The song is "Wiggle" By Jason Derulo, with a charming rap by Snoop Dogg.

Lyrics as follows - and please look away now if likely to be offended:

Hey, yo, Jason
Say somethin' to her, Holla at her [Laughs]
I got one question
How do you fit all that... in them jeans? [Laughs]

You know what to do with that big fat butt

[Chorus:]
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle
Just a little bit of... swing

Patty cake, Patty cake
With no hands
Got me in this club making wedding plans
If I take pictures while you do your dance
I can make you famous on Instagram

Hot damn it
Your booty like two planets
Go head, and go ham sandwich
Whoa, I can't stand it

'Cause you know what to do with that big fat butt

[Chorus]

Cadillac, Cadillac, pop that trunk
Let's take a shot
Alley oop that dunk tired of working that 9 to 5
Oh baby let me come and change your life

Hot damn it
Your booty like two planets
Go head, and go ham sandwich
Whoa, I can't stand it

'Cause you know what to do with that big fat butt

[Chorus]

[Snoop Dogg rap:]
Shake what your mama gave you
Misbehave you
I just wanna strip you, dip you, flip you, bubble bathe you
What they do
Taste my rain drops, K boo
Now what you will and what you want and what you may do
Completely separated,
Till I deeply penetrate it
Then I take it out and wipe it off
Eat it, ate it, love it, hate it
Overstated, underrated, everywhere I've been
Can you wiggle, wiggle for the D, O, double G, again?

Etc. (there's some more but that's got most of it covered)

Would you say anything to the school? I have a 6 year old DD. When this song comes on the radio I turn it over as I hate it. She asked me why once so I explained to her that it is two men talking about women's bodies in a not nice way. When the song came on at the disco she got quite upset and asked should they be playing this? I think it is wildly inappropriate and want to challenge it. But am I overthinking it?

Would you mention it to the school?

I will let you know what they say, thank you.

Interesting that someone mentioned Boom Boom Boom by the Outhere Brothers. I was 11 and in my last year of primary school when that came out and distinctly remember it at my Leaver's Disco, and my classmates and I jumped around to it with great enthusiasm. I remember there was a big media hoo-ha about them at the time, saying they were inappropriate for children. I thought "but the lyrics were nowhere near as bad", I then just looked them up and it turns out the version I am familiar with is heavily censored, eg the kid friendly version says "put your arms around me girl, and your kisses on my face" or something, but the original says "Put your niney on my tongue And your booty on my face". Massive difference.

If this Jason Derulo song was censored, and the hideous Snoop Dogg bit were cut out completely, I'd let it slide, but if they just played the whole uncensored lyrics at a school disco I'd be quite shocked.

coraltoes · 10/11/2014 12:09

I used to listen to "Girl I wanna make you sweat" on the radio. I had no idea how rude it was at the time. But MY god! Why on earth is it ok to have songs that basically say "you might not want sex or you might not want it a particular way but by gum, this is what I want to do to you, and I'll probably do it anyway"

Fucking sick.

KateeGee · 10/11/2014 12:13

Blimey coral, you're right. I thought "what are you talking about? That's a gentle happy reggae song!" but then thought about it again and you are quite right

coraltoes · 10/11/2014 12:16

Katee I thought it was all "a lalalalalong" but no. Girl I wanna make you sweat, sweat til you can sweat no more, and if you cry out I'm gonna push it some more or orrrrr. Depressing.

HowsTheSerenity · 10/11/2014 12:16

katee Color Me Badd! I thought that song was soooo rude.

What was that song that had the lyrics (think mid 90's) 'I want to lick you up and down....'? Only two songs banned at school dances. Oh and Closer by
NiN Grin

KateeGee · 10/11/2014 12:19

Ha Serenity are you thinking of Freak Me by Silk (later covered by Another Level)? "let me lick you up and dowwwnnnn til you say stop, let me play with your body baby, make you real hot, let me do all the things you want me to do, cause tonight baby, I wanna get freaky with you". Awful, but at least he is pleasuring the lady in that one. It is, however, a crime against music.

