Sports activity for women - Burlesque?!

This has really pissed me off.

Lets get women into sport by er... Getting them to discover their "sultry side" and pander to porn-led notions of attractiveness. I'm so annoyed.

Flippin' 'eck, isn't it obvious? It's all for the benefit of men!!

'I Will If You Will' is a movement to get us ladies of Bury moving. It's about getting together, trying something new and having a laugh while we do it. So how about it? Join in online and get all the latest news and gossip, as well as keeping up to date with what's going on near you and how to get involved.

Good God - if you were all white metropolitan elite professionals, you'd understand. Simple northerners...

Grin I'll take that as a yes then, Turnip.

Why wouldn't it be OK Goblin? You said yourself, she "chooses" to take it into paid entertainment.

Goblinchild · 08/03/2014 17:24

Thank you, that's the first clear answer I've had. The tipping point has never made sense to me, that if it's OK for women to choose to dance and twerk and strip, then why is it suddenly exploitation to be paid for it?
Why are the same women that support a woman's right to do what she likes with her own body in the dancing field uncomfortable with the idea of students using it as a job to pay their way through college?

I thought feminism was about choice?

It's about freeing women from patriarchal opression. We have gotten more choices as a result of feminist activism however, like being able to have abortions, not marry, vote etc

That comic was beyond stupid - the artist has taken feminist critique of sexist, oppressive ideals invented by men as oh no the feminists are telling women they can't be naked or wear burqas! Stupid feminists telling women how to act! Men never do that! They didn't come up with obligatory burqa's for women, for example! No it's all about women's choice...!

Goblin I guess that's the tipping point there though. If she's using it as a job to pay her way through college, it becomes less of a choice and more of a necessity. It suggests that she feels that the only way she can get through college is to use her body for entertainment. However, if she chose to do that despite having the option of another job that could also pay her way through college, I wouldn't see any issue. It was entirely her choice and not something that she felt that she had to do.

That's what I think anyway. There is a lot of grey area when it comes to things like that though.

'If it's such great exercise why don't you see anyone incorporating it into their running schedule, using handy lamposts along the way?'

DD has two friends that are serious parkour enthusiasts. They incorporate lamposts and all sorts into their fitness workouts, but not whilst wearing tassels and glitter.

JuliaScurr · 08/03/2014 17:47

if it's such great exercise why aren't men doing it?

feminism isn't about choice, it's about fighting systematic oppression. Like socialism

if it's such great exercise why aren't men doing it? This is the first point on this thread that has actually made me sit back and think. I still don't see the issue with someone choosing to go to a burlesque class, and still think feminism is about choice, but Julia's point is valid. I suppose it's to do with men not wanting to celebrate their sexuality in the way that many women do? I like the fact that I can choose to be sexual and celebrate that. Some women don't. Most men don't even consider themselves as sexual beings unless they are thinking about sex as a verb.

JuliaScurr · 08/03/2014 17:53

work for less than minimum wage? don't like it, don't do it. The fact that some choose to do it could not possibly make it more difficult for others to choose not to. Hmm

HoneyDragon · 08/03/2014 17:54

I think pole dancing is becoming a little different. Pole fitness as an industry has been really interesting to watch and I must admit I am seeing a great deal of positivity in it, and there is a slow but increasing amount of men showing interest in it as a sport.

Not too comfortable with burlesque. Certainly round here the marketing focuses on surprising your partner or the old "empowerment" speil for singles.

BeerTricks have you ever seen a pole dancing class? The ones that I have been to are far less sexual than you suggest. Do you know how much physical strength pole dancing requires?

oh, that's why, then, because I am frigid/puritanical/moralistic/prudish/lesbian/manhater
and never celebrate my sexuality ever
because it is dirty

ChocolateSnowflakes · 08/03/2014 17:57

Julia working for less than minimum wage wouldn't usually be a choice though. It's when the choice is taken away that it becomes an issue.
