You just can't make this shit up!! I wonder how the school introduced her to the children. link: www.laweekly.com/informer/2011/11/11/sasha-grey-reads-to-compton-kids-failing-school-district-embarrasses-itself-again

The worlds gone mad - and porn is very much mainstream.

"I thought part of it was having the freedom to make choices without judgement?"

That's misplaced. There is a whole continuum of choices that one makes in life, and simply because a choice is made by a woman, that does not make it acceptable (legally or ethically). Discussing whether 'free' choices are in unequal societies are indeed free, is far more valuable than excusing all acts because of the sex of the person who carries them out.

Pornification is an encroaching issue, and it is right to question it.

But I doubt very much that the children would be aware of the full range of films she has appeared in, and if explanation was needed it could be limited to her non-porn works.

rootypig · 15/10/2014 07:09

Do you think all parent volunteers who read have a virtuous sexual history?

I do think that most parents' names wouldn't turn up hardcore group sex videos in the first page of results Grin

differentnameforthis · 15/10/2014 07:11

I can't speak for all parents, but I don't let my primary aged children use google unless I am there with them & 2 safesearch is ON.

That would be parental responsibility!

differentnameforthis · 15/10/2014 07:14

rootypig My point by saying I doubt she is going to be advocating her past career as a valid career choice is that she isn't going to be telling a group of primary-schoolers that they should be working in porn!!

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 15/10/2014 07:17

It may be right to question the porn when she was doing it, but I hardly think it's appropriate to be questioning her former choices and whether or not that renders her able to read to primary school children.

I didn't say that because she is a woman that it excuses all acts. But it also means that just because she is a woman that made some poor choices previously, it isn't appropriate to keep throwing them in her face and dredging it up when she is making better choices.

I would have thought people would be better to say "well, she's made some poor choices before, but well done her for recognising that literacy is important for children so that perhaps they grow up with the education and confidence not to make some of those poor choices themselves." You know, instead of once again dragging her name through the mud and making it sound like the kids can "catch porn" by association. Hmm

differentnameforthis · 15/10/2014 07:23

Perhaps not, but she once did OMG!! I can't think of anything to say to this, except people, and thus their views, change!!

I do think that most parents' names wouldn't turn up hardcore group sex videos in the first page of results Then perhaps we should discount any celebrity who has ever posed naked or made a sex tape, from being in close contact with children!!

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 15/10/2014 07:25

or taken drugs, or drank excessively, or done anything inappropriate...

well... not many left are there... Hmm

Frightening. Surprised at anyone who'd be happy with her visiting their child's school. Smacks of normalising porn to me.

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 15/10/2014 07:33

Really? Normalising porn??? How? She's not reading porn to them. I highly doubt they're introducing her to the children as a porn star.

No, let's just paint her with with a big red sign "porn star" and forever have her doing penance to the public. God forbid she be allowed to live amongst us and actually do good things like reading to children. Hmm

I repeat, I would have NO PROBLEM with her reading at my dcs' schools.

rootypig · 15/10/2014 07:35

And my point is, that all children are NOT carefully supervised when it comes to the internet, and this woman has a very high profile for VERY hardcore porn.

I am all down for her talking openly about that. I am all down for her visiting her children's / nieces' / neighbours' schools to read. I'm just saying that carting her into a classroom on the basis that she is a fireman / actress / pornstar probably isn't the best idea for 8 or 9 year olds.

Not some big moral judgement. Just probably not the best idea. Her porn is really, REALLY extreme.

MrsDV agreed - and I said upthread that her being in schools to talk about porn with teenagers is probably a great idea. Though actually when Sasha Grey was initially a pornstar and initially talking about the industry, she was a LOT more gung ho than lines about college tuition and empowerment.

treaclesoda · 15/10/2014 07:37

that report is three years old. I am very very against the normalisation of porn but I'm guessing that if there were any negative effects of her reading to the kids, someone would have written about it by now. With any luck, the kids in the class will end up well enough educated in general to be able to grow up to see the porn industry for the misogynistic exploitation that it is.

