Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Have we discussed the James Rhodes case?

here

It's probably not in the right place in Feminism chat as I can't immediately see a feminist angle but you are all clever so the right people to discuss this with. I absolutely cannot get my head around this case or why it was allowed to go so far through the courts. What was his wife thinking? What could possibly have been the basis for this case as it strikes me as outrageous that she should even have tried. Am I missing something?

Cheeky, I am sorry that happened to you Flowers

As I said upthread, I think the law is clear on this point but I do have sympathy with the mother who will bear the main brunt of supporting her son through this with school friends, neighbours etc also being aware and perhaps not giving the sympathetic and supportive reactions that would be desirable.

CheekyMaleekey · 22/11/2015 19:21

...also the fact that he'd attempted suicide with post-traumatic stress disorder was already public knowledge.

OneMoreCasualty · 22/11/2015 19:22

In this instance, the principle of free speech, with which I agree, will probably make it harder for his son; principles often do hurt people and that doesn't mean they shouldn't be followed, but I can see why the mother had a different priority.

Thanks OneMoreCasualty, but I'm fine. I think reading Instrumental helped in a weird way.

CheekyMaleekey · 22/11/2015 19:24

We mustn't forget that Rhodes has done nothing that his son could be ashamed of.

OneMoreCasualty · 22/11/2015 19:45

Cheeky, I absolutely agree re shame.

I think it would be hard to read about your parent going through any kind of traumatic experience as a child - beatings, witnessing a murder, rape as happened here etc - and to know that others knew that too so you couldn't keep it to yourself/between you and your parents.

I always read MaryZ and Worra's posts with interest but I hadn't made a study of where they post before I posted. That would be a bit odd tbh. I just posted for some reflections from whoever wanted to comment.

I seem to have accidentally kicked a hornets nest of nonsense about whether FC look down on other boards or other boards refuse to go on FC - all of which has entirely past me by, thank god.

I like almost all of MN - that's why I'm here. End of story.

I've not read the book, only some excerpts, and they make very painful reading. But then it was and probably still is a painful experience. Sad Sad He should be able to tell it.

And OPs should be able to post anywhere they like.

Preminstreltension · 23/11/2015 13:09

Sorry, should be "passed me by".

There are many clever people on MN and I am not one of them Grin
