Just read the Kat Barnyard guest blog. Liked your reply at the end of the comments to SGB op, do you think she'll reply? I didn't get all the comments about women's magazines being more harmful tbh. I'm not too keen on women's mags either but felt that this was just obscuring the main issue that of men's mags being harmful. And to answer your question no I do not think men's porn, sorry, lifestyle magazines should be sold in supermarkets.

Well yes it is.

Women's bodies are commodities just like groceries.

Selling porn along with the milk and bread, normalises that situation and ensures that we don't question it or feel shock about it.

Yes porn aka lads mags should not be available anywhere. And no, not in supermarkets

I dont get the grocery analogy, but no of course we should not ban the lads mags. They serve a sizeable section of society who want to read that type of magazine. Just as there are those who read magazines containing crosswords, celeb gossip, porn, cameras, computers and Peppa Pig! Just because you dont like books and magazines which abide by the law doesnt mean you have a right to dictate to others. Are you comfortable about banning The Satanic Verses or 40 shades as well?

I do agree with putting a cover on them though and assigning them to the top shelf. But we might as well live in a third world country if we start banning things we dont agree with.

Yes it's a bit like a racist lumbering onto a discussion by black people and demanding to be educated about all this racism business.

Just because a sizable section of the population want to do something, doesn't mean that they should be able to do it - if it did, then owning hand guns, driving while intoxicated, and marijuana would all be legal, yet society has decided that the harm they cause is greater than a person's right to be able to own/do/use these things.

Porn is harmful to children, women and by extension therefore, men. The kind of pictures and attitudes glamourised in lads mags are abhorrent - I don't want my sons thinking that that is a normal way to act towards and around women.

We'll add discussion of the evils of gossip and women's mags to the end of the agenda, the current topic is lads mags - as with anything discussion, it will be most productive if we stick to each topic in its turn rather than dancing from one to the next (thus bypassing the original topic.. something that curiously seems to always happen when we start questioning mens rights....)

Burglary isnt a great example because it directly hurts its victims. Lads mags do not. Maybe indirecty or psychologically. I dont think they are good, but I dont think they are inherintly bad either.

No, they should not be sold there, along with a lot of other trashy mags that blend sexuality with celebrity schlock more commonly bought by women, although men will spy those at the checkout as well when they have sex on the front cover.... my body after baby... celebrity beach bodies and the ilk. Men tend not buy them because they don't want to be caught buying what they regard as a woman's magazine but they have a good look while they have the chance.

Dadwashere - interesting. I dont buy the celeb magazines because they are nasty to people, and trashy. I might spy a look at certain times (eg at doctors surgery) but they generally do not interest me and I wouldnt be afraid of buying an interesting womans magazine.

I dont think they should be banned though, and I dont think lads mags should either.

Let people buy what they want to buy. And cover them up if covers are borderline pornographic. The minority shouldnt be able to dictate to the majority. In fact, as long as things are above the law, no one should be dictating to anybody!