MackerelOfFact · 10/11/2014 12:34

I have to admit that I led a group of under-10s in a bit of a boogie to this song at a wedding earlier in the year. I was quite tipsy didn't realise the lyrics were so horrible, the 'wiggle wiggle wiggle' chorus was just catchy and seemed quite sweet for us all to wiggle to. Blush

I know that a lot of songs are quite revolting when you listen to them properly, but there are plenty that aren't - the playlist it quite a major part of school disco so I would hope that someone would've paid slightly more attention.

MackerelOfFact · 10/11/2014 12:36

HowsTheSerenity That was Another Level, I can't remember what it was called. Freak Me? Something like that.

Sex on the Beach and Mousse T's 'Horny' were regular fixtures at my secondary school discos. Confused

NotWiggling · 10/11/2014 12:38

The school have replied and I am happy with their reply. I can't give too many details as really don't want to out anyone, but they have agreed it is inappropriate and a genuine oversight, and that it won't happen again. I am happy with this.

The song was not censored in any way. And it is a really shit song as well.

Inappropriate songs have indeed been round for years. But I think there is a difference between "I wanna make you sweat" and "You know what to do with that big fat butt". And songs about sex are fine (for an adult!), but songs about anal sex whether you're fine with it or not and whether you love it or hate it, are not fine.

Thank you all for a thought-provoking thread.

I'm old enough to remember when Relax was banned from the play list on the top 40.

Anyhow back to modern days. Yes Infant discos is a thing and has been for years. My DC are 16 and 12. At the school my DD's went to they incorporated party games too such as musical statues. Small children are very aware of what is in the charts and would expect to hear their favourite current hit song but the meaning goes over their heads.

Remember LMFAO I'm Sexy And I Know It with the censored video, played all the time at school discos and the DC laughed their heads off.

icanhaveadarksideifyouwantmeto · 10/11/2014 12:49

yoni so where does the anal come in?

YonicScrewdriver · 10/11/2014 15:00

Dark side, the whole song is about a woman's ass! So "penetrate it" refers to penetrating said ass.

Why, how do you read it?

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 10/11/2014 17:03

coraltoes What is your issue with Sweat? How is it depressing?

MollyBdenum · 10/11/2014 18:05

I read the "cry out" in Sweat as referring to orgasm/ pleasure rather than protest, ie he was promising multiple orgasms rather than threatening to fuck her even if she objected.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 10/11/2014 18:14

Me too Molly and it is the most likely too. I find it very sad and actually quite bizarre, how women now instantly jump into thinking anything sexual is about rape.

SevenZarkSeven · 10/11/2014 19:07

lol @ where does the anal come in

the whole song is about him liking some woman's arse
he's going to fuck her up the arse
then pull out wipe off his cock and make her to suck it whether she wants to or not

That's what the lyrics say it's hardly as if people are reading subtext here!

Yes obviously totally inappropriate for an infants disco or a juniors or teen disco for that matter! Glad the school agreed OP Smile

SevenZarkSeven · 10/11/2014 19:09

"Now what you will and what you want and what you may do
Completely separated,
Till I deeply penetrate it
Then I take it out and wipe it off
Eat it, ate it, love it, hate it"

No-one is instantly jumping to anything! It is what the lyrics say. Why on earth anyone would rush to give these lyrics the benefit of the doubt is beyond me Confused

YonicScrewdriver · 10/11/2014 19:12

Molly, I hear Sweat the same as you - but I don't think there's any doubt about the OP's song!

MollyBdenum · 10/11/2014 19:27

I agree about the OP's song.

YonicScrewdriver · 10/11/2014 19:29

redwarf · 11/11/2014 08:45

are black or 'urban' songs inheritantly sexist?

ChoochiWoo · 11/11/2014 11:38

The penetrate bit made me Shock ....and im no prude I grew up on eminem, i think id say something perhaps x

FuckOffGerbil · 11/11/2014 12:45

I'd write a letter, I'd include the entire song as well.

Not surprised by the posts here as unfortunately we live in a sexist world. So it's not a surprise that people think it's OK to allow their children to be exposed to sexist music. Just fucking disappointing that people don't give a fuck.

OP I wouldn;t think you need to reevaluate the way you explain sexism to your daughter either Hmm seemed totally age appropriate to me.

I think some people might want to reevaluate the damage they might be doing to their children by ignoring sexism. What message are you sending your kids?

YonicScrewdriver · 11/11/2014 12:47

"are black or 'urban' songs inheritantly sexist?"

I wouldn't say so - what do
You think?
