more.
