Ok this has got me cross but I don'tknow what to say. how would you respond to a fb post ( yes another) stating that women are their own worst enemy as they post explicit pics of themselves on fb but at the same time hate objectification.

"I agree"??

It all depends on context surely?

Some women make a living out of posing provocatively, others class it as objectification.

Sure it's a generalisation, but so is any reply you could make....

The "Unfriend" button is a welcome ally...

MummyBeerest · 01/08/2014 20:57

Silly women, wanting to look nice and not be hassled. ..

whereisshe · 01/08/2014 21:02

"Women" are not an homogenous group with a hive mind. One woman may wish to pose in just knickers, another woman may find that tarty, a third woman may see it as evidence of the first woman being brainwashed by a society that objectifies the female form.., all of these things can perfectly legitimately be opinions simultaneously held by different women without inherent contradiction.

Men hold different opinions from each other all the time and that's usually considered ok.

WatchingSeaMonkeys · 01/08/2014 21:02

Silly me - when I see the phrase "explicit pictures" it doesn't conjure up an image of a night down town with mates.

Surely the women would only be their own "worst enemies" if the ones complaining were the same ones that had posted the "explicit" pictures?

That's why it's a generalisation & the person needs to be unfriended as there's no chance of reasoning....

scallopsrgreat · 01/08/2014 21:04

How about: women have worse enemies than themselves...

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 01/08/2014 21:22

I would probably say something about internalised oppression and how for all of us our self-esteem is tied up in the things we are judged on. So women are judged primarily on their attractiveness and sexiness to men (whatever else they achieve - e.g. the way the new female members of the govt. were judged on what they were wearing, like that's the most important thing about the people who are about to run the country).

It's fine I think to do what you need to get by while at the same time examining the context in which you make your 'choices' - I rail against beauty practices but still shave my legs.

Explicit selfies aren't great and will probably come back to haunt those women at some point but my reaction is compassion not judgment. They are doing what makes them feel worthful in a world with a fucked up sense of worth.

Women are not their own worst enemies. That would be the men who kill and rape a shocking number of women every year.

Imsosorryalan · 01/08/2014 21:27

Wow, great and very true answers. I'd love to post all of them. But I think your right in that I wonder what difference it would make. I may just have to reply to the womens worst enemy line though with the answer of rape and murder. I'm also de friending the idiot pronto!

Not the same women...

And why do those that post those pictures feel they need to?

ArsenicFaceCream · 02/08/2014 01:54

What Monty et al said. How could anyone think it was the same women?

AskBasil · 02/08/2014 22:01

Because women are all the same Arsenic

Of course.

ArsenicFaceCream · 02/08/2014 22:55

Oh yes "Women" Hmm Sad Angry

AskBasil · 02/08/2014 23:05

Or more correctly, "bloody women"

Grin
hotdogchallenge · 03/08/2014 14:58

How about "I don't have a response for that on my precompiled list of 'clever' answers, however I will attempt to summon the power of original thought to consider your point and its validity and whether I need to reconsider my views. I would hate to churn out trite statements supplied from elsewhere that I don't necessarily understand, like a tribalist buffoon."

CaptChaos · 03/08/2014 15:26

The message from the hivemind is telling me that one woman doesn't represent all women, no matter how much some men and, sadly some women, want them to.
