Some good points to those who denounce radfems. Totally necessary.

Fabulous article. And would have been so pertinent at the time all those fuckers were intent on destroying these boards. MN would not be what it is if it were not for those intent on heaving on the Overton Window.

The concept of the Overton Window has been revolutionary to me, and others with whom I have shared, regardless of context. It's is the very core of modern politics, whether on a micro or macro level. In some senses, it is so manipulative if used with that intent and hence it comes in very useful at work Grin. Bt, ien terms of social change, it is powerful and useful. Providing you also notice it being used against you.

That's a really, really valuable article, not just because of what it says about feminism, but what it says about other struggles, too. Moderate campaigns for all sorts of things succeed because there are people - often women - derided as "extremists" by even people who broadly agree with them, who help drag that window far along the path enough that change happens.

BasilBabyEater · 26/09/2013 11:31

Yes, every single progressive movement has been moved forward by radicals and extremists.

If we left everything to moderates and liberals, we'd still have slavery, child-labour and no maternity laws.

I think people need to remember that whenever they sneer at "extremists".

Anyone remember when Diane Abbot was considered an extremist left-wing firebrand? Her ideas are now boringly mainstream - orthodoxy in fact.
