Feminist Pub 14: The Bluestocking, a place for feminist chat and feminists to chat

Welcome!

This is the 14th incarnation of the Pub and is meant as a place to drop by with random thoughts and meandering chats, on feminist or other related themes. Anything you want to mull over but not necessarily start a thread about. Alternatively, flop onto the chaise lounges with some Wine

We have a pub goat, a feminist cannon for firing at crazy sexists and a variety of drinks and snacks. And stools/bar counters at female friendly heights. And a crèche in the back somewhere

Will link the last pub in the next post!

My Granny used to say that when you could hold the bowl upside down over your head with confidence the eggs are stiff enough.

Are you making meringues?

Hmm myempire "fuck it that'll do" is my approach to a lot of things but also baking. Sad to say it rarely ends well for the baked goods, although it seems adequate for other areas of my life. Flowers for going on those awful threads too

UptoapointLordCopper · 09/12/2014 21:53

For Christmas cake it probably doesn't matter if it's not stiff enough. It's only when you make meringue, or when the stiff egg white is the sole rising agent that it matters. >

I've never dared to hold the bowl upside down over my head when beating egg whites.

I have been lurking on this thread for a while, but I'm still here

Baking tends to require fairly specific attention to the instructions, but rich fruit cake is fairly forgiving I think. If it looks iffy when it comes out, just keep adding alcohol.

I'm at the end of my rope with parenting and have nothing useful feminist to add, so shall just sit in a corner and sup Wine

UptoapointLordCopper · 09/12/2014 21:59

Parenting is like a box of chocolate ... or something ...

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 09/12/2014 22:01

With added tantrums, forgotten library books and babies who could give the CIA a run for their money in sleep deprivation techniques.

PuffinsAreFictitious · 09/12/2014 22:04

Baking is pretty precise. It's lovely and scientific. And therapeutic.

I'm sure it will be fine MEOD.

Copper, I always do, I also make meringues in the same bowl Granny did, she was a mean meringue maker and it always makes me smile, especially when holding them above my head and hoping for the best.

UptoapointLordCopper · 09/12/2014 22:06

I love baking. Smile

PuffinsAreFictitious · 09/12/2014 22:06

Oh Penguins, is the chick still not sleeping? That's tough. DS2 didn't sleep for longer than 20 minutes at a time. In the end, I made a cocoon around us and curled round him and slept during the day.

Have a lovely Wine

BertieBotts · 09/12/2014 22:08

And tantrums which continue for WAY longer than advertised on the box.

I got screamed at this morning for eating a piece of toast too soon.

UptoapointLordCopper · 09/12/2014 22:12

Penguins Wine

Tantrums. When do they actually stop?

YonicSleighdriver · 09/12/2014 22:15

Sympathy, Bertie. Was the toast also CuttedUp?

PuffinsAreFictitious · 09/12/2014 22:16

They don't. They just turn into prebuescent meltdowns and then morph into teenage strops.

Sorry.

The world is full of chocolate though, which almost makes up for it Grin

UptoapointLordCopper · 09/12/2014 22:17

I was trying to describe to DH this "cuttedup" business and why it's hilarious but I don't think I did it justice ...

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 09/12/2014 22:22

God yes, I miss daytime naps. DD2 knew just how far to push her luck - 2 hourly wakings and a nice 1-2 hour nap with me at the same time dd1 took her nap. DS has pushed it to 30 min wakings at least 3 nights a week (he may stretch to 2 hour stretches on a 'good' night), plus no naps as DD2 is at pre-school mornings only and he conks out on the pick up. I might die.

Tantrums - arghhh! That is all I can say. I want to bang the girls' heads together and shout "it doesn't fucking matter who gets into the bath first". Have I mentioned I may be a little short tempered myself Grin

Baking is very therapeutic. For a cheap hit, making bread in a bread maker is also disproportionately satisfying for 90 seconds of effort.

Flingmoo · 09/12/2014 22:24

sidles up to bar nervously Hi all... first time at the feminist pub - feeling particularly strong in my feminist convictions this week, spurred on by all this horribleness about breastfeeding in the news. Just thought I'd show myself instead of lurking Xmas Smile helps self to Wine
