With revenge porn increasing in the UK and tougher laws against it being proposed, what does this say about our ability to trust our intimate partners?

There is a piece in the Telegraph today about Tulisa's experiences with an ex posting a sex tape of her giving him oral sex.

How would you want this policed?

From my point of view, it's a hideous invasion of privacy and a betrayal of trust. It can have long term consequences for the woman who is targeted in this way, and, at the moment, it is almost impossible for the police to do anything about it, except file some sort of DV report. I'm interested in hearing your views on this though.

Hmm. The way I feel currently is that if you consent to have a video or photo taken then you need to assume that that photo or video will be seen by people who you don't intend it for. Am I being too harsh?

What I would like to see is idiot fuckwits posting photos/videos and everyone else in the world going "fucking weirdo," shrugging their shoulders and moving on. The issue with "revenge porn" is the sense of shame women are supposed to feel for having a body or having sex.

No I don't think that consenting to a partner taking a picture or filming something should be taken as consent for anyone and everyone in the whole world to see those images. That's just not how people work and is putting a sort of theoretical legal idea over how people in normal life actually operate.

I'm not sure on the law TBH. A professional photographer owns the images they take generally and can do what they like with them. Who owns the images if they are non professional? There is already an expectation of consent for images to be published in some situations, that could be extended to images deemed explicit or something like that. It would also help with images made without the person's knowledge.

I do think that with society the way it is, something needs to be done. This is a gendered crime isn't it due to societies fucked up attitudes towards women.

That sounds good.

At the moment, you have to copyright the images and then trawl through the various websites that have put them up and enforce your copyright. The images are often downloaded and then uploaded to other websites. You can only enforce your copyright in the countries you hold it as well.

I don't see that, if you have consented or indeed taken a picture/video for a single explicit purpose, that that gives implied consent for it to be used wherever and whenever. That would be stretching the limits of consent. It is a sexual crime.
