Festive greetings!

This is the 15th incarnation of the Pub and is meant as a place to drop by with random thoughts and meandering chats, on feminist or other related themes. Anything you want to mull over but not necessarily start a thread about. Alternatively, get some booze and snacks and hang out! Lurkers, newbies and oldbies welcome.

We have a pub goat, a feminist cannon for firing at crazy sexists and we cheer each other up when patriarchy grinds us down...

I may just modify my break to no threads but this one. The pub is nice.

Happy new year Jeanne. 2014 brought some pretty big changes for you didn't it? Wonder what excitement 2015 will bring.

I got the women authors thing from SGM two years ago and it was amazing. Suddenly I was racing through books. There is a whole load of stuff you don't realise you were putting up with until you spend some time focused on female authors.

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 31/12/2014 16:11

ooh, cross post with lots of people
Smile

JeanneDeMontbaston · 31/12/2014 16:18

sunshine - if she did, I agree! After all, aren't women constantly being told to take care of everyone else?!

penguins - thanks! I do have a secret 2015 resolution but I'll tell you about it if I pluck up my courage to do it.

Big changes for lots of us this last year.

I do find it incredibly comforting to acknowledge that a lot of men write books that simply don't interest me very much (or actively alienate me). It makes me feel ok just to give up on them and read something else.

ErrolTheDragon · 31/12/2014 16:34

I think 'eating healthily and exercising more' is perfectly feminist - it may improve your perception of your appearance, but being fitter and stronger is also quite literally empowering.

While that is one of my reboot NYRs (did pretty well with it last year!), another is to buy and eat chocolate with no guilt at all. Grin

But also I think I shall try to read more good books- already started that having self-gifted myself Delusions of Gender (at last).

FibonacciSeries · 31/12/2014 16:37

I loved Delusions of Gender.

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 31/12/2014 16:39

Me too. Need to finish MadAddam then might dig it out for a re - read.

DoctorTwo · 31/12/2014 16:54

I haven't made a New Year Resolution for years but this afternoon I decided that I'm too old to drift along and it's time I earned decent money again. Also, I'm going to write every day. Initially longhand in a journal, but once I've saved for a laptop I'll use that. That sounds a bit cryptic, but really it isn't. My job involves split shifts and is about 65 miles from home, so am out the door from around five in the morning to around eight in the evening (usually). I might even resurrect my old long neglected blog.

Happy new year to all the pub goers and the lurkers too. See you all next year. :o

PuffinsAreFictitious · 31/12/2014 17:45

Happy New Year to all.

2014 has been a big year, leaps into the unknown all over the place, 2015 will be one of consolidation and then (hopefully) back into study for me.

Hope you all have a great evening and that the launch into the new year is full of peace, love and light.

Dragonlette · 31/12/2014 17:49

Thank you all for saying eating healthily and exercising more is feminist. The motivations behind it is so that I am not fat by the time I get married, but the health benefits are probably more important long-term.

I think I might join you all in reading women authors, but I don't think that will be much of a challenge because I read mostly women authors anyway, I just prefer them.

AnnieLobeseder · 31/12/2014 20:26

Happy new year Fabulous Feminists! My gift to you this new year is this: finally, a genuine way that women have it better than men - as women scientists, not only can we publish our results, we can also turn them into a fabulous frock to wear when we accept our Nobel prizes!

mimithemindfull · 31/12/2014 21:16

Happy new year all feminists .Looking forward to more lurking and occasional posting on chat and in pub when I'm feeling brave Smile

Happy New Year fabulous people Grin Wine

EilisCitron · 01/01/2015 12:04

Happy new year to you all!

Great resolutions on here. Best of luck with all of them, I am sure you will do well with them and enjoy them.

kickassangel · 01/01/2015 13:24

Happy New Year.

I don't do resolutions, so not much to add.

Has anyone watched The Bletchley Circle? We're watching it on Netflix and I'm loving it. It's 4 women who used to do code breaking at Bletchley during the war who become self appointed private detectives several years later. There's a very strong message about what a waste of their brains it was for them to give up work after the war. It's also reasonably good suspense detective stories.

YonicSleighdriver · 01/01/2015 14:07

No, but sounds great! Have you seen the Imitation Game? Bechdel test fail but treats Joan's character with respect, I think.

I watched The Bletchley Circle and loved it. Performances are really top notch, especially Anna Maxwell Martin.

Happy New Year, everyone!

Ooh, I must watch that. Thank you!

Happy New Year, everyone!

Can you all please remind me that writing 50,000 words in the next few weeks will be really uneasy? I have to prep my Chaucer lectures, and while it is great fun, I keep getting distracted and wanting to write other things!

On the plus side, I get to tell my students Chaucer refers to this fruit as an 'open-arse' and has an old man compare himself to it.

JeanneDeMontbaston · 01/01/2015 16:34

Huh. That was a telling typo. I meant to type 'will be really easy'!

PetulaGordino · 01/01/2015 16:34

Happy new year folks. I have been away from wifi and 3G and my phone couldn't cope with long threads, and I don't think I have any hope of properly catching up with all th recent posts, but hope everyone had good celebrations

Good luck with job application annie! It sounds v exciting

My new year's resolution is not to buy any books - I am only going to read the ones I have queued up as it is out of control

I don't make resolutions about diet or exercise

Most pressing thing is to decide if/how I want to continue studying...

JeanneDeMontbaston · 01/01/2015 16:37

What are the possible options for that, petula?

PetulaGordino · 01/01/2015 16:40

It will be a piece of piss jeanne.

I saw in dp's History today that there is an article on the beginnings of English fiction in the 12th century which looked interesting o a non-expert like me - I haven't read it et though (plus another on sexual violence in war that I need to read)

PetulaGordino · 01/01/2015 16:44

X-post sorry

Options are OU (cheapest and most flexible but also slowest)

See what options there are at the uni I work in (non-academic role) - might not be approved by my line management though as it's not needed for my role, plus I'm new and need to prove myself, plus I'm on a fixed-term contract. They wouldn't pay but I would get a significant discount

Another university perhaps...

I need to talk to admissions tutors in person really

JeanneDeMontbaston · 01/01/2015 16:48

petula - oh, that sounds interesting. It wasn't by Laura Ashe was it?

Good luck with the admissions tutors. It'd be good if they'd discount it!
