Abortion clinic escorts

A friend of mine lives in Texas and volunteers at weekends as a clinic escort, escorting women through protestors to get them safely inside.

Are such things needed here, and if so any idea how I could go about volunteering? I live in S London/Surrey

Thanks

Cod

How awful that that role exists! Angry
Although there are some vocal protests here, I can't say I've ever heard of that role existing here. Could be wrong though.

That's horrendous :(

codandchipstwice · 01/08/2014 18:06

Honestly, it is so awful, her stories have really inspired me and pushed me further pro-choice

I have heard about this, as well, not sure about UK.

The other thing that I have have heard of is putting a woman from Ireland / NI up while she is over here to have an abortion, it's expensive to get over here etc so apparently it helps a lot. Equally that's a much bigger thing having someone in your house! So just putting it out there.

SevenZarkSeven · 01/08/2014 21:04

here is a charity that does a range of things around women coming over here for abortions so that might be something to look at Smile

Thanks for the link. Will look into that when I get home.

Now THAT is something I'd love to do as a form of support. I'd be happy to put up women who needed accommodation while here. Not sure I'm in a prime location though so will look further...

MollySolverson · 02/08/2014 09:03

Would it be inappropriate to have a woman in your house if you had young children? I.e. they might be the last thing she needs near her at that exact time?

There's a Marie Stopes in Brixton Hill, I think they get protesters occasionally but nothing like the situation in the US. I think the police in London have more powers to move people along whereas in the US there are more constitutional protections that conservative courts keep upholding.

My stepdad used to be an escort (we lived in the US). A clinic doctor in our city was killed by a sniper, it is absolutely insane back there.

Anyway you might contact Marie Stopes and see if they need people for anything. I think a lot of family planning services have suffered from budget cuts too.

This is something I would love to do. I will look into it via the links on this thread.

I had an abortion some 9 years ago and the people outside the clinic...well I have no words. I'm with you OP.

People did this in Liverpool when I was there, because a lot of women come over to Liverpool. I'm not sure if location is a factor. A bloody cordon would be the thing to do.

I presume people have seen this wonderful couple.

I love this, especially the weird hobby one!

I'll get in touch with the link above too, thank you

I was going to recommend the abortion support network too.
