This is something like the fourth pub chat thread - please pull up a chair at the bar. Everyone welcome. Smile

Old thread is here: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/1920422-The-Feminist-Pub-continued?

But it's pretty much full so welcome in.

Angry on your behalf Buffy. Don't you just love a bit of patronising.

Just watched the interview of Saga and Martin on youtube. Grin Aren't they lovely?

sisterbrute · 30/01/2014 23:16

I was quite interested in the dynamic between Saga and the young male detective, Rasmus - he hated being given orders by her - was that just because she is a woman, or because of the 'no frills' way that she gave orders? I'm not sure what I'm trying to say, but it was made into an issue in the programme - if it had been an older male boss and a younger male or female subordinate, the boss could have barked orders any way they wanted, and nothing would have been made of it. I don't know, maybe Rasmus was just supposed to be an arse..

DuskAndShiver · 30/01/2014 23:35

I think so - I think he was just supposed to be an arse, and one of the ways he manifested this was being unable to cope with the way Saga is. the others know she is different and Martin is even allowed to talk about it - remember when he asks whether her sister was "like her"? - the others don't mention it but they deal with it. Rasmus can't, because he can't see out of his me-me-me thing and it is because he is an arse, a particularly male kind of arse

UptoapointLordCopper · 31/01/2014 07:32

Rasmus: "because he is an arse, a particularly male kind of arse". Yes. Grin

I do tell my kids that manners is what you expect of yourself, not of others, and you simply do not go around telling people to say please and thank you to you, like Rasmus did, because you'll look an arse.

Sorry buffy, can't help with big files. All my work in the past 20 years would fit on a floppy (remember them?) Only thing I have to keep are plain text files.

DuskAndShiver · 31/01/2014 09:28

Happy imbolc. Happy st Brighid's day and HAPPY NEW YEAR - wishing you all a wonderful year of the horse!

Penguin, you are expecting, yes? Your baby will be "energetic, bright, warm-hearted, intelligent and able." Oh yes. Because it is all true and infallible!

Buffy, sorry I have no idea how to split up mp3s.

DuskAndShiver · 31/01/2014 09:35

oh yes Lord Copper I used to love floppies. when I was doing my MA part time, I would often work on that when I should have been doing work-work by writing directly onto floppies. I have boxes and boxes of them and I carried them around like diaries or talismans. I bought a PC in 2005 and had to ask them to put a floppy drive in as it didn't come as standard. Now I am not sure if you can get them at all!

DuskAndShiver · 31/01/2014 09:36

Buffy, is there confidentiality stuff that means you can't just wetransfer the whole thing?

My Chinese almanac says today is a good day to clean your house and go see the doctor Hmm and a bad day to go travelling or to perform religious rituals. However, if you do insist, the directions are: South for the god of happiness and wealth, east for the god of status, and north west for the god of good omens. Good hours are 2-6am, and just don't even do anything from 2 to 4pm.

There. Buffy pick your hours, though it doesn't say whether it is a good day to split mp3 files.

Gruh. Hullo. thank goodness it's Friday.

Just received the online newsletter from the professional body I belong to: "DEBATE: is the workplace sexist against men?
Has positive discrimination reached the point where the workplace is sexist... against men?"

Errr... no. Click through to website where this is debated by 2 men. Well done chaps. I have commented on it, as you can imagine. The only other comment was another woman asking where to send the world's tiniest violin Grin.

Penguins Shock at cheeky Waitrose person!

I have not seen any of these Scandi programmes - will have to download them I think. I have been watching The Following though - has anyone seen it? It's good old mindless entertainment.

And hilarious - the "bad girl" Emma from the 1st series is easily identifiable as she has short hair and no makeup TUT TUT. I think she rules and coincidentally have a similar haircut now All the other "good" women have lovely flowing locks and look beautiful. I never used to notice this stuff before I came on here!

Yeah - that bloody sexual discrimination against men. I think that every single time I watch Prime ministers question time and see all those women in the house of commons, or a summit of world leaders, or the news, or look at list of CEOs of the FTSE 100 - and I think all those women every where in their disproportionate numbers ....it's gone too far ....

UptoapointLordCopper · 31/01/2014 11:26

Positive discrimination is illegal. As good old John Stuart Mill said, we are not asking for women to be given special privileges, we are asking for special privileges for men to be withdrawn.

Hm well at risk of outing myself - it's here

I don't know if it's public or not, though!

UptoapointLordCopper · 31/01/2014 11:40

LOL buffy. It's ages since someone says that to me, but if they do they'll get "women suffer from > and you worry about opening a fucking door for somebody? Wow." And look as contemptuous as you can. Spit if you like. It's OK in those circumstances.

SauceForTheGander · 31/01/2014 11:46

! I like Barbara and Helen!

Reminds me when I interviewed a white South African who told me very angrily he was job hunting in the UK because South Africa wasn't fair to a WHAM - white, heterosexual, Afrikaans, male and that he'd been pushed out of his own country.

So he got on a plane with all his education and privilege and was able to secure a job in the city of London easily.

UptoapointLordCopper · 31/01/2014 11:53

I did laugh at Kimberley though: "... as I'm a visual person, I took a look at pictures on the Economia home page. And all of Mr Freebairn's arguments disappeared." Grin