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 15/10/2014 07:38

You realise, of course, that this squarely places us right back in the time where women were slotted into "good girls" and "bad girls" and treated just how they were perceived. And you are now guilty of doing the same thing. You are treating her as less worthy of reading to children based on your perception of her from only knowing that aspect of her life. You don't KNOW her - she's a woman that is more than JUST her porn career. That is not the sum total of her life.

How shallow and how... dare I say it? ... sexist.

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 15/10/2014 07:42

Geougeously is right. Look at the date on the 'news' article. 2011.

So you think porn stars shouldn't read in elementary schools for Read Across America, op? Or perhaps only people who struggle to read should work in the porn industry, to avoid such an embarassing incident repeating?

The porn industry is a part of modern life, and a lot.of people work in the industry, I don't see how you can have this reaction to a story from 3 years ago unless you are putting your head in the sand to try to make it all go away. It won't go anywhere with treating people like this.

What possible harm could it do? Out parents/guardians who have exposed their young child to porn? That is not the actress's responsibiliy to teach parents appropriate boundaries with their children. She does seem to have good boundaries herself though.fully clothed, picture book shown to the children, sat down, eye contact, involving them.

Working in the porn industry does not mean you can't teach. Many do both.

Should David Tennent be kept out of schools because he's played baddies? Peter Capaldi because he's spent so long swearing on screen?

ChoochiWoo · 15/10/2014 10:17

How old are the kids shes reading to?If their old enough to Google that may be an issue

Branleuse · 15/10/2014 10:22

omg, outrageous. Tainted women allowed near children.

Those children will probably become porn stars now

CharethCutestory · 15/10/2014 10:28

I agree that she mustn't be "tainted" by her past, but what's the answer to the googling issue?

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 15/10/2014 10:32

The answer to the googling issue?? Parental responsibility to be aware of what your child is looking up on the internet, of course.

ChoochiWoo · 15/10/2014 10:36

There'll be some gadget/phone lying around , if sasha grey isnt her real name just use her RL name.

FreudiansSlipper · 15/10/2014 11:21

nice bit of publicity for her

and the school is in Compton how sad that these children just because of where they live they can be exploited in this way they deserve better you really think she would go into a school in a nicer part of LA and be reading to school children

Greenwayslide · 15/10/2014 12:57

Sasha grey won't be her real name, also I have read that she acts in normal films now.

I doubt she introduced herself to children using her pornstar name.

ChoochiWoo · 15/10/2014 12:59

I bloody hope not ^^

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 15/10/2014 13:01

They're not being exploited. They're being read to. "They deserve better" ? what nonsense. They deserve people to care about their reading... and that's what they've got.

Not a clue what the "you really think she would go into a school in a nicer part of LA and be reading to school children" is all about. Confused Poor areas can't have people in to do reading??

PuffinsAreFicticious · 15/10/2014 13:12

It might be nice if, instead of publicity stunts, the Compton School Board just got off their arses and taught the children to read and write properly. Iirc, something like half of the children in the schools board's area don't graduate.

THIS is the real concern. The Sasha Grey thing is a bit of a weird sideline. They have had really high profile people doing the reading across America thing, it was sparked by the No Child Left Behind Act. Sadly, given that Compton is what it is, they will only ever get Z-listers like ex-nasty porn people.

I'm glad she's spoken about how her much yelled about free choice to go into porn wasn't free at all. Anyone have a link? This article is from a while ago, if she does this again since her epiphany, maybe she could speak to older children about the cognitive dissonance around all aspects of women in the sex industry as well.

FreudiansSlipper · 15/10/2014 13:23

I said the children deserve better

Why are the children getting an ex porn star now actress/celeb why can they not have a sports person or politician or someone that when they ask who this person is what do they do they have someone that may be aspirational not someone who seeks publicity on the back on their old career

Of course they deserve being read too how have you got from my post they do not
