Brooks Newmark "Entrapment"

There doesn't seem to be any suggestion "she" asked him to send her the photo, is there?

So simply being an attractive young woman and complimenting national politicians on twitter is "entrapping" men into sending photos of their genitals?

^^ This is the sort of attitude that allows the Rennards, Saviles et al to get away with abusing their power for years.

You have determined this journalist is "despicable" based on assertions by Newmark, other Tories and rival newspapers. You have concluded as a result that the GF blog is not reliable, despite GF having a record for exposing other political scandals and having a distinctly right-wing stance.

I don't always agree with Fleet Street Fox but I agree with this:

"what he did was foolishly accept the flirtation of a woman, give her his mobile number, and then demand intimate photographs of her.

"Not once, not twice, but repeatedly. He asked, requested, persuaded, induced and inveigled.

"He was a man of wealth, power and influence, taking sexual gratification from what he thought was a young woman with none of those things.

"That’s a bad thing. It’s a bad thing whether you’re left or right wing and whichever news outlet you prefer.

"In any other job, on work time and the work phone, it’s a disciplinary offence."

empire's attitude can be compared with that that allowed Jimmy Saville to get away with his crimes?

WTAF? Stop digging Flora, you're starting to look stupid.

FloraFox · 01/10/2014 16:13

empire using the photographs has nothing to do with Newmark's behaviour. The publication of the photographs by the press (note, not the Mirror) was just as bad as the use of the photographs by the journalist.

You've obviously been reading different accounts from me. I'm not sure where you're getting your information but the only two accounts that are relevant are the journalist's and Newmark's and I haven't seen a clear account from him anywhere, just a lot of dissembling from his supporters.

The Mirror has apologised to the women for the use of their pictures, which were not published by the Mirror but were published by other newspapers. I've just noticed your comment above:

During a late-night chat with the undercover reporter, who had sent him an explicit picture supposedly of “Sophie”, Newmark asked for a more explicit picture “without your hands in the way and legs parted”. He then said: “I will send you something in return – that way we each have a secret.”

So the reporter sent an explicit photo first, and BN asked for another one, and also sent one himself.

This quote does not indicate whether he asked for the first picture. Also, it clearly wasn't as explicit as he wanted as he asked for no hands in the way and legs parted.

Did he offer career favours in exchange for photos? No. Do you not think that his belief that he was dealing with a junior woman within his realm of power bolstered his belief that he could do this without being caught? GF has indicated that this was targetted at him because of complaints about his previous behaviour.

Did he initiate the photos? No. How do you know this?

Did he start the flirting? It's not clear. Did he initiate contact? No. He initiated the private messaging. People tweet at public figures all the time, public figures don't follow them back to send private messages. That is initiating contact.

Perhaps you can suggest how a journalist would investigate claims that a minister, who is campaigning to increase the participation of women in politics, has a reputation for being sleazy with said women, if none of the women are willing to put their names on the record? How are such things to be uncovered?

Empire did you read what GF said? The tweets to the other MPs were cover. It would be pretty odd if someone set up a twitter account and only tweeted at one person. Whether or not that is true remains to be seen but there is a plausible answer that suggests this was not a fishing expedition.

I think the abuse by men of public office for sex is a significant feminist issue. The abuse of images of women in the media is also a feminist issue but one thing being a feminist issue does not make another thing not a feminist issue.

Entrapment itself is not the issue. Entrapment is permitted when there is a public interest, as I believe there is in this case. I think you are overstating the manipulation of the target.

I see you haven't suggested how a journalist might go about exposing a person abusing his office for sex from women (use of other women's pictures aside). Do you not think there is a problem with creating barriers to exposing abusive behaviours by men in the interests of protecting their privacy? Do you not see how this exposes women to abuse?

Buffy

"Twat exploits women to highlight other twat's exploitation of women."

Yep.

empire can you answer my question about how you think a journalist would go about exposing a man abusing his office for sex?
