Real Ale

Really? Angry

I could weep. It's bad enough being a woman in a predominately male industry without shit like this.

At some industry events women make up approximately 5% of the attendees. If you're lucky. Camra then complain about it. Then they produce this to attract new members

Just me then!

Not just you - I'm a member of CAMRA and that pissed me off too! And I'm typically not massively "feminist" (obviously I have certain feminist views as do most women) but this really got my goat!

The most annoying thing is I get called "butch" etc for drinking ale, yet they plaster pin up girls on an advert for it!

Wellwellwell3holesintheground · 16/10/2014 14:01

Honestly, I talk to so many young, female ale drinkers who are passionate and knowledgeable and who avoid joining CAMRA because of twattery like this. It's just such a waste of money. They've managed to created a campaign that attracts exactly the sort of beer drinkers that are already CAMRA members.

I bought a membership for me and dh years ago (was going to be a present for Christmas). USed my bank account for the DD all my details etc...

Dh gets a letter (with my bank info) addressed to him. Ruined the surprise and massively ignored data protection Angry

Grr, that would have really wound me up. I'm vair cross with them but have to toe the line a bit for business reasons. But I'm increasingly thinking that severing ties with such an outdated sexist organisation might be the way forward.

That's grim. I'm a bit or a real ale fan myself and my dh is a huge craft beer enthusiast but he refuses to join CAMRA because he says they are legendary for being dicks. I'm seeing his point now.

On a related note, I once ordered myself a bottle of ale in a pub and the man behind the bar said 'is it for you?'. I said it was and he said 'oh no, but that's an ale'. I was all Confused and 'yes, I know it's an ale, that's why I ordered it', and he told me that he didn't think I'd like it and that maybe I'd like a Budweiser or a Heineken instead. Hmm

Wellwellwell3holesintheground · 16/10/2014 15:54

Idiot. I find a good retort to things like that is 'I own a brewery' - it's worth the hard work just to confound expectations.

I used to know someone quite high up in Camra and this doesn't surprise me at all Sad

With pubs closing down at a rapid rate you'd think they would be trying to appeal to as many demographics at they could to create a demand for their product and for consumers to seek it out.

Lottapianos · 16/10/2014 16:04

How gross. I'm a real ale fan but not a CAMRA member. DP is though - will show him this and I hope he will be disgusted. What were they thinking of?????

It is still 2014, isn't it? It's just hard to be sure with all the sexist knuckle dragging nonsense that's been around this week.

Indigui · 16/10/2014 16:17

My local CAMRA has an annual beer festival. Traditionally the festival has always been opened by the town mayor. But they decided last year's mayor couldn't perform the duty on account of being a woman.

SevenZarkSeven · 16/10/2014 16:18

I remember a few years back there was a lot in the papers about how women were drinking "real ale" in increasing numbers, and welcoming them with open arms was going to be the key to keeping it all going, and even recently a big article about women going into micro-brewing with success.

Given all that it seems odd they are are apparently setting out to exclude at half of their potential membership.

If I were a member I'd leave. Take that, CAMRA!

Lottapianos · 16/10/2014 16:20

'But they decided last year's mayor couldn't perform the duty on account of being a woman'

Indigui, please be kidding. I beg you. I cannot take it anymore!

BlueberryWafer · 16/10/2014 16:35

The main thing that pisses me off when ordering an ale is the assumption that I will want a half. Pour me a fucking pint, you half wit. There are so many lovely country pubs where I live, you would think they'd be used to a woman ordering ale!

Wellwellwell3holesintheground · 16/10/2014 16:43

Well I find my ovaries can only handle a half at a time...

Having attended many industry exhibtions where women are dancing on podiums, draped over machinery in bikini's and handing out leaflets in hotpants I am really not at all surprised by this.

I don't seem to have an issue with being offered a half instead of a pint. If I ask for a beer generally I get a pint. I used to have issues though and I remember when a pint was off the landlord arguing back with me that it's supposed to be like that and I didn't know what I was talking about.
