God that's so frustrating. Is it really worth making millions of women in the UK feel that rape is "not that big a deal" to people. Just to let one selfish cunt of a man play football? Even though he won't be fighting fit or have kept up with his sport for 2 years? I hope he fails miserable and Sheffield United lose all their fans as a result.
The fact that he won't admit he did anything wrong when the facts of the case are barely even in dispute means there is nothing to stop him doing it again. He only sees what he did as "cheating". What happens when he breaks up with his girfriend and it's not cheating anymore?

YonicScrewdriver · 11/11/2014 14:45

I wonder if anyone has asked him that, FOG?

"Ched, if you're ever single again, what will you do the next time your mate texts you to say he's got a bird?"

lemonmuffin1 · 11/11/2014 15:40

the guy needs to earn a living tho, he's been to prison, paid his dues.

why can't he get a job and support his family like everyone else?

grimbletart · 11/11/2014 15:50

Yonic - what makes us think that not being single would stop him in the future anyway? After all, his girlfriend is daft enough to stick with him after being insulted and demeaned by his actions in the worst possible way. Pretty much a green light for continuing knob behaviour I'd say.

thedancingbear · 11/11/2014 15:52

Lemonmuffin, no-one's saying that he shouldn't be able to get a job. Being a professional footballer is more than that - even players at smaller clubs are effectively local celebrities - and the fact that one of these guys is an unrepentant rapist is extremely damaging.

Do you disagree with any of that?

PuffinsAreFicticious · 11/11/2014 15:53

He and all other convicted rapists absolutely should be able to get a job and support his family. Just not in the public eye. I'm sure his girlfriend's father would be happy to employ him.

There's lots of young men who could take his place, SUFC haven't been without a striker since he raped that young woman, have they? So why would they want an unfit rapist back? Odd, isn't it?

vesuvia · 11/11/2014 16:22

lemonmuffin1 wrote - "why can't he get a job and support his family like everyone else?"

Did I miss where people said he should not be allowed to have a job?

I think many of the objectors are questioning why he should get his old job back, with its relatively high profile/role model status.

Meanwhile, I'd prefer to think of how his victim's job prospects can be improved.

Violetcloud · 11/11/2014 16:38

He's going to be a role model for young fans, this rapist. He will be cheered by thousands (exaggeration? I don't know how many supporters Sheffield United actually have) while his victim has been hounded and had her life torn apart.

The supporters have been chanting his name at recent matches, according to the BBC. I imagine that many women will be left feeling the same as I do; Women are not as important as football.

PuffinsAreFicticious · 11/11/2014 16:39

His victim's job prospects are kind of screwed right now, given that the rapist's fans and family have outed her new identity on social media. I suspect she will have to move again, change names and appearance again. Poor kid Sad

lemonmuffin1 · 11/11/2014 18:21

but this is the only job he can do, hes been training for it since he was a child. let him come back into society, be rehabillitated and support his family.

how on earth do you know what his family are?

A lawyer has qualifications which last for ever, a footballer does not.

PuffinsAreFicticious · 11/11/2014 18:45

His family consists of him.

He has a girlfriend, no children.

The fact that the only thing he can do is kick a ball about is neither here nor there. He can go to college and get more qualifications. He can work in a shop, he could sweep roads, he could collect garbage. Except he probably wouldn't, because he has an unspent conviction for rape.

So, let's turn this around. If I don't have to employ someone because they have an unspent conviction for rape, why do people who believe he should just have a shoe in to the lucrative professional football scene believe that?

No one has a right to employment. No one convicted of a serious violent crime such as rape has the right to get their old job back. Why is the rapist Evans your exception?

MunningCockery · 11/11/2014 19:04

lemon 'but this is the only job he can do, hes been training for it since he was a child. let him come back into society, be rehabillitated and support his family.'

FFS, what do you mean by let him 'be rehabilitated'? He has shown no remorse; denies his offence in spite of both the conviction and the evidence; and has caused the most immensely impactful additional and vile distress to his victim. Which part of that screams his 'rehabilitation' prospects exactly?

