some things

Hello

Some things wot I noticed…

Voting

That voting thread is a classic:
Lots of posts “Oh, I’m voting Green” “So am I”
Two minutes later when some of the Green’s policies are explained
“Oh, I’m not voting Green”

Like a shoal of fish some people –why not find out a party’s policies before declaring you will vote for them?

Don’t feed

17 pages of people not, repeat not at all, getting wound up by Magnetic’s dim postings.

Passive Aggression

Lots of it.
HTH

Freedom of speech

A recent quote: “Freedom of speech is noble, something worth protecting and I’m increasingly pissed off that the principles are being applied to protect twats”
ie I’m all for free speech when I agree with the speaker.

Men

This is the best one.

Massive generalisations about men. Occasionally prefaced with the fig leaf of “Not all men”.

As soon as a person makes a generalisation about Feminists, up comes the cry “We’re not Borg / of a Hive mind” etc.

Still, sometimes folks just need to kick back and laugh. Who cares what Magnetic thinks? It wasn't for his benefit, it was just for fun.

Plenty of threads on MN start off on a bit of a pisstake then wander into chat about cakes. Why not on FWR as well?

AnyFucker · 10/02/2015 00:25

Why is FWR held up to higher standards than anywhere else on MN ?

why is it frowned on to take the piss, wind up the winder, have a laugh about inconsequential things like cakes

it's not some kind of rarefied place where one must be always serious

and tbh, people like magnetic and his ilk have no intention of listening so we might as well spill a load of codswallop because he has decided that is all he will see anyway

Too damn right, AF.

Hazchem · 10/02/2015 09:23

Speaking of cake. How do I go about making the giant jaffa cake? What sort of cake is the cake bit?

ifyourehoppyandyouknowit · 10/02/2015 09:48

I only have cake related wisdom to impart. I did not end up making the cake yesterday, as DS changed his mind and wanted to go kick a ball around. It's basically just an all-in-one sponge cake mix, I think. It's on the MN recipe page.

I did end up buying a two pack of jaffa cakes just to check their cake/biscuit status.

GibberingFlapdoodle · 10/02/2015 10:07

"Why is FWR held up to higher standards than anywhere else on MN ?"

Obviously because it's the best part and everyone else looks up to it, hoping to catch the wisdom as it rains down.

I'm going to make some ginger cake. With drizzly lemon icing on top.

AKnickerfulOfMenace · 10/02/2015 10:09

Is that the nigella one, GF?

GibberingFlapdoodle · 10/02/2015 10:16

Well it's just this one www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/sparklinparkin_14517 but I add the lemon to show how daring I am. Experimental, fun, bubbly, you know the list. So I'm not a proper feminist really.

GibberingFlapdoodle · 10/02/2015 10:22

Maybe if I wear brogues while stirring it and what was the other thing from a while back, [feministcelery]? Maybe a little on top as a decoration.

UptoapointLordCopper · 10/02/2015 10:56

I saw the jaffa cake recipe - that was the first inkling I had that you could actually make jaffa cake and that it's not an element itself.

Any thread that ends up with discussion of cake is a good thread.

BreakingDad77 · 10/02/2015 11:21

I don't see what the problem with the "what men think feminists should be doing" as just about anywhere and hopefully people in general have noticed that on the web where ever there is a womens rights issue / news story it will be trolled by lots of "bu-bu-but wadABout FGM" etc type comments.

LadyBlaBlah · 10/02/2015 15:09

I thought the what men think thread was most excellent.

Wimmin can't be funny though remember. Must only laugh at men.

I hope mn does not make that mistake again. More talk of cooking and cleaning please.

LadyBlaBlah · 10/02/2015 15:10

P.s. What does that OP even mean? Shock

StillLostAtTheStation · 10/02/2015 15:28

It's nothing to do with "wimmin can't be funny" I didn't as it happens find that thread funny , but that's a particular case, not a generalisation.

I am a women. I read and post on this forum. I disliked that thread. I particularly disliked the fact that "cunt" is, for at least one poster, the worst insult available to throw at a man.

Although to be honest I've never really understood why words for male and female genitals are used as insults. It's always seemed a warped idea.

I appreciate of course saying this makes me the wrong sort of woman and why don't I just fuck off back to AIBU.

vesuvia · 10/02/2015 15:30

I've read that women laughing at men is the thing that men fear most about women. I think patriarchy expects women to laugh with men, not at men.

ifyourehoppyandyouknowit · 10/02/2015 15:39

Or it expects women to laugh at other women, with men.

LadyBlaBlah · 10/02/2015 15:39

I do wonder though Lost, why you didn't find some of that thread funny. I get that you don't like the word cunt being used as an insult, I'm personally a bit torn on that, sometimes the context is valid. That was a minor part of the thread.

In general the thread was a very light hearted and good humoured, piss take (with some excellent lines in there) of someone claiming to know what feminism is yet actually having no idea at all.
I really would question why you didn't find any of it funny. And again might assert you are unconsciously
biased to not allow women to lead humour.

We must always laugh at men 's most clever hilarity
(Missed that bit off)

I forgot laboured sarcasm

I would agree it burns through egos like tissue paper.

Yops · 10/02/2015 16:19

I've read that women laughing at men is the thing that men fear most about women.

And yet, isn't making a woman laugh supposed to be a good seduction technique? I fear my wife most when the laughing stops, and it all goes very quiet....

FloraFox · 10/02/2015 17:10

Margaret Atwood said "Men are afraid that women will laugh at them. Women are afraid that men will kill them."

AnyFucker · 10/02/2015 17:17

it's not a Feminist cake unless you have stirred the mixture with the cock of the bloke you removed it from when you didn't take his name on marriage

AnyFucker · 10/02/2015 17:19

Was it Margaret Atwood said that ? Bloody true that.
