Earlier on this evening I was watching celebrity chase on itv. There was an old bloke on who is a well know tv personality and he was against the lady who they have to compete with.

She won.

He replied with "ah well the best man won"

Her face was set in stone and rightly so.

The bloody audience laughed and give him a clap !

WTF? What a wanker! If I was in the audience I would have shouted "DICKHEAD"

Feeling thick. Is he calling her a man?

FlossyMoo · 14/09/2014 10:46

I may regret this but isn't it just a saying?

I'm not implying it's right but 'the best man won' is an old phrase.

Maybe he was saying it to have a dig at her maybe not.

TortoiseshellSpecs · 14/09/2014 10:49

I would agree, flossy. I wouldn't have taken that as him being a sexist shit.

Isn't the female chase person supposed to be quite stern faced anyway? Isn't that the character she plays?

Anotherchapter · 14/09/2014 10:50

Yeah he was saying she was a man.

It was the tone and then the laugh of the audience that make me believe it wasn't said in sportsmanship.

Who are the people in question? Starting to think I live under a rock

FlossyMoo · 14/09/2014 10:56

It could vey well be canned laughter OP.

The Character she plays does have a male persona. Another of the chasers is called the beast and I don't think that is a term of endearment Hmm

There is sadly an abundance of sexist language on TV but I wouldn't personally put too much thought in to this one.

SevenZarkSeven · 14/09/2014 10:56

Saying the best man won when there's only two people in the competition and the other is a woman is weird at best and pointed in some way at worst.

If it was just a normal thing to say why did everybody laugh?

Zazzles007 · 14/09/2014 11:02

I do think this is a dreadfully sexist thing to say. He insulted her gender with the comment, and insulted all women in a backhanded way as well. The message is that men are winners, not women. If you are a woman, and you won, there is something masculine about you, you are not feminine. I am not in the UK, so did not see this episode, but I would email the producers and tell them that this bit should have ended up on the cutting room floor. Horrid.

Anotherchapter · 14/09/2014 11:11

zazzle you put it a lot better than me!

No worries Another Smile.

Zazzles007 · 14/09/2014 11:22

The other thing is it tells us how narrow and restrictive the male definition of 'female' is in society. Women, according to this definition, are pretty, slim, feminine, don't win against men, are passive etc etc, all things that we as real women have to fight against. Now whilst the character in "The Chase" is a more masculine version of femininity, it is still wrong to compare her to a man, as she is a woman, was born a woman, self-identifies as a woman etc. Just because she is at the more masculine end of femininity is no reason to insult her.

buwegevove · 15/09/2014 13:46

But is it really "sexist" or are you all just over-analyzing the world through feminist-tinted glasses and seeing non-existant "sexism" everywhere?

I've seen female contestants refer to the female chaser as the Trunchball. And I've seen the host take pot-shots at that really tall huge chaser for his size. It's all just friendly bartering.

FuckOffWeasel · 15/09/2014 21:58

I think you may be under-analyzing. It's always a risk when you're a bit thick.

CaptChaos · 15/09/2014 22:02

Snort

Pepperwitheverything · 15/09/2014 22:10

The man in question is the old fella from Strictly Come Dancing......Len Goodman or something. I had the feeling he wasn't sexist, just desperate to be liked. (is there a difference..?)

CaptChaos · 15/09/2014 22:13

Feminists over analyse and see sexism everywhere: check

If we can get a feminists are all ugly, hairy lesbians who hate men and don't like sex...... It would be a normal day for the trolls of FWR

Anotherchapter · 15/09/2014 22:23

Desperate to be liked? No I didn't see that.

OP posts:
FuckOffWeasel · 15/09/2014 22:27

It's weird Chaos. A woman sees sexism everywhere and somehow that's proof women are crazy, not that maybe sexism is everywhere.

I wonder who would have to see it for it to believed? A man?

Pepperwitheverything · 15/09/2014 22:40

Chapter you and I were watching a different programme then. He was harmless....I saw the incident you mentioned and it really was nothing. If anything, he was delighted to see Anne and gave the I pressing she was better.

Pepperwitheverything · 15/09/2014 22:41

IMPRESSION!!

Zazzles007 · 16/09/2014 00:01

are you all just over-analyzing the world

Nope, I am in a profession where my analytical skills and capabilities are prized and well paid for. I am expected to be able to see patterns in things, and be able to describe them accurately and succinctly. I have also tested in the 97th percentile of the general population for my intelligence, and in comparison, I can see that it is likely that you are not used to looking at things on a much, much deeper level.

However, with your very shallow outlook on life, it is likely that you let comments, actions, people, events, activities and in general, life, pass you by without noticing what is really, really going on. You live your life in an unconscious bubble, unable to comprehend much of what is going on around you, yet you aim these absurd statements at others and expect them to capitulate to your ridiculous and unthought-out 'revelations'. In short, your view on life is most likely to be exceeding myopic and narrow. It highly likely that you are swimming in the shallow end of the gene pool.

Btw, did I mention that I did a shit load of psychology at university?

ABlandAndDeadlyCourtesy · 16/09/2014 07:26

Buwe, why do you think the saying is, "let the best man win", not "let the best person"?

How would you feel if there was a saying, "let the best white win"?
