Sports activity for women - Burlesque?!

This has really pissed me off.

Lets get women into sport by er... Getting them to discover their "sultry side" and pander to porn-led notions of attractiveness. I'm so annoyed.

OP posts:
Loadsofthingstodo · 08/03/2014 15:08

The word 'sports' wasn't mentioned at all.

Loadsofthingstodo · 08/03/2014 15:14

Nor, on a second reading, was "sultry" used either. These things seem to be in your head.

ChocolateSnowflakes · 08/03/2014 15:19

Why has it pissed you off? There are loads of activities listed (as loadsof said, it doesn't mention 'sport' on the burlesque page.) What's wrong with burlesque?

If it were in a category labelled "Sports for women" and it were the only thing listed, while the men's side included various sporting activities, I would understand, but that doesn't seem to be the case...

Loadsofthingstodo · 08/03/2014 15:25

You could see why it may 'piss you off' but it seems to be privately funded and no drain on a public purse. It may be women's choices to do this, and it would appear that you simply want to tell other women what they and shouldn't be doing with their time and cash. There's probably other opportunities for you to that but FWR/Chat isn't one of them. Hopefully.

WidowWadman · 08/03/2014 15:34

Can't see anything offpissing in it to be honest. But a good opportunity to link to this again.

ChocolateSnowflakes · 08/03/2014 16:49

Widow I LOVE that. It's even better than this

TunipTheUnconquerable · 08/03/2014 16:55

Some of those classes are open to 14 year olds Shock

On what planet is that appropriate?

Derek Grin

Don't go - hang around for some positive feedback.

Goblinchild · 08/03/2014 17:02

I think you can pole dance and enjoy Burlesque and wear thongs with glittery nipple covers as long as no man pays you to do it. Because then you are being exploited and victimised.
Or something.

TunipTheUnconquerable · 08/03/2014 17:02

Loadsofthingstodo, under the third green tick it says, 'Why Should I? Bring out your sultry side, boost your self confidence and learn a new skill'.

Perhaps a good idea to read the link before you suggest the OP is imagining things.

Pointeshoes · 08/03/2014 17:03

I would love to do that. Don't think we would get any classes near us!

TunipTheUnconquerable · 08/03/2014 17:03

You'd all be cool with your 14 year old daughters doing this then?

ChocolateSnowflakes · 08/03/2014 17:05

Turnip if I didn't want my 14YO doing an activity, I wouldn't let her go.

That doesn't seem to be what the OPs issue was though. It was about sports activity for women, not about it being available to 14YOs.

TunipTheUnconquerable · 08/03/2014 17:06

The ad actually talks about learning to 'bump and grind'.

It's billed as an 'exercise' activity so I think complaining that the word 'sport' wasn't used is rather splitting hairs.

TunipTheUnconquerable · 08/03/2014 17:09

I'll leave you to it, ladies. Enjoy your mother-and-daughter bumping and grinding lessons.

ChocolateSnowflakes · 08/03/2014 17:09

Is there something wrong with bumping and grinding then, Turnip? I'm still confused as to what the actual issue is here...

ChocolateSnowflakes · 08/03/2014 17:11

Turnip You seem very judgemental tbh. Did you take a look at Widow's link? Here it is for you, just in case: amandapalmer.tumblr.com/post/78284674113/rosalarian-feminism-is-having-a-wardrobe Does the woman in the middle remind you of yourself at all?

TunipTheUnconquerable · 08/03/2014 17:13

Oh fuck off.

Goblinchild · 08/03/2014 17:15

But if the woman on the left chooses to take the bump and grind and sultry Burlesque into a paid entertainment role to use her new skill, is that OK too?
If she feels that lap dancing is like a good night out, with extra pay, would you say that was not a good choice?

Goblinchild · 08/03/2014 17:16

Is this a Third wave meets Second wave thing?
