I have enough trouble convincing DD2 she really can do Maths as well as the boys (she's gone all the way through school playing second fiddle to a Maths teachers DS. The fact it's his mum who teaches maths seems to escape her )

To be fair, they don't actually say the violet one is a girl's calculator... Let's give them the benefit of the doubt and assume that one is for the boys and the complex trig one is for the girls

Tbh I'd say that says more about your assumptions than theirs. Because it's serious colouring it must be aimed at men? [Confused] couldn't it just be serious colour for serious calculations (I.e. not distracting etc) rather than serious for men?

But why would violet be considered not serious? Because it is a colour associated with women and girls. Why would a colour be distracting.

I would say violet and pink in this case are distracting because they are bright. Low colours are less distracting.

Yes buffy they do but in this case the app makes no such claim so how can the op berate them for sexism that she has (due to conditioning) applied? I just don't see developers sitting about saying "we'll have a nice man colour and all the functions for the clever men and the little ladies can have niiice simple one, all pretty in pink"

No.... it's very simple. Serious colours, like blue, grey etc for serious maths. The kind done by serious people, like..... erm...... men.

I'm going to be buggered. I WANT a purple calculator, but will be doing serious maths. Do you think that, if I got a serious calculator and painted it purple, all the serious buttons that I need will cease to function?

Edam, if that's the attitude then it's never going to change is it? Surely the first step is us adults not leaping to pink for girls blue for boys when that isn't being said and challenging it when it is? If we just assume it means girl when it's pink the only possible solution is to never make things pink/blue which seems silly.

I have a pink Casio calculator. Does all the same functions but with the added benefit is that it NEVER gets nicked by the men in my family.

And yes of course it's terrible that the pink calculator aimed at females is has basic functions and is positioned next to the seriously coloured serious calculator which is for doing proper sums and so can't be pink because obviously that would put off most of the purchasers of proper serious calculators.

I would like an orange scientific calculator, or a purple one, I think My current one is blue. Which is fine. And I suppose means it is less likely to have "a bit of a moment" and tell me all the wrong answers like it might do if it were pink. Or something.

I have a number of pink calculators at school. They are the same model as the ones we recommend to the pupils but instead of the grey/blue they normally come in I bought 5 pink ones as my own that I will lend out whenever necessary. It's the boys who want to use them most often. They don't steal them though (which was precisely my point in buying them) because it's obvious they're mine because they're pink and I decorated them with sparkly stickers.

One where I appreciate having an iPad. The calculator app has just been updated and can be any colour you want, with all the functions and nerdy stuff still intact.

I have the serious default one with the odd orange button though, because I'm too tight to pay 69p for a purple calculator to match my glasses.

There are at least two other simplified non-'gendered' skins.

Yes DD2 has that pink, proper Casio calculator. I have no problem with that, it means she doesn't take her sisters older(non pink one). I have no problem with that.

What I object to is the app only offering simple functions in 'women's colours' it really is perpetuating the stereo type, both of women in general not doing Maths and the women who do not being feminine.
