Feminist Pub 14: The Bluestocking, a place for feminist chat and feminists to chat

Welcome!

This is the 14th incarnation of the Pub and is meant as a place to drop by with random thoughts and meandering chats, on feminist or other related themes. Anything you want to mull over but not necessarily start a thread about. Alternatively, flop onto the chaise lounges with some Wine

We have a pub goat, a feminist cannon for firing at crazy sexists and a variety of drinks and snacks. And stools/bar counters at female friendly heights. And a crèche in the back somewhere

Will link the last pub in the next post!

Happy birthday Puffins! Cake

Yonic - an acquaintance of mine (who is a LGBT campaigner and very active in politics) was bleating about that on FB. Normally he speaks sense and our opinions broadly align, but in this case it was all "wah wah wah I don't care how badly women are treated in porn I don't want the government regulating it". Disappointing.

AnnieLobeseder · 02/12/2014 19:00

This bit particularly puzzled me: "and the measures appear to take aim at female pleasure." Huh? None of the activities listed seemed to be ones that tend to get women's rocks off. Hmm

UptoapointLordCopper · 02/12/2014 19:04

Ooo! A G&T! What a fabulous idea!

yonic Are the Christmas lectures televised? (Couldn't find out from website ... Has anyone else noticed the trend of websites to be prettier and less informative? Hmm)

Lurcio I'm a bit surprised myself how much I've taken to the music. Maybe there's something in this Wagner operas business after all!

Now to prevent another skirmish. "He let me do this!" "No I didn't" "Yes you did" "Yeah but I've changed my mind" "Waaaahhhh!" Hmm

Happy Birthday Puffins! Cake and then Wine for you Grin

PuffinsAreFictitious · 02/12/2014 19:54

December birthdays do indeed rock!

Thanks all, a virtual G&T sounds lovely!

The list of things banned from porn, and the answer that it has removed things women find pleasurable from porn is a leetle weird... I know some women do enjoy some of those things, but really????

SunshineBossaNova · 02/12/2014 20:03

Happy birthday Puffins Cake

Fibonacci I also don't have children. I've not been kicked off here yet. Grin

FrauHelgaMissMarpleandaChuckle · 02/12/2014 20:20

Have any of you seen the thread about the wee girl and the disco and the short skirts not being seemly?

I am so angry I can't post. I would get deleted.

PuffinsAreFictitious · 02/12/2014 20:41

What the actual fuck?

It's probably not ok, especially in light of the recent AIBU pile on about what a bunch of gits we are.

I read the thread. I have a feeling I know which school this is. Nice to see nothing's changed in 20 odd years.

FrauHelgaMissMarpleandaChuckle · 02/12/2014 20:52

i've reported my post

PetulaGordino · 02/12/2014 21:01

Happy birthday puffins!

YonicScrewdriver · 02/12/2014 21:06

LordC, yes they are televised on the BBC. To be fair to the RI, they are probably aiming their website at those who want to bring their kids to the live lecture...

Ooh I'll look forward to those Yonic thanks. I LOVE getting the Christmas issue of the radio times and getting out my highlighter pen!

ChunkyPickle · 03/12/2014 06:17

Gah! They're at it again (this will out me, but if you're on this particular board I really don't mind)

Dad’s Night out – at school A special night for dad’s, granddad’s and male carers only. Men

as fathers and carers often have experiences of child rearing that are compromised by

pressures of work. There are some very special aspects about being the male role model in

the life of a child. We will explore these in manly fashion! Thursday 14th May

Ignoring the Grocer's apostrophes for now, I don't think he's really looked at his market. In the playground at dropoff/pickup there are always a number of dads (and yes, the occasional grandad), and every single mother I regularly converse with is either 'compromised' by the pressures of work (!) or is looking for a job right now.

I might just be being churlish, and that whole pressures of work thing getting to me more than it should though. Sod them and their 'manly fashion' I should send DP charged with derailing it.

UptoapointLordCopper · 03/12/2014 09:57

What does "compromised by the pressure of work" even mean?

Shock Those apostrophes! Put them away before somebody gets hurt!

"compromised by the pressure of work" = cannot take interest in children or any household chore because too busy hunting woolly mammoths for tea while womenfolk sit around fire gossiping?

UptoapointLordCopper · 03/12/2014 10:09

Women are never compromised by the pressure of work because of the following reasons:

  1. The maternal instinct: the superpower that enables you to do every fucking thing.

  2. Multitasking: another superpower exclusive to ones born with vaginas which enables you to do every fucking thing.

  3. Women work? Does not compute. You must be joking. Hahaha. Good joke! Besides even if they do work they are only decorative and never have to lift heavy things. Not proper work, really. Now make me a sandwich.

ChunkyPickle · 03/12/2014 10:10

No idea what those pressures are... I do know that sitting in the car/on the train for an hour on the way to talk to adults all day sounds like a dream compared to my crazy feeding/cleaning/dressing kids, dropoffs, and squeezing in my freelancing around it all.

Which might be why I'm looking for an out of the home job right now. I know that the pressures of work will be less arduous when someone else has sorted out getting them to school and feeding them dinner!