And as for his 'job' being the only one he can do, utter utter bollocks. He can be a dustman as far I care or anything which doesn't conflict with the fact he is a REGISTERED SEX OFFENDERHmm Or did that bit escape you? Or the fact that he is technically actually still serving his sentance & is out on licence only? Yes, let's pop a convicted rapist out there for young boys - who KNOW he is a rapist? - to applaud when he scores and get the, very very firm and clear, message that being a rapist (HAVING raped somebody?) is just dandy. Seriously, what planet are you on?

Rape is NOT akin to other criminal offences, not remotely. And even a club dense enough to let him return or join will have to employ special measures that do NOT apply to other players as he is on the Sex Offenders list - with all that that goes with that.

Maybe you have the luxury of being that rare female who hasn't either experienced some kind of sexual assualt yourself or had a friend go through it, as it's the only reason I can think of as to how (let alone why) you'd spout such tosh.

YonicScrewdriver · 11/11/2014 19:20

It really ISN'T the only job he can do. It's probably the most lucrative one, but he's a fit, healthy young man. He has options.

PuffinsAreFicticious · 11/11/2014 19:32

"Mr Evans, acknowledging the destructive nature of the acts, which led to his conviction" from the most mealy mouthed press statement in the history of the world

He acknowledged the destructive nature of raping someone? When? Did we miss that? Will he be holding another press conference where he wholeheartedly and without reservation apologises for it?

SevenZarkSeven · 11/11/2014 19:59

Well that's a massive "fuck you" to rape victims & women everywhere, and most especially his victim.

It is also a steaming pile of bullshit.

This part for instance:

"The Club agrees with the recent statements of The PFA, to the effect that professional footballers should be treated as equals before the law, including in circumstances where they seek to return to work following periods of incarceration. The Club rejects the notion that society should seek to impose extrajudicial or post-term penalties on anyone. In a nation of laws, served by an elected parliament and duly constituted courts of law, there can be no place for 'mob justice'. The Club believes that the only penalties following from a conviction on any charge should be those set forth in law and deemed appropriate by a court of competent jurisdiction.

If someone in my line of work was convicted of rape they would not be coming back. The idea that people who are convicted of crimes have some kind of right to go waltzing back to their old jobs is a total fucking lie.

In addition, would they be taking him back if he had raped a 5 year old, or a man? Answer = No they fucking well wouldn't.

Bastard scum the whole bunch of them.

Totally fucked off and totally unsurprised here.

YonicScrewdriver · 11/11/2014 20:46

"Mob justice"

Seriously?

Thousands of people sign a civilised petition and that's mob justice? But ched's supporters illegally disclose his victim's name and hound her, unconfirmed by him, and that's, what? Just dandy?!

YonicScrewdriver · 11/11/2014 20:50

.", the Club considers rape, the crime for which Mr Evans was convicted, to be a heinous crime worthy of serious punishment as provided under law. The Club has been assured by Mr Evans that he shares these value judgements. "

Mmm hmm. However, Ched the rapist doesn't share the judgement that he raped someone cos, y'know, then he'd've committed a heinous crime.

redwarf · 11/11/2014 20:57

The decision is a disagrace. There should be protests at the ground from the supporters, perhaps then the they would listen.

PuffinsAreFicticious · 11/11/2014 22:51

If the mood should take anyone, there is a list of SUFCs sponsors at the bottom of this page. There's a twitter campaign going on right now, asking them all how they feel about a rapist doing a little PR for their brands.

partialderivative · 12/11/2014 07:43

"Television presenter Charlie Webster has resigned as a patron of Sheffield United after the club allowed convicted rapist Ched Evans to train."

www.bbc.com/news/uk-30015701

Good for her!

partialderivative · 12/11/2014 07:46

Maybe if MNers keep on clicking the link it will remain in the 'most read' list on the BBC home page and get more people reading about it.

YonicScrewdriver · 12/11/2014 07:52

Well done Charlie Webster.
