Interesting article by Laura Bates who started the Everyday Sexism project about the typical comments that appear at the end of articles about feminism online - and how to counter them

It starts with a quote about how the comments under any article about feminism justifies feminism. Ironically it's true with this article too!

Great article, Laura bates is always good value. Whenever I'm confronted with sexism/misogyny, I'm usually too angry/ flabbergasted to think of clever retorts or responses, so I find this really useful.

Lovely to see the same old Guardian MRA twunts out in force in the comments. Lewis's Law being proven yet again.

FreeSpiritsBadAttitude · 04/09/2014 16:19

That is excellent, thanks for posting. Love Laura Bates.

Dear god I wish I had not dipped into the comments. What is it about feminism and the Guardian that brings out all the misogynist 'what about the menz' vitriol?

PetulaGordino · 04/09/2014 18:27

the irony almost hurts doesn't it

virenall · 07/09/2014 21:42

quote:"Ur Glam Pal Charlieâ„¢ @CannibalKisses
@EverydaySexism "A woman's place is in the kitchen" you know what you're right. Lemme grab a knife."

So the "best comeback" to a sexist comment is to make a threat of violence??/

scallopsrgreat · 07/09/2014 22:09

Oh it wouldn't do for women to threaten violence. That's mens job.

Don't worry though she's just getting the knife to cut the bread for a sammich.

Who said it was the best comeback anyway?

PetulaGordino · 07/09/2014 22:11

And of course scallops a single comment can negate the entire point of an article

scallopsrgreat · 07/09/2014 22:13

Of course it can. When men are actually violent to women everyday.

CaptChaos · 07/09/2014 23:16

100 women killed so far this year through male violence. 3 women beheaded in the last 6 months in London. 2 women a week killed by their partner or ex partner in the UK.

But yeah, a stupid, single off colour joke more than makes that ok.

grimbletart · 08/09/2014 11:54

virenall's funny (in a pathetic sort of way). Men can threaten women with violence every moment of the day over the net for offering opinions (think Mary Beard and Criado-Perez just as an e.g.) and in real life, and commit violence every day, yet one odd comeback to a sexist joke on the net and he comes over all fluffy and defensive. I think he doesn't quite grasp the concept of scale.
