Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Is men pooing a feminist issue?

Just been on another thread elsewhere, where women are complaining about the amount of time their DP's take to poo in the toilet. Strangely enough, for some it always seems to happen when things are hectic with the kids Hmm.

So I think this is a feminist issue. After all, mums can't just bugger off to have a 30 or 45 minute poo leaving young children unattended outside. But some fathers routinely do this, leaving their DP's to cope alone with the kids.

I dunno.

Running away and hiding is the much more attractive option than staying put and fixing things. sounds like an excuse.

I don't think running away and hiding is so much the result of a genuine stress than it is a laziness and self indulgence. One of my BIL disappears to the toilet every time the bill arrives on the table in a restaurant. He's not stressed, he's tight.

One question I have to ask is - "why don't women just go away for 1/2 an hour?"

I honestly don't know - so tea's late, so the kids have a bath 30 minutes later, so what?

I'm honestly not sure who the fault is with here - the people (all men apparently) who don't see anything wrong with nipping off to have a poo in peace or the people (women apparently) who don't feel that they can leave the household alone for 20 minutes themselves.

I assume you all married men and not toddlers? So go out & leave them to deal with it all - no one will die (I promise!).

If your DH comes in from work and dives in the bath for an hour, put the kids in with him & take a gentle stroll!!

Are your partners putting you in this horrible position or are you?

Does no one else here find the solution to stress at the bottom of a once empty wine glass?

Just me then.

Why should tea or bath be half an hour late if women take half an hour out? Are fathers incapable of noticing that it's time to start running the kids' bath or cooking their tea?

Of course, they aren't at all, but I do think that a lot of men tend to defer responsibility, either consciously or unconsciously, for this sort of thing.

I can't presume to know what goes through anyone's head, by just refering to life-experience and studies. In the end, every single person is different - and I guess that's why openness and being able to address these issues as they arise, are so important in a relationship.

BuffytheAppleBobber

Because every single person can decide for themselves, wether or not those generalizations apply to them. After all, we're all unique. Generalizations were never meant to fit all people, only the vocal majority. I happen to be in the majority in some studies, but I'm also in the minority in others. So I fit in that one, that one, that one, and THAT one. But I don't fit in the two over there. I'm fine with that. It doesn't make me any less of a human being.

If I were to compile a short list of the central intellectual failings of rad feminism, this would be amongst them

the end, every single person is different

I would agree, so why say "men" do this and "women" do that?

There is no contradiction between the observation that everyone is different, and the observation that men are on average different to women.

Top of the list would obviously be the belief, also mentioned up thread, that our psychologies aren't influenced by natural selection.

Thanks Jo.

Anything to add to the discussion?

We know that there are differences between how women and men behave, although obviously not everyone fits into this. For example, survey after survey shows that women do more housework and childcare than men, even if they both work full time.

I think this is socialised, not natural. But it is there.

Actually my wife has always spent more time on the toilet than me (truth). I have often wondered what was happening in there but I never set up a camera because I know the root cause would have to be either my personal failure or the patriarchy in general.
