Is anyone else seeing this more and more?

More and more when I visit newspaper links (Telegraph, Indy etc), under serious news stories, there's some kind of inappropriate suggested links to other stories which feature naked women or other such fare.

For example, underneath this story about the rape and murder of two British tourists, it's served up "Karl Lagerfield takes naked pictures of Miley Cyrus" and the Colombian women's cycling team. Maybe the word "naked" is in all three but FFS.

Also not happy that it shows the Miley picture right there in the thumbnail. What's the point of campaigning against p3 if this shit is happening? The Miley picture was also served up under the article about a UN conference (for men) on feminism...

RIP Hannah Witheridge and David Miller.

Sorry, could've given it a better title.

The cycle team was in the context of their seemingly revealing costumes, as opposed to the sporting achievements, natch

Link again

I think installing an ad-blocker saves me from quite a bit of this.

antimatter · 01/10/2014 08:42

I noticed the same in The Independent.
It must be some crap algorithm. Which isn't an excuse!

PetulaGordino · 01/10/2014 09:15

what would happen if you used an incognito browser or deleted your cookies out of curiosity?

it's not quite the same thing at all, but this article i thought was interesting, as i always wondered where those weird articles came from. i never click on them because they seemed dodgy www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-29322578

FuckOffWeasel · 01/10/2014 10:16

I'm seeing more and more of it too. Also fat celebrities and "people you won't believe exist" Confused

ElephantsNeverForgive · 01/10/2014 10:18

Local news paper sites are awful for this.

LurcioAgain · 01/10/2014 13:30

I was going to link to that bbc article, Petula.

Quick summary: it's about the guy who founded this sort of "click-bait" advertising. The links are provided free of charge to the hosting website, e.g. Huff Post, and the resulting advertising revenue shared between the hosting site and the click-bait provider. It is deliberately aimed at being lowest-common-denominator.

But the interesting thing is "that lowest-common-denominator" seems to overlap so very heavily with "deeply sexist and misogynistic".

YonicScrewdriver · 01/10/2014 13:48

It just seems massively disrespectful that there's not a logic rule stopping "celeb naked" news from the very same newspaper being served under an article containing the words rape and murder.

it really does.

loloftherings · 01/10/2014 16:33

It's even more 'hilarious' when it's a story about Jimmy Savile, etc. and there's a column of stories about young female celebs sex tapes, scandalous topless pics, bikini shots of 16yo celebs and the likes down the right hand side.

ElephantsNeverForgive · 02/10/2014 17:50

This is what greats you below a picture of a friends Primary DC and her peers on the local paper website.
Hmm

ElephantsNeverForgive · 02/10/2014 17:56

Greets.
It's some utter sexist crap about women having curves in the 'right' places.

TheSameBoat · 02/10/2014 18:04

I totally agree. It's annoying at the best of times but when it's underneath an article about some poor woman who's been raped or murdered it's particularly galling and highlights the completely fucked up relationship our culture has with women's bodies.

I've seen it before, or course, but it was actually having the naked picture on the link so you couldn't avoid seeing Miley's breasts that brought me up short,
