I support Page 3, who's with me?

This might not go down well, but I cannot accept the campaign to ban Page 3. Here's why:

There is nothing wrong with the naked female body. A woman posing with her breasts on show is not lewd nor is it harmful to children.

Hypocrisy - Page 3 is no different to male models posing shirtless in women's magazines.

Prudishness - People who claim that newspapers should be banned from showing topless women are no different to the Victorians or to people in conservative parts of the world who don't allow women to show bare legs. It's the same principle.

Market mechanisms - if there is a demand for something and a consenting adult willing to supply it, then who is the government to get in the way?

Freedom of choice - if you don't like it, don't buy the Sun!

But it is absurd, irrational (and quite disgusting) to suggest that there are no factors that might increase the prevalence of sexual violence and rape within society.

Hmmmm, you know I think you might be onto something here! Maybe sexual violence is increased due to a patriarchal society which treats women as objects to serve and pleasure men whilst encouraging aggression as some sort of male ideal. Maybe we could protest against the media depiction of women as objects start to counteract this?

Though I have to say OP's description of him/herself as an "intelligent feminist" has given me a good laugh.

Hate to break this to you OP, but you come across as about as feminist as a UKIP MEP, and about as intelligent as ... well, Jedward.

Still you're giving me a cheap laugh.

Which "social fact" did you list? I thought that you were arguing that P3 helped to release "frustration" hence preventing rapists from raping.

Routergirl · 17/01/2014 21:14

WHY oh WHY are smart, reasonable people responding to this imbecile??? Just ignore...he is a total douche!

That's a very simplistic take on my point.

I said that if you suppress sexuality (male and female), you suppress sexual development. Pervert it, even. Once you do that, you increase the breeding ground the rape.

Let me ask you a question. Do you think a Western woman wearing a skirt and blouse is more likely to be groped or raped in rural Afghanistan than if she were wearing a Burkha?

^ That was me shooting myself.

Blistory · 17/01/2014 21:16

I'll bite with that post from Beth at 21:00

A Western woman ( assuming you mean white given your racist posts) MIGHT be judged because she comes from a society where woman get their tits out in national newspapers for men's pleasure so therefore, some warped thinking men, Afghanis only obviously, might consider her fair game.

You're pretty much destroying your page 3 argument.

I happen to think that your post demonstrates not only racism but rape myths. Pretty good going at persuading me you are a bigot.

So you disagree?

I have NO idea whether a western woman in western clothing is more likely to be groped in Afghanistan. I expect you can provide some evidence to show me though as you obviously believe this to be true.

No, fuck off

Beth9009 · 17/01/2014 21:19

Buffy, am I absolutely not suggesting that anything is the fault in other cultures.

I am suggesting that sexual violence is more prevalent in the cultures that are more sexually conservative.

I am looking forward to your news reports etc of women in western dress being harassed in Afghanistan.

scottishmummy · 17/01/2014 21:20

No I don't support p3

Beth9009 · 17/01/2014 21:20

Blistory, please don't tell me that you seriously think that you or I would be safe in rural Afghanistan if we dressed as we do in the West.

The BBC even advises its female journalists to dress modestly in Afghanistan because of they do not do so they are at an increased likelihood of being groped or assaulted. The foreign office gives similar advice. I hope to God none of you would let your daughters wonder around in places like Egypt or Afghanistan in Western dress.

But you already admitted that this is probably because the prophet Mohammed treated women as commodities - your argument, not mine - so page 3 has NOTHING at all to do with the price of bread.

They are two separate factors.

Buffy - you have posted some fabulous stuff on this thread. I am envisaging the lurkers seeing the strong feminist argument vs the racist, misogynist one. Grin
