The song is "Wiggle" By Jason Derulo, with a charming rap by Snoop Dogg.

Lyrics as follows - and please look away now if likely to be offended:

Hey, yo, Jason
Say somethin' to her, Holla at her [Laughs]
I got one question
How do you fit all that... in them jeans? [Laughs]

You know what to do with that big fat butt

[Chorus:]
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle
Just a little bit of... swing

Patty cake, Patty cake
With no hands
Got me in this club making wedding plans
If I take pictures while you do your dance
I can make you famous on Instagram

Hot damn it
Your booty like two planets
Go head, and go ham sandwich
Whoa, I can't stand it

'Cause you know what to do with that big fat butt

[Chorus]

Cadillac, Cadillac, pop that trunk
Let's take a shot
Alley oop that dunk tired of working that 9 to 5
Oh baby let me come and change your life

Hot damn it
Your booty like two planets
Go head, and go ham sandwich
Whoa, I can't stand it

'Cause you know what to do with that big fat butt

[Chorus]

[Snoop Dogg rap:]
Shake what your mama gave you
Misbehave you
I just wanna strip you, dip you, flip you, bubble bathe you
What they do
Taste my rain drops, K boo
Now what you will and what you want and what you may do
Completely separated,
Till I deeply penetrate it
Then I take it out and wipe it off
Eat it, ate it, love it, hate it
Overstated, underrated, everywhere I've been
Can you wiggle, wiggle for the D, O, double G, again?

Etc. (there's some more but that's got most of it covered)

Would you say anything to the school? I have a 6 year old DD. When this song comes on the radio I turn it over as I hate it. She asked me why once so I explained to her that it is two men talking about women's bodies in a not nice way. When the song came on at the disco she got quite upset and asked should they be playing this? I think it is wildly inappropriate and want to challenge it. But am I overthinking it?

Would you mention it to the school?

Would people not care if they were listening to a song that was incredibly racist or homophobic because it might go over the child's head?
Confused

Yy FOG - remember Jeremy Clarkson and his use of the old version of "catch a fishy by his toe" - that would have been turned off sharpish by most, I'm sure!

NotWiggling · 11/11/2014 14:20

FOG and Yonic, my DH made this very point.

A song about mockery and abuse of homosexual or black people, for example, would never even be played on the radio, and no-one would ever dream of playing it at a kids' disco because after all they wouldn't listen to the words would they.

But we should let nasty sexism pass as it's "only a song".

Also, I do not think "black" or "urban" music is inherently sexist. I actually love rap and r&b music. Jason Derulo is really really dire though. This is quite funny on the subject of this song in particular Grin

This is another song that I used to love before I listened properly to the lyrics - still heard quite a lot on the radio, especially the stations that like to play older stuff www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/mungojerry/inthesummertime.html

It's this bit that really gets me:
If her daddy's rich, take her out for a meal
If her daddy's poor, just do what you feel

Misogynistic, classist, undertones of rape, all sorts of things all wrapped up in 2 lines.

SevenZarkSeven · 11/11/2014 21:34

YY thumbwitch that lyric is just grim.

ChoochiWoo · 12/11/2014 08:27

I think the main issue is primary school discos, parents i think will say something if its inaproppriate but secondary is different you cant really take exception at that age, without being overly twee.

TentsAndTiaras · 12/11/2014 09:25

The point I tried to make is that the organisers wouldn't have intended to have offended. So by all means mention it, but don't send a great big negative email. Things like infant discos actually take a lot of organisation, and it's probably organised by the same people running the fete, the Christmas fayre, social events, helping on school trips etc. If you think something could be done better next time, then why not volunteer to help yourself?! Of course they are double meanings, because an adult can interpret the meaning, but a 5 year old would not listen to those word and understand. I am not saying that it is and appropriate song choice for infants because it isn't, and clearly the person playing the music was thoughtless in this regard. Similarly children grow up much quicker now than in our generation, and 5 year olds want something more than nursery rhymes.

LittleBairn · 12/11/2014 13:04

I would have absolutely no issue going up and pulling the damn plug out.
No way would I stand by whilst utter filth was peddled to children.
This is why I banned Radio 1 no way will allow those sort of songs to be played around children. Where girls are nothing but sex objects and cool 'real' man is only a man if he treats her in a degrading manner like she's an object for ownership.

What good is a letter to the HT? All you will get is some head bobbing and a weak sorry all the while the kids present learned those lyrics were endorsed by every adult in the room.

YonicScrewdriver · 12/11/2014 15:17

Harsh, Little - most parents probably weren't listening to much except the catchy chorus. And what she will get is it not being played again and some more thought on the play list going forward.

TwelveLeggedWalk · 12/11/2014 15:36

Thumbwitch I remember singing along to that one. Then the 'Have a drink have a drive' line became totally unacceptable - the line you've picked out never even registered.

Have also got to the end of the thread realising I have no clue what 'Ham Sandwhich' means. Or the real meaning of 'Hit me with your Rhythm Stick.'

80s child, in case there was any doubt Smile

LittleBairn · 12/11/2014 15:52

Yonic it is harsh but it needs to be when adults are playing songs about Anal sex to young children.
