Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

A feminist view on the hack

I was just reading the fb comments (yes I know, someday I'll learn) below the ITV News article about the hack and the swatting shite, which was fronted by a photo of MNJustine.

There was precisely one sympathetic remark - from a woman. Otherwise, men are suggesting that getting hacked is our own fault for being a website that is all about slagging off men; women say we're all boring and up ourselves anyway ("airy fairy women with personality disorders"); and most-liked of all is a man's comment saying "Christ, [Justine] looks just like how I'd imagine the typical wet blanket mumsnet user to look".

People really do hate women for having the nerve to get together and have opinions about things, don't they?

I absolutely do wonder what these swivel-eyed loons think feminism is. Well I know - they think it's like the parody. It's like "I've heard it's about man-hating lesbians who want to ban all men or at least have us castrated" and can't be bothered to think any further.

CoteDAzur · 19/08/2015 16:34

"By "mothers" you mean "women who hate men and probably don't have children"

Probably? Hmm

Have you done a survey of MNers and established that the majority does not and never have had children? I doubt that very much. More likely, you have pulled that our of your arse.

I assume it's male genital mutilation, because male circumcision is just as bad (worse?) than FGM and we should all immediately divert our energies to that instead.

One does wonder whether he is lobbying the government to make FGM legal in the UK / globally, or working to male circumcision illegal in the UK / globally. I suspect we will not get an answer on his activism. Or maybe he thinks one should be legal and one illegal, as at the moment, but the other way around.

Oh and those of us with male relatives want them all to die of prostate cancer, and we sacrifice our male babies at dawn when the moon is full. And drink their blood? Yes that's a nice touch. I expect we circumcise them first as well.

CoteDAzur · 19/08/2015 16:35

Oops. Xennara went bye-bye rather quickly.

Keepithidden · 19/08/2015 16:36

I have a son, he's likely to be an oppressor whether he likes it or not, just like me. I have no problem with being viewed as a potential rapist after reading stuff on MN for years. I'd like him to have similar views.

Non of this is misandry, it's reality. That's not to say I don't object to it on a personal level, just on a class level it is accurate.

BertrandRussell · 19/08/2015 16:36

MGM is male genital mutilation. MRAs think there is no difference in trauma and long term after effects between infant circumcision of males and FGM.

I think you're being very disingenuous there.

Mumsnet (as I'm sure you know) has quite a bad reputation for misandry. Some of it is deserved and some of it isn't.

Personally I think it's got much better over the years, and on the whole a lot less biased/sexist.

But mud sticks and the odd few really misandric posts, don't help to change the bad reputation.

Shame. I liked xennara - he was feisty. [frin]

Treats · 19/08/2015 16:39

Thanks for the explanation Whirlpool.

I shall look out for Xennara's thread so that I can find out more about this issue and what we can all do to help.

My ds is only little and very very cute. I'm hoping to continue raising him to look on women as human beings rather than alien prey.

NoTechnologicalBreakdown · 19/08/2015 16:43

Twunk, yes I was hoping for some fun. Darn.

PausingFlatly · 19/08/2015 16:44

Yy, treats.

If someone starts a thread about prostrate cancer, saying "Here are the symptoms and here's something you can do to help," they'll usually be supported and thanked profusely.

If someone crashes a thread about breast cancer, saying "Why are you talking about breast cancer when men care more about prostrate cancer," they'll be handed their arse.

And quite right too.

NoTechnologicalBreakdown · 19/08/2015 16:50

Though actually I have to make the tea now. We are having broiled baby boy liver with blood gravy actually. The blood in the gravy adds a real zing.

"Mumsnet (as I'm sure you know) has quite a bad reputation for misandry. Some of it is deserved and some of it isn't."

Actually, I don't know that- where is this reputqtion discussed?

Why are MRAs always banned? When not just let them carry on and shoot themselves in the foot? I've never understood that,

Treats · 19/08/2015 16:54

I've always felt that sexist men are generally not that interested in women, and are far more interested in impressing other men with how rich, clever and potent they are. Women really only exist for them as a means to impress other men with their virility.

This is why they quickly get nasty if women reject their advances and also why they ignore, undermine or demean women who try to make an impact in any other sphere.

I think they hate Mumsnet because they hate a) that women are allowed to express those parts of their identities not directly related to sex or motherhood and b) that we might stop trying to get their attention and just chat amongst ourselves instead.

Note: I said SEXIST men. There are plenty of non-sexist men out there who don't think like this.

abbieanders · 19/08/2015 17:08

Could get more aerated about the madey-uppy problem of misandry if, just as an example, misogyny wasn't sending armed police to women's homes for facilitating other women saying stuff.

PuntasticUsername · 19/08/2015 18:42

Worra no, you're wrong, I was not being disingenuous at all. I was unaware that mn "has a reputation for misandry" (like Bertrand, I've never seen it - is it really so well known? Can you point me at any links?) other than knowing that some people are bound to think we all hate men, regardless of the truth of the matter, because clearly when women get together the only thing we WOULD want to talk about is men, of course, what else could there be in life...
