This is something like the fourth pub chat thread - please pull up a chair at the bar. Everyone welcome. Smile

Old thread is here: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/1920422-The-Feminist-Pub-continued?

But it's pretty much full so welcome in.

No I don't think Martin fancies Saga either. But she's the right woman for him though. Grin No nonsense about her.

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 29/01/2014 07:44

They would have an awful lot of sex!

But I think Martin likes his sex with a good dollop of emotion, so that wouldn't work.

UptoapointLordCopper · 29/01/2014 08:11

Yes, that's the problem with Martin. He is too soppy. Can't stand it. He demands emotion but cannot give commitment. LTB.

DuskAndShiver · 29/01/2014 11:39

Oh god. False dichotomy tick box questioning. ARGH

Once in a job interview (in which I was not successful, of course) I was asked if I was the sort of person to do things quickly, or properly. I had to stop myself from saying "this is a false dichotomy, of course you can do things quickly and properly sometimes, especially when the proper way to do it is primarily quickly". I also wanted to say "I know you want me to say quickly, because you are looking for someone who will manage a vast workload on a superficial level and will absorb the stress of not having time to get deeply into any issue and the resulting annoyance and frustration, without bothering anyone senior with the fallout, despite the fact that there will be errors and missed opportunities arising from structural issues around this job".

Despite not saying any of this, I did not get appointed! Go figure.

I think Martin thinks he is a hero for not shagging Pernille. I don't know why we are supposed to feel sorry for him living in a hotel and having a nice little swim after work, with a family conveniently on tap. Looks alright to me (to the extent that anything looks alright to me, shot in that awful greeny grey dusk the whole time)

I think it is interesting that Saga is presented about the one who is clueless about relationships, with Martin giving her "wtf" looks every time she talks about Jakob, for instance, yet Martin is the one who is dicking Mette about, kind of dicking Pernille about, but thinks he has it all sussed.

It's called The Bridge, Buffy. It's on its second series. You can watch the current one without having seen the previous one but if you start from here then you will be "spoiled" for the first one.

Only two more episodes left in the current series but it's probably all on iplayer.

Equal opportunity display of penises and full bushes (though infrequently, I hasten to add) - it must be ScandiDrama!

UptoapointLordCopper · 29/01/2014 12:19

Buffy - yes. The Bridge 2. Also The Bridge 1. Watch it!

There was one episode where Saga enumerated Martin's relationship failures and said that he was not well-placed to give relationship advice. Made me Grin. To his credit he did not argue.

I haven't made up my mind about Jakob. It only became obvious to me how ridiculous Saga was when I saw how close Jakob's mum was to them in the flat when she wanted sex. Grin Grin

UptoapointLordCopper · 29/01/2014 12:19

xpost.

Saga makes me Grin, but not in a bad way.

PacificDogwood · 29/01/2014 19:19

It was Saga's incomprehension when Jakob declined sex looking a bit like this Shock and Hmm and Confused and then woke up to her masturbation, while his mum is basically in the same room with them Grin!
Being not of a uptight British bent myself Wink I can cope with full bushes and full-frontal penises (?penii), but that made me splutter out my tea Grin.

I though it was implied that Martin had slept with Pernille? She certainly was upset when he told her he was going home to Mette. Mette, who is just slightly too good to be true tbh...

I also had to shout at iPlayer about the shagging-his-colleague TV editor in Borgen, the needy colleague who was the shaggee and his wife who did ultimately ask for the house keys back, but did not get as upset as I was on her behalf Blush.

PacificDogwood · 29/01/2014 19:19

OMG, smiley overuse, sorry

PacificDogwood · 29/01/2014 19:19

In my defence, 3 of those are Jakob's

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 29/01/2014 19:42

Pacific, did you see the first series?

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 29/01/2014 19:43

And no, I think the car incident was as far as it went with Pernille.

PacificDogwood · 29/01/2014 22:09

Series 1 of Borgen or The Bridge?
Yes and yes Grin

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 29/01/2014 22:18

The Bridge! I haven't seen Borgen. Just wondered because of your Mette comment.

DuskAndShiver · 29/01/2014 22:58

Pacific - you mean Torben. Yes I was very angry with Torben about that whole incident.

PacificDogwood · 29/01/2014 23:29

Yes! Torben.
I have a problem with remembering names in RL too... Blush

What did I say about Mette? 'Too good to be true'?
I just meant in the sense of her having ?5 children, no help. works, pretty, well 'groomed', always nice to Martin - even when exasperated, doesn't have a nervous breakdown when DS is poisoned by nanny-person after stepson had been killed by deranged ex-colleague of husband etc etc etc.... she should by rights require therapy and heavy-duty drugs Grin. IMO. If it were me I would, anyway.

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 30/01/2014 07:27

Yeah, true. I was thinking she wasn't 100% saint in series 1... I'm still annoyed about Martin going straight back to work after the nanny disaster without any kind of discussion about what the Jeff the kids were going to do.

Can I get cross about how it's "cavemen" AND make dinosaurs in "Dinosaurs Love Underpants"? Ok, caveman is easier to get into a rhyming/scanning scheme but "she" fits in just as well as "he"!

PacificDogwood · 30/01/2014 09:32

Did you see the actors playing Saga and Martin on BBC Breakfast and how she made sure (on national TV no less) that she got space on the sofa Grin - fab.
Also amazing how different the actress looks when she is more animated in her facial expressions and has more make-up on.
And of course they both speak excellent English, natch.

PenguinsDontEatKale · 30/01/2014 13:29

Oh dear Buffy, what happened?

Can I just do an arrrrggghhhh too? Why are pregnant women's bodies public property? I was in Waitrose café (stealth boast there, see how I redeemed myself after my lower class toddler group Pacific) and chose a salad. A woman behind me actually coughed and very politely asked if I knew that I 'wasn't meant' to eat that because it contained a particular cheese. I wish I had given her a little speech because I've actually read up on listeriosis in quite a lot of detail, but all I actually did was sort of mumble that I was aware and was happy with my food choices. So now that women just thinks I ignore health advice as opposed to the actual state of affairs - which is that I follow a lot of important advice but personally think that the listeria advice is rather flawed.

DuskAndShiver · 30/01/2014 13:33

Penguins, that is beyond fucking outrageous

Buffy - que?

CuntyBunty · 30/01/2014 13:40

Does anyone think Martin looks like Alexi Sayle and Jakob looks a bit like Kiefer Sutherland?

DuskAndShiver · 30/01/2014 13:44

OMG Alexei Sayle! I will never be able to look at Martin again without seeing Alexei Sayle!

CuntyBunty · 30/01/2014 13:52

Hope I haven't spoilt it for you Blush.
