Feminist Pub 15: The Bluestocking hangs up its, err, stocking and hopes for a chatty Christmas and a Feminist New Year

Festive greetings!

This is the 15th incarnation of the Pub and is meant as a place to drop by with random thoughts and meandering chats, on feminist or other related themes. Anything you want to mull over but not necessarily start a thread about. Alternatively, get some booze and snacks and hang out! Lurkers, newbies and oldbies welcome.

We have a pub goat, a feminist cannon for firing at crazy sexists and we cheer each other up when patriarchy grinds us down...

Someone who posts on Comment Is Free in the Guardian, I think. They tend to be of the skirt gathering, feminism has gone too far, variety of men.

PoinsettiaGordino · 15/12/2014 07:59

Yes that's right. And many provide comments exemplary of that law about comments below articles on feminism proving the need for feminism

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt though. NACIFersALT etc. and for all I know he could be commenting on book reviews or war in the Middle East

PuffinsAreFictitious · 15/12/2014 08:15

Yup, the CiF comments are only to be read after a stiff drink, and require a bit of a lay down afterwards, because just knowing that that many people hate women that much is frightening.

JeanneDeMontbaston · 15/12/2014 16:46

Oh, yes. CiF. Angry

What pisses me off is the way picking up on people's spelling/grammar seems to be considered a really sophisticated form of argument - I've seen articles about violence or rape where all the comments are mind-numbingly petty arguments along those lines.

PoinsettiaGordino · 15/12/2014 17:03

Ime there are a lot of the sort of left-wing men that SGB describes so well

Monison · 15/12/2014 18:43

Hello! Newbie here. I have been hiding in the shadows for some time but now feel ready for a seasonal rage against Cif. Before venturing into the murky underworld of Cif I had always assumed men buying the guardian were trustworthy, decent sorts. Now I see they are likely to be pompous arses of the highest order. They simply cannot comprehend that their personal experience is not the same thing as a universal experience can they?

Lovely to be here though!

YonicSleighdriver · 15/12/2014 18:52

Hello monison!

Don't forget that CIF is eminently Trollable by DM readers!

Hi Monison!

Yes, I agree. Readers and commenters could be quite different demographics. I suspect most reasonable people look at the comments and think it's not worth getting into conversation with these people.

PuffinsAreFictitious · 15/12/2014 19:04

Hi Monison!

Do excuse the troll....

I agree that a lot of the CiFers do have a stench of DM/UKIP about them.

SoMuchForSubtlety · 15/12/2014 19:18

Hopefully DM readers aren't as organised as the Tea Party in that regard, that would be terrifying!

Monison · 15/12/2014 20:14

Phew! You're right and I feel relieved about the guardian crew even as I despair about the people trawling the Internet for articles about feminism to get frothy about/deny/ derail/patronise. Why oh why oh why....

rosabud · 16/12/2014 01:04

Hello, have not made it into the pub for ages. Please let me stand at the bar and RAIL and RANT against a really annoying man that I work with. Mansplaining and laziness are par for the course but what really really enrages me is that his attention span, when talking to me, is that of a newt. (Sorry to all intelligent, lovely newts out there.) Today I had to wave my hands at his face (literally) to recall his attention mid-conversation as someone else (male) had walked into the room. He looked at me, astonished, and pointed out that my actions (ie the hand-waving) were "childish." I said, I know but I'm short of time and I really need you to concentrate! He regularly breaks off from talking to me if another man (or even a male teenager) enters the room. It drives me wild but I've noticed he does it with other women too. The only women who can engage his attention under such circumstances are attractive women under 30.

OK. Thank you. As you were [smile[

UptoapointLordCopper · 16/12/2014 08:45

Good morning!

Went to a small dull conference thing end of last week and all speakers and chairs are men. Hmm

Last time somebody mentioned an all-women conference a man said it was dull. Hmm Hmm

Hello rosa. How infuriating! I know someone like that. My mate and I used to walk away while his attention was taken up. Grin I bet he thought that was 'childish' too.

upto - how did he know it was dull? Confused

buffy - yay for feeling human. How are you?! I've been failing to take in the pub.

Jeanne Men know everything. Grin It was reported, apparently.

UptoapointLordCopper · 16/12/2014 09:54

I've got a terrible paper to read...

JeanneDeMontbaston · 16/12/2014 09:57

Ah. Silly me. Of course men know everything. Hmm Grin

Mind you, I shouldn't be surprised.

buffy - bleugh. Sorry about that, but glad you are feeling better.

This is off-topic, but I would love to tell you about student evaluations I'm going through atm and, obviously, I can't cos they're confidential. But I can tell you about the response someone else got (after a lecture in Key Concepts): 'it was too much about ideas'. Grin

Grin

That made me really happy. And, impressed you can do the footnotey thing on MN.

PuffinsAreFictitious · 16/12/2014 10:15

Buffy glad you're feeling more human, The Black Death is awful when it hits Grin

Jeanne hopefully all you're getting is lovely supportive comments, however, if you're not try to remember that students are constantly asked to feedback about every tiny little thing, and, if they're like me, end up writing any old garbage just to shut them up Confused

UptoapointLordCopper · 16/12/2014 10:22

We have feedback forms where you tick boxes, and then there's a box where you can write comments. Don't read the comments.

JeanneDeMontbaston · 16/12/2014 10:30

puffins - they are mostly lovely, thanks - and those that aren't are mostly quite funny. I have really, really seriously enjoyed lecturing actually.
