Heads up for everyone as I bet it's blinding (I love Mary)

It's called 'Oh Do Shut Up Dear' and here's the blurb:

"From torn-out tongues to modern-day internet trolls, professor Mary Beard shares her belief that women's voices have been silenced throughout history, using examples ranging from the writings of Henry James to Homer's Odyssey and threatening posts on social media. Recorded at the British Museum as part of the London Review of Books Winter Lecture series."

Thanks for the heads up :)

bigkidsdidit · 16/03/2014 17:12

Thanks! I'll watch it

GarthsUncle · 16/03/2014 17:29

Thanks I will record it!

BetterWithCheese · 16/03/2014 19:05

I just came on to highlight this. Looks great.

crazy88 · 16/03/2014 19:45

Excellent, it will p*ss dh off no end as he is nursing a hangover after a weekend away and will be in no position to argue. Grin

Was it good? I've taped it, hopefully.

It clashed with Top Gear, ironically!

TunipTheUnconquerable · 16/03/2014 22:39

It was absolutely excellent.
Amazing how easy it is to watch a lecture on tv, if it's a good one. There should be more tv like this.

trufflehunterthebadger · 16/03/2014 22:40

I have just downloaded this as a birthday treat. Ironically watching while ironing DDs pile of pink clothes shuffles about shamefacedly hoping MB is not reading this

GarthsUncle · 16/03/2014 22:41

Reclaim The Pink!

Or, err, something that sounds less rude.

OddFodd · 16/03/2014 23:08

It was brilliant. And has given me an awful lot of food for thought.

I thought is was very measured but she certainly got her point across. I think she's wonderful.

Lio · 17/03/2014 15:14

Missed this on TV but just started reading it in the LRB today. She is fab.

AveryJessup · 18/03/2014 19:17

Loved this, especially when she pointed out how women in public discourse who say something a man disagrees with are dismissed as 'stupid' and these internet trolls write to her calling her a 'moron' whereas men in public discourse are dismissed too but usually simply for being wrong, not fundamentally stupid and worthless.

And that quote she started with about Telemachus and Penelope was awful! Penelope should have used the classic Irish mammy line on him: 'I brought you into this world, I can take you out of it!'. What a thankless brat...

TaurielTest · 19/03/2014 14:37

Loved this too. On iPlayer until Sunday night: www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b03ycql8/Oh_Do_Shut_Up_Dear!_Mary_Beard_on_the_Public_Voice_of_Women/

CaptChaos · 19/03/2014 17:20

Love this.

I think I might have a small crush on MB actually. Blush

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 20/03/2014 20:39

Finally watching it. Brilliant.

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 20/03/2014 23:20

She certainly has Muthos!

But the idea of someone calling a Cambridge professor an "ignorant moron"... Sheesh!
